(Nick Laham/Getty Images)</p></div> <p>In 2011, Andre Ward battered Carl Froch over 12 lopsided rounds, winning a unanimous decision and firmly establishing himself as the No. 1 super middleweight in the world. But as I watched Froch batter Mikkel Kessler last week, a fight witnessed by 18,000 fans in London&#8217;s O2 Arena and millions more on Sky Sports in the U.K and HBO in the U.S., it occurred to me:</p> <p>Ward needs Froch more than Froch needs Ward.</p> <p>Think about it: Froch has options. The win over Kessler evened the series between the two and a third fight &#8212; in either England or Denmark &#8212; would be worth millions. Light heavyweight champion Bernard Hopkins is practically pleading for a fight with Froch, willing to come to the U.K. and fight at a catchweight to get it. Rising super middleweight contender George Groves is a promotional stablemate of Froch and would create an appealing all-England showdown.</p> <p> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/06/04/does-andre-ward-need-carl-froch-believe-it-or-not-it-may-be-true/#more-5231" class="more-link">Read More&hellip;</a></p> <div id="jp-post-flair" class="sharedaddy sd-like-enabled sd-sharing-enabled"></div> <br/> </div> </div> <div class="post-bottom"> <li>Published On <span>Jun 04, 2013</span></li> <li id="right"><span><div><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/06/04/does-andre-ward-need-carl-froch-believe-it-or-not-it-may-be-true/#respond" title="Comment on Does Andre Ward need Carl Froch? (AP)</p></div> <p>LAS VEGAS &#8212; The smack talk between Paulie Malignaggi and Adrien Broner has already gone digital, with two of the most social media savvy fighters in boxing spending the last month engaged in a Twitter and Instagram street fight. But last weekend, at a press conference to promote their June 22 welterweight title fight, Broner took it to the next level. Sporting a white t-shirt with the words “Hey Paulette” emblazoned in red letters on the front, Broner stepped to a podium and declared that Malignaggi’s ex-girlfriend, Jessica, was now his “sweetheart.” He then proceeded to call Jessica, and have a conversation with her on speakerphone.</p> <p>From there it got uglier, with Broner suggesting that Malignaggi used to hit his ex, and Malignaggi &#8212; who doubles as a Showtime boxing analyst &#8212; degrading her and Broner with a variety of slurs, all in front of an audience sprinkled with women and children.</p> <p>The two will settle their differences in June in the ring, where Broner, 23, has yet to be beaten. Many have tabbed Broner (26-0) as boxing’s next big thing, a Floyd Mayweather-like talent with sharp defensive skills and blistering power in both hands. Last year, Broner moved from super featherweight (130-pounds) to lightweight (135-pounds), pounding Antonio DeMarco over eight lopsided rounds to win the WBC belt. In March, Broner defended the title, knocking out former titleholder Gavin Rees in five rounds.</p> <p>As a lightweight, Broner’s options were limited. An anticipated unification fight with Ricky Burns never materialized. And when Broner looked up to the 140-pound division &#8212; perhaps the deepest in boxing &#8212; all of the top contenders had fights already scheduled. So Broner looked to welterweight (147-pounds) and Malignaggi (32-4), the WBA titleholder, who quickly accepted the fight.</p> <p>“I was disappointed we didn’t get the Burns fight because the media and the fans wanted it,” said Broner’s trainer, Mike Stafford. “I was happy for Ricky because Ricky was smart enough to know that he couldn’t beat Adrien, and his team protected his business. Other than that, we have to move on. That’s one of the reasons we are fighting Paulie. We have not been getting the notoriety for who he was beating. People still saying we haven’t fought anybody. Paulie was the name that we felt when we beat, people will to start realize that this kid is for real. Because lot of people still think this kid is a joke.”</p> <p>Stafford says he has no concerns jumping two weight classes with Broner, who often comes to camp in the high 140’s and routinely spars with 150 and 160 pounders.</p> <p>“Adrien will be much stronger,” Stafford said. “Paulie is not a full-fledged 147-pounder, anyway. It would be different if we were fighting a 147-pounder who has been that weight for years. Paulie just got to 147. When he was an amateur, he was a little guy. His speed got him where he is today. But we have speed <em>and</em> power. Paulie is really not a full-fledged 147. Most 147-pounders walk around 160, 165, then they come down. (Rick Bowmer/AP)</p></div> <p>LAS VEGAS &#8212; Three thoughts on Floyd Mayweather’s easy win over Robert Guerrero:</p> <p><b>A blowout I thought, a blowout I got: </b>Guerrero talked tough before the fight, promising to rough up Mayweather, promising to do to him what no fighter had before. But how many times have we heard <em>that</em> before? When Guerrero did get in the ring, he found himself up against a quicker, stronger, more elusive fighter. The first two rounds were close, but after that it was repetitive. Mayweather pot-shotted Guerrero with right hands, so many in fact that he said he broke it in the middle rounds. Guerrero chased Mayweather around the ring throughout the fight, trying to pin him against the ropes, trying to do to Mayweather what he did to Andre Berto last year.</p> <p><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157/http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/mma-boxing/photos/1305/floyd-mayweather-vs-robert-guerrero-fight/"><strong>GALLERY: Action shots of Mayweather-Guerrero</strong></a></p> <p>But Mayweather (surprise!) is <em>not</em> Berto. For the most part, Mayweather kept the fight in the middle of the ring, going to the ropes, it seemed, only when he wanted to. When Guerrero did get inside, Mayweather parried most of his punches and kept a stiff guard up to prevent anything significant from getting through. According to CompuBox, Mayweather connected on 41 percent of his punches (to Guerrero’s 19 percent), 19 percent of his jabs (compared to 11 percent for Guerrero) and a whopping 60 percent of his power shots (28 percent for Guerrero). It was a boxing clinic by a fighter taking on an opponent nowhere near his level.</p> <p><b>No rust: </b>Mayweather isn’t the same springboarding defensive fighter he once was, the end result of age costing him some of his mobility. But coming off a one-year layoff and a two-month prison sentence, he was more elusive than he was in his last fight, against Miguel Cotto. Time after time Guerrero went for a big hook and came up with air. Time after time Guerrero tried to crowd Mayweather, only to have him disappear right in front of him. Going into the fight, I thought the only way Guerrero could win would be if Mayweather aged in the ring. Put simply, he didn’t.</p> <p><b>Where now, Floyd?</b> There is going to be a groundswell of support for Mayweather &#8212; who confirmed before the fight he would be back in September and that he intended to fight five more times &#8212; to face Canelo Alvarez in the fall, and Alvarez, who has replaced a defanged Manny Pacquiao as Mayweather’s preferred opponent, is a solid choice. But is there any real reason to believe that an inexperienced Alvarez will be able to locate Mayweather any better than Guerrero? Mayweather’s potential pool of opponents &#8212; Alvarez, Danny Garcia, Amir Khan &#8212; just aren’t on Mayweather’s level. It’s Floyd’s world, as long as he can keep his skills on top of it.</p> <p style="text-align:right;"><em><strong>&#8211; Chris Mannix</strong></em></p> <div id="jp-post-flair" class="sharedaddy sd-like-enabled sd-sharing-enabled"></div> <br/> </div> </div> <div class="post-bottom"> <li>Published On <span>May 05, 2013</span></li> <li id="right"><span><div><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/05/05/three-thoughts-on-floyd-mayweather-beating-robert-guerrero/#comments" title="Comment on Three thoughts on Floyd Mayweather beating Robert Guerrero"><span data-lf-article-id="5130" data-lf-site-id="308691" class="livefyre-commentcount">0</span></a></div></span></li> </div> </div> <div class="post-wrap"> <div class="post-top"></div> <div class="post" id="post-4977"> <h1><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/04/23/bryant-jennings-returns-to-ring-against-andrey-fedosov/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link to Bryant Jennings to return to ring against Andrey Fedosov">Bryant Jennings to return to ring against Andrey&nbsp;Fedosov</a></h1> <div class="category"> <a href="/web/20130615013157/http://mma-boxing.si.com/category/boxing/">Boxing</a> | <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/04/23/bryant-jennings-returns-to-ring-against-andrey-fedosov/#comment"><span class="js-kit-comments-count" exclude-sources="Twitter" include-sources="Comments" uniq="/2013/04/23/bryant-jennings-returns-to-ring-against-andrey-fedosov/"></span> Comments </a> </div> <div class="entry"> <div id="cnnSCFontButtons"> <div id="cnnSCFontLabel"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize.gif"/></div> <div id="cnnSCFontMinusBtn" onclick="setActiveStyleSheet2('default'); return false;"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_minus_d.gif" alt="Decrease font" title="Decrease font" class="cnnDecreaseFont"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_minus_l.gif" alt="Decrease font" title="Decrease font" class="cnnIncreaseFont"></div> <div id="cnnSCFontPlusBtn" onclick="setActiveStyleSheet2('LargeFont'); return false;"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_plus_d.gif" alt="Enlarge font" title="Enlarge font" class="cnnIncreaseFont"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_plus_l.gif" alt="Enlarge font" title="Enlarge font" class="cnnDecreaseFont"></div> </div> <div id="attachment_4978" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 620px"><img class="size-full wp-image-4978 " alt="bryant-jennings" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157im_/http://sicounterpunch.files.wordpress.com/2013/04/bryant-jennings.jpg?w=610&amp;h=460" width="610" height="460"/><p class="wp-caption-text">Bryant Jennings (left) is undefeated in his career and has been considered as an opponent for titleholder Wladimir Klitschko. Earlier this year, Jennings was strongly considered as an opponent for unified titleholder Wladimir Klitschko. When Mayweather defected to Showtime, Klitschko switched to Francesco Pianeta, who is better known in Europe.</p> <p>“I&#8217;m not that disappointed, well, in a way I am,” Jennings told me in an interview on NBC. “After this fight he&#8217;ll probably be tied up with mandatories and stuff like that, so that probably puts [a title shot] on hold. (AP)</p></div> <p>NEW YORK &#8212; Sporting a red sweatsuit and a toothy smile, and with a palpable confidence that seemed to radiate from him, Guillermo Rigondeaux paraded around the lobby of the Theatre at Madison Square Garden Wednesday like a man who had already won. He walked up to his promoter, Bob Arum, who also promotes Nonito Donaire, the man Rigondeaux will face Saturday night in a super bantamweight unification fight at Radio City Music Hall (HBO, 11 p.m.) and a fighter Arum has significantly more invested in and said, &#8220;You better have a Plan B.&#8221; Later, he glad-handed an HBO executive and declared, &#8220;Next time, you owe me some money.&#8221;</p> <p>Saturday night is a big opportunity for Rigondeaux (11-0), a man with a sparkling résumé &#8212; two Olympic gold medals, two World Championship titles and a full-fledged world champion in just his ninth pro fight &#8212; but perhaps more anonymity than any top fighter in the sport. A language barrier &#8212; Rigondeaux speaks Spanish &#8212; a dull style and the fact that most of his greatest achievements came while fighting for Cuba contributes to that.</p> <p>&#8220;Obviously,&#8221; Rigondeaux said, &#8220;the public does not respect me because of the number of [professional] fights I have had.&#8221;</p> <p>Beating Donaire &#8212; SI.com&#8217;s <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157/http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/mma/news/20121228/nonito-donaire-is-the-fighter-of-the-year/" target="_blank">2012 Fighter of the Year</a> and one of the top pound for pound fighters in boxing &#8212; would go a long way towards gaining that respect. Donaire is Top Rank&#8217;s Golden Boy, an HBO staple with a bright &#8212; and lucrative &#8212; future.</p> <p>For Rigondeaux, a win would put him in the same conversation Donaire is in.</p> <p>&#8220;The amateur accomplishments that I have had, I want to repeat on a professional level,&#8221; Rigondeaux said. &#8220;Beating Nonito would be beating the best in the division. I have great respect for Nonito and I think he is a great fighter. Beating him would be a great accomplishment in itself. He can stop talking about me as an amateur.&#8221;</p> <p>&#8220;It would be a huge accomplishment to add to my amateur accomplishments. A victory over Nonito would show the world that I can compete against the best in the world in a professional capacity.&#8221;</p> <p>Donaire has a reputation as an action fighter, willing to absorb some punches to get his opponent to engage. That philosophy has significantly increased Donaire&#8217;s popularity. Despite some questioning his chin &#8212; Rigondeaux has been knocked down and wobbled in recent fights &#8212; Rigondeaux says he intends to stand in with Donaire on Saturday.</p> <p>&#8220;In this fight I will try to engage more than I have in the past,&#8221; Rigondeaux said. &#8220;I want to give the fans what they want to see. Nonito is an aggressive boxer and I will be coming for him. I expect the same from Nonito. He is a great boxer and a great technician. I think there are going to be a lot of fireworks.&#8221;</p> <p style="text-align:right;"><b><i>&#8211; Chris Mannix</i></b></p> <div id="jp-post-flair" class="sharedaddy sd-like-enabled sd-sharing-enabled"></div> <br/> </div> </div> <div class="post-bottom"> <li>Published On <span>Apr 11, 2013</span></li> <li id="right"><span><div><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/04/11/nonito-donaire-vs-guillermo-rigondeaux/#comments" title="Comment on Nonito Donaire fight is Guillermo Rigondeaux’s chance to break through"><span data-lf-article-id="4950" data-lf-site-id="308691" class="livefyre-commentcount">0</span></a></div></span></li> </div> </div> <div class="post-wrap"> <div class="post-top"></div> <div class="post" id="post-4775"> <h1><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/03/22/ross-greenburg-floyd-mayweather-showtime/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link to Ex-HBO exec. (Jemal Countess/Getty Images)</p></div> <p>If you are familiar with the boxing industry, the following sentence will sound strange: Ross Greenburg is working for Showtime.</p> <p>Greenburg, of course, was the President of HBO Sports from 2000 to 2011 &#8212; and an executive producer at the network for nearly two decades before that &#8212; before being forced out in the summer of 2011. With Showtime, Greenburg will produce a one-hour documentary that will air on CBS chronicling the last year in the life of Floyd Mayweather, including his time in prison. In addition, Greenburg will work on Showtime’s <i>All Access</i> reality show, a carbon copy of the the <i>24/7</i> series Greenburg created at HBO in 2007, that will air in the weeks leading up to Mayweather’s fight against Robert Guerrero on May 4th.</p> <p>“This has always been in my blood,” Greenburg told SI.com. “I have always been a producer at heart. I love telling stories. It’s refreshing. There are not a lot of headaches. I didn’t have to put out too many fires. I really enjoyed the people I work with.”</p> <p>Since leaving HBO, Greenburg has worked closely with NBC, producing documentaries on Earl Campbell (which was nominated for a Sports Emmy), the 1972 Summit Series between Canada and the Soviet Union, the 1952 U.S. Open and the 1991 Ryder Cup. Greenburg also worked on <i>Costas Tonight</i> on NBC Sports Network &#8212; including Mayweather’s appearance on the show last year &#8212; and consulted for the NHL, Discovery Channel and Under Armour.</p> <p>Now, Greenburg is back in boxing, working with the archrival of the network that he had a big hand in turning into a powerhouse.</p> <p>“I guess I feel like [Kevin] Youkilis and [Johnny] Damon going into the [Yankees] locker room,” Greenburg said. “I’m just interested in helping [Showtime Executive Vice President] Stephen [Espinoza] as much as I can. It’s been very easy for me. They have welcomed me like family. It’s like Jeter putting arm around Youkilis. I’m back doing what I want to do. I have to take care of my family. I’ll always remember and cherish the glorious past. I had a wonderful 33 years [at HBO].”</p> <p>It’s been comfortable for Greenburg to work with Mayweather, who he maintained a close relationship with during his time with HBO. And despite the fact that since Mayweather became a star on <i>24/7</i> in 2007 his story has been told repeatedly, Greenburg believes the events of the last year have left a rich tale to tell.</p> <p>“There is the evolving relationship between Floyd, Roger [Mayweather] and Floyd Sr.,” Greenburg said. “Floyd himself spent 62 days in solitary. It changed his whole point of view on life. We spent the last three or four days with Floyd in the gym. Floyd and Roger are both there. Floyd Sr. is very involved. It’s an interesting evolution of that relationship. Floyd and his father are very close. The time he spent in prison did change him.”</p> <p>Greenburg wouldn’t say if his relationship with Showtime could last beyond this fight (“We’ll see,” Greenburg said) but said he had no regrets about his time at HBO.</p> <p>“No, not at all,” Greenburg said. “I did my job. The HBO sports department is something I will always remember. I think we built a hell of a franchise and a brand. The boxing program when I left it was as strong as it ever was. I have no regrets whatsoever. I took a lot of criticism, most of it unwarranted, but that is OK. I’m a big boy. I’ll pick myself back up. I have so many great memories. All fond memories.”</p> <p>Well, almost all. Greenburg admits he still wishes he could have made the mega fight between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao.</p> <p>“It’s funny, there weren’t that many times that I couldn’t make a fight,” Greenburg said. “I tried twice and got very close. To this day, I’m not going to put the blame on anyone because I couldn’t figure out why it didn’t happen. But I think boxing can recover. It didn’t happen, and it was not meant to be. It’s unfortunate because it probably would have been an epic buildup, even though I’m not sure it would have been a good fight. I know Floyd has moved on. He continues to be asked about Pacquiao and his attitude is much like mine, that if it was meant to be, fine. All recommendations by the panel are just that &#8212; recommendations &#8212; and require adoption by the full Nevada State Athletic Commission.</p> <p style="text-align:right;"><em><strong>&#8211; Melissa Segura</strong></em></p> <div id="jp-post-flair" class="sharedaddy sd-like-enabled sd-sharing-enabled"></div> <br/> </div> </div> <div class="post-bottom"> <li>Published On <span>Mar 21, 2013</span></li> <li id="right"><span><div><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/03/21/commission-to-reevaluate-nevadas-drug-testing-policy/#respond" title="Comment on Commission to reevaluate Nevada’s drug testing policy for fighters"><span data-lf-article-id="4766" data-lf-site-id="308691" class="livefyre-commentcount">0</span></a></div></span></li> </div> </div> <div class="post-wrap"> <div class="post-top"></div> <div class="post" id="post-4701"> <h1><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/03/17/timothy-bradley-takes-out-ruslan-provodnikov-in-tremendous-welterweight-fight/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link to Timothy Bradley takes out Ruslan Provodnikov in welterweight fight">Timothy Bradley takes out Ruslan Provodnikov in welterweight&nbsp;fight</a></h1> <div class="category"> <a href="/web/20130615013157/http://mma-boxing.si.com/category/boxing/">Boxing</a> | <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/03/17/timothy-bradley-takes-out-ruslan-provodnikov-in-tremendous-welterweight-fight/#comment"><span class="js-kit-comments-count" exclude-sources="Twitter" include-sources="Comments" uniq="/2013/03/17/timothy-bradley-takes-out-ruslan-provodnikov-in-tremendous-welterweight-fight/"></span> Comments </a> </div> <div class="entry"> <div id="cnnSCFontButtons"> <div id="cnnSCFontLabel"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize.gif"/></div> <div id="cnnSCFontMinusBtn" onclick="setActiveStyleSheet2('default'); return false;"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_minus_d.gif" alt="Decrease font" title="Decrease font" class="cnnDecreaseFont"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_minus_l.gif" alt="Decrease font" title="Decrease font" class="cnnIncreaseFont"></div> <div id="cnnSCFontPlusBtn" onclick="setActiveStyleSheet2('LargeFont'); return false;"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_plus_d.gif" alt="Enlarge font" title="Enlarge font" class="cnnIncreaseFont"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_plus_l.gif" alt="Enlarge font" title="Enlarge font" class="cnnDecreaseFont"></div> </div> <div id="attachment_4702" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 610px"><img class="size-full wp-image-4702" alt="Timothy Bradley improved his record to 30-0 with a 12-round unanimous decision over Ruslan Provodnikov. (Jae C. Hong/AP)</p></div> <p>Three thoughts on Timothy Bradley’s wildly entertaining win over Ruslan Provodnikov:</p> <p><b>Who saw this coming?</b></p> <p>Bradley, the defending champion who has spent his career competing against top competition, was a heavy favorite coming in against Provodnikov, a 140-pounder best known for being Manny Pacquiao’s sparring partner. But from the opening bell, it was clear this was no mismatch. Both Provodnikov and Bradley came out aggressive, but while Bradley landed the higher volume of punches, Provodnikov’s carried more steam behind them. Provodnikov had Bradley rocked multiple times in the first two rounds, including a shot in the first that appeared to knock Bradley down, to the point where he stumbled twice just trying to get up. Referee Pat Russell ruled it a slip, and Bradley recovered to control the action until the 12th round, when an aggressive Provodnikov swarmed him with power punches and put him down with less than 20 seconds to go. The final scores (114-113, twice, and 115-12) were right, given that judges are handcuffed by what the referee calls. But if Russell had ruled a first-round knockdown, the fight would have been scored a draw.</p> <p> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/03/17/timothy-bradley-takes-out-ruslan-provodnikov-in-tremendous-welterweight-fight/#more-4701" class="more-link">Read More&hellip;</a></p> <div id="jp-post-flair" class="sharedaddy sd-like-enabled sd-sharing-enabled"></div> <br/> </div> </div> <div class="post-bottom"> <li>Published On <span>Mar 17, 2013</span></li> <li id="right"><span><div><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/03/17/timothy-bradley-takes-out-ruslan-provodnikov-in-tremendous-welterweight-fight/#comments" title="Comment on Timothy Bradley takes out Ruslan Provodnikov in welterweight fight"><span data-lf-article-id="4701" data-lf-site-id="308691" class="livefyre-commentcount">0</span></a></div></span></li> </div> </div> <div class="post-wrap"> <div class="post-top"></div> <div class="post" id="post-4576"> <h1><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/03/06/keith-thurman-jan-zaveck-hbo/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link to In prime time, Keith Thurman hopes knockouts beget respect">In prime time, Keith Thurman hopes knockouts beget&nbsp;respect</a></h1> <div class="category"> <a href="/web/20130615013157/http://mma-boxing.si.com/category/boxing/">Boxing</a> | <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/03/06/keith-thurman-jan-zaveck-hbo/#comment"><span class="js-kit-comments-count" exclude-sources="Twitter" include-sources="Comments" uniq="/2013/03/06/keith-thurman-jan-zaveck-hbo/"></span> Comments </a> </div> <div class="entry"> <div id="cnnSCFontButtons"> <div id="cnnSCFontLabel"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize.gif"/></div> <div id="cnnSCFontMinusBtn" onclick="setActiveStyleSheet2('default'); return false;"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_minus_d.gif" alt="Decrease font" title="Decrease font" class="cnnDecreaseFont"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_minus_l.gif" alt="Decrease font" title="Decrease font" class="cnnIncreaseFont"></div> <div id="cnnSCFontPlusBtn" onclick="setActiveStyleSheet2('LargeFont'); return false;"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_plus_d.gif" alt="Enlarge font" title="Enlarge font" class="cnnIncreaseFont"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_plus_l.gif" alt="Enlarge font" title="Enlarge font" class="cnnDecreaseFont"></div> </div> <div id="attachment_4578" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 620px"><img class="size-full wp-image-4578" alt="AP Photo/Jae C. (Jae C. Hong/AP)</p></div> <p>NEW YORK &#8212; Over the last year, Keith Thurman has become a poster boy for what’s wrong with boxing. Here was a young, unknown, inexperienced prospect with no resumé to speak of being gift wrapped prime HBO slots. Why? Because his manager is Al Haymon, the shadowy power broker who networks bend over backwards to appease. When Thurman was added to a show, promoters and managers howled at the unfairness of it.</p> <p>On Saturday, Thurman (19-0) is back on the network, matched up with Jan Zaveck (32-2) on the undercard of Tavoris Cloud’s light heavyweight title defense against Bernard Hopkins at the Barclays Center (9:30 ET, HBO). It will be his third straight fight on HBO and while Thurman says he understands the criticism of him, he believes his performances&#8211;back-to-back knockouts&#8211;should be weighed into opinions.</p> <p>“To a certain extent [the criticism] is fair because people didn’t know much about me,” Thurman told SI.com. “But I’m a rare fighter. I’m 19-0 with 18 knockouts. The reason I’m on HBO is because I have knockout potential. I’m here to give everybody a great, tremendous fight. I’m always trying to dismantle my opponent. That deserves respect.”</p> <p>“My plan is to gather as many fans with every fight, to get more respect with every fight and more recognition. Pretty soon, we’re going to turn some of the critics. I believe I do belong here.”</p> <p> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/03/06/keith-thurman-jan-zaveck-hbo/#more-4576" class="more-link">Read More&hellip;</a></p> <div id="jp-post-flair" class="sharedaddy sd-like-enabled sd-sharing-enabled"></div> <br/> </div> </div> <div class="post-bottom"> <li>Published On <span>Mar 06, 2013</span></li> <li id="right"><span><div><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/03/06/keith-thurman-jan-zaveck-hbo/#respond" title="Comment on In prime time, Keith Thurman hopes knockouts beget respect"><span data-lf-article-id="4576" data-lf-site-id="308691" class="livefyre-commentcount">0</span></a></div></span></li> </div> </div> <div class="post-wrap"> <div class="post-top"></div> <div class="post" id="post-4536"> <h1><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/02/19/floyd-mayweather-jr-s-next-opponent-announced-robert-guerrero/" rel="bookmark" title="Permanent Link to Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s next opponent announced: Robert Guerrero">Floyd Mayweather Jr.&#8217;s next opponent announced: Robert&nbsp;Guerrero</a></h1> <div class="category"> <a href="/web/20130615013157/http://mma-boxing.si.com/category/boxing/">Boxing</a> | <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157/http://mma-boxing.si.com/2013/02/19/floyd-mayweather-jr-s-next-opponent-announced-robert-guerrero/#comment"><span class="js-kit-comments-count" exclude-sources="Twitter" include-sources="Comments" uniq="/2013/02/19/floyd-mayweather-jr-s-next-opponent-announced-robert-guerrero/"></span> Comments </a> </div> <div class="entry"> <div id="cnnSCFontButtons"> <div id="cnnSCFontLabel"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize.gif"/></div> <div id="cnnSCFontMinusBtn" onclick="setActiveStyleSheet2('default'); return false;"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_minus_d.gif" alt="Decrease font" title="Decrease font" class="cnnDecreaseFont"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_minus_l.gif" alt="Decrease font" title="Decrease font" class="cnnIncreaseFont"></div> <div id="cnnSCFontPlusBtn" onclick="setActiveStyleSheet2('LargeFont'); return false;"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_plus_d.gif" alt="Enlarge font" title="Enlarge font" class="cnnIncreaseFont"><img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157im_/http://i.cdn.turner.com/si/.element/img/4.0/story/textsize_plus_l.gif" alt="Enlarge font" title="Enlarge font" class="cnnDecreaseFont"></div> </div> <div id="attachment_4538" class="wp-caption aligncenter" style="width: 620px"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20130615013157/http://sicounterpunch.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/dan-guerrero.jpg"><img class="size-full wp-image-4538 " alt="Robert Guerrero (right) last fought in Nov. 2012, when he defeated Andre Berto.
