Data for retrospective studies (2016 - 2020) was collected from both government and private veterinary clinics in Aba. A total of 66 dog bite cases were reported between January 2016 and December 2020 with a majority of victims being adults (51.5%) within the ages of 18 – 50 years. On the prevalence of dog bite cases according to the gender of victims, males (75.8%) were mostly involved compared to female victims (24.2%). Anatomically, the majority of bite wounds (65.2%) were on the legs. The monthly distribution of bites indicates a higher frequency in the months of January and March (dry season). Local 28 (43.8%) and exotic breeds 30(46.8%) of dogs were mostly involved in the dog bite cases. The majority of the dogs (92.2%) involved in the bite cases were known dogs whose owners could be contacted, while a very few proportion (7.8%) were stray dogs. Results of this study indicated that only 16 (25%) of the offending dogs had a current antirabies vaccination record, 8 (12.5%) had an unknown vaccination record, while the largest proportion, 40 (62.5%) of the offending dogs had no current vaccination record. Public awareness of the danger of dog bites in relation to rabies and increased antirabies vaccination of dogs as a means of controlling the disease is recommended. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Aba" title="Aba">Aba</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dog%20bite" title=" dog bite"> dog bite</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=rabies" title=" rabies"> rabies</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=vaccination%20profile" title=" vaccination profile"> vaccination profile</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/177745/a-retrospective-study-of-dog-bite-occurrence-and-anti-rabies-vaccination-of-dogs-in-veterinary-clinics-in-aba-abia-state-nigeria-from-january-2016-to-december-2020" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/177745.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">81</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">87</span> Child Marriage and the Law in Nigeria</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kolawole-Amao">Kolawole-Amao</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Grace%20Titilayo"> Grace Titilayo </a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Children are the most vulnerable members of the society. The child is a foundation of the society and he/she assures its continuity. Thus, the survival, continuity and the standard of development of human society depends upon the protection, preservation, nurture and development of the child. In other words, the rights of a child must be protected and guaranteed for the assurance of a healthy society. The law is an instrument of social change in any society as well as a potent weapon to combat crime, achieve justice for the people and protect their rights. In Nigeria, child marriage still occurs, though its prevalence varies from one region to another. This paper shall Centre on child rights under the law in Nigeria, child marriage and its impact on the child, obstacles in eliminating child marriages and measures that have been adopted as well as the role of the law and its effect in deterring child marriage in Nigeria. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=child%20rights" title="child rights">child rights</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=child%20marriage" title=" child marriage"> child marriage</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=law" title=" law"> law</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nigeria" title=" Nigeria"> Nigeria</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/37939/child-marriage-and-the-law-in-nigeria" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/37939.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">495</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">86</span> Development of a Spatial Data for Renal Registry in Nigeria Health Sector</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Adekunle%20Kolawole%20Ojo">Adekunle Kolawole Ojo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Idowu%20Peter%20Adebayo"> Idowu Peter Adebayo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Egwuche%20Sylvester%20O."> Egwuche Sylvester O.</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality across developed and developing nations and is associated with increased risk. A total of 200 valid responses from a survey conducted in 10 hotels in Lagos Nigeria were received. Data were analyzed using frequency distribution and percentage analysis. Findings suggest that leadership, work environment, as well as tenure and level in the organization are reliable predictors of employees empowerment in Nigeria's hotel sector. The study concluded that organizations need to learn that an empowered employee will put in superior performance which would positively impact on the organization. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=employee%20empowerment" title="employee empowerment">employee empowerment</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hospitality%20industry" title=" hospitality industry"> hospitality industry</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=individual-level%20antecedents" title=" individual-level antecedents"> individual-level antecedents</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=leadership" title=" leadership"> leadership</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=organizational%20antecedents" title=" organizational antecedents"> organizational antecedents</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/43522/impact-of-organizational-and-individual-antecedents-on-employees-empowerment-in-nigerias-hospitality" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/43522.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">505</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">84</span> Use of Self-Monitoring Strategy on Homework Completion among Pupils with Learning Disabilities in Ondo State, Nigeria</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Olusegun%20Omoluwa">Olusegun Omoluwa</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kolawole%20Israel%20Anthony"> Kolawole Israel Anthony</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Pupils with learning disabilities are found in every classroom, but because learning disabilities cannot be seen, the condition is often too neglected. Unless these pupils are recognised and treated, they are likely to become educational discards. This study consequently attempted to determine effects of self-monitoring strategy on homework completion among pupils with learning disabilities. Ninety (90) participants were engaged in the study. Pre-test, post-test, control group quasi experimental design was adopted. Purposive sampling technique was used to select pupils with evidence of learning disabilities from three primary schools in Ondo State. Findings showed that self-monitoring strategy was significant in enhancing homework completion among pupils with learning disabilities. However, gender and self-esteem did not significantly contribute to homework completion. The study therefore recommended that measures such that would uncover unsettling academic, psychological and emotional deficiencies of these pupils through appropriate diagnosis should be undertaken by the parents and teachers, in order for them to have a sense of belonging in the society. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=self%20monitoring" title="self monitoring">self monitoring</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=home%20work%20completion" title=" home work completion"> home work completion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=learning%20dissabilities" title=" learning dissabilities"> learning dissabilities</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=learning" title=" learning"> learning</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/70656/use-of-self-monitoring-strategy-on-homework-completion-among-pupils-with-learning-disabilities-in-ondo-state-nigeria" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/70656.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">352</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">83</span> Social Media Utilisation and Addiction among Students in Nigerian Universities</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kolawole%20Akinjide%20Aramide">Kolawole Akinjide Aramide</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Razaq%20Oyewo"> Razaq Oyewo</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This study investigates social media utilisation and addiction among students in Nigerian universities. The study revealed regular use of social media for the purpose of communicating and connecting with friends only while Picassa, Twitter, Flickr, Youtube, MySpace, Blogger, Linkedln and LibraryThing were found to top the list of social media being used on regular basis by the students. The level of social media addiction among the students was found to be low. A significant difference was established between undergraduate and postgraduate students’ utilization of social media as the undergraduate students were found to utilise social media more than the postgraduate students. Today, prepaid no longer constitutes the low-revenue, basic-service segment. It is driven by a high margin, value-add service customers who view it as a convenient way of retaining control over their usage and communication spending while expecting high service levels. To service providers, prepaid services offer the advantage of reducing bad accounts while allowing them to predict usage and plan network resources. Yet, the real-time demands of prepaid services require a scalable, real-time platform to manage customers through their entire life cycle. It delivers integrated real-time rating, voucher management, recharge management, customer care and service provisioning for the generation of new prepaid services. It carries high scalability that can handle millions of prepaid customers in real-time through their entire life cycle. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=prepaid%20billing" title="prepaid billing">prepaid billing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=voucher%20management" title=" voucher management"> voucher management</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=customers" title=" customers"> customers</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=automated" title=" automated"> automated</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=security" title=" security"> security</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/153421/automated-prepaid-billing-subscription-system" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/153421.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">115</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">80</span> Corruption and the Entrenchment of the Rule of Law in Nigeria</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Grace%20Titilayo">Grace Titilayo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kolawole-Amao"> Kolawole-Amao</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Influence and authority of law within society should be respected by all and sundry regardless of individual status. Rule of law implies that every citizen is subject to the law. In a society governed by the rule of law, government and its officials and agents are also held subject to and accountable under the law. Law should not be employed to suit individual tenets. Where the rule of law operates, the government is the government of law and not of men. Corruption is a factor that kills the growth of the rule of law. Where corruption flourishes, the rule of law fails, simply put, corruption is a threat to the rule of law. It bastardized and undermines the rule of law and good governance principles - where men rule at their discretion rather than the use of the rule of law which makes governance processes ineffective. Corruption is prevalent all over the world, and has extremely far reaching effects. Many of the world’s greatest challenges have been amplified by corruption, for example poverty, unequal distribution of wealth and resources, and world hunger and it weakens the application and the entrenchment of the rule of law. It saps citizens' trust in their governments and undercuts government credibility. This paper will discuss the rule of law in the present democratic system in Nigeria, the impact of corruption on the rule of law in Nigeria and how corruption undermines and subverts the entrenchment of the rule of law in the present day Nigeria. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=rule%20of%20law" title="rule of law">rule of law</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=corruption" title=" corruption"> corruption</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nigeria" title=" Nigeria"> Nigeria</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=influence" title=" influence"> influence</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=authority" title=" authority "> authority </a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/33036/corruption-and-the-entrenchment-of-the-rule-of-law-in-nigeria" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/33036.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">557</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">79</span> The Impact of Digitalization and Sustainability on Professionals’ Performance in the Built Environment in Nigeria</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Taiwo">Taiwo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Richard%20Oluseyi"> Richard Oluseyi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Morakinyo"> Morakinyo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kolawole%20O."> Kolawole O.</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Oyeniran"> Oyeniran</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Demilade%20O."> Demilade O.</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This study examines the effects of digitalization and sustainability on professionals' performance within the built environment. Torture and other ill -treatments is banned at all times in all places including in times of war. There is no justification for torture, cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment under any law in Nigeria. All statutes; local, regional and international on human rights prohibits all forms of degrading treatment. This paper examines the definition of torture, inhuman and degrading treatment and the prevalence of confessional statements obtain through torture by security agencies during the interrogation of crime suspects and are mostly relied upon during trial even in cases involving capital punishment. The paper further reviews the Violence against Persons Prohibition Act 2015 which prohibits torture and other forms of ill-treatment. Presently, the Act is applicable only to the federal Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. Consequently, the paper concludes that the Act should be adopted as a matter of urgency by the 36 states of the Federation of Nigeria and in addition, cogent steps must be taken to ensure that the provisions of the Act are strictly complied with in order to eliminate torture, cruel and inhuman degrading treatment in Nigeria. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=confessional%20statement" title="confessional statement">confessional statement</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=human%20rights" title=" human rights"> human rights</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=torture" title=" torture"> torture</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=United%20Nations" title=" United Nations"> United Nations</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/56639/torture-inhuman-and-degrading-treatment-in-nigeria-a-time-for-legislative-intervention" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/56639.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">304</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">77</span> The Burmese Exodus of 1942: Towards Evolving Policy Protocols for a Refugee Archive</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Vinod%20Balakrishnan">Vinod Balakrishnan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chrisalice%20Ela%20Joseph"> Chrisalice Ela Joseph</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The Burmese Exodus of 1942, which left more than 4 lakh as refugees and thousands dead, is one of the worst forced migrations in recorded history. Adding to the woes of the refugees is the lack of credible documentation of their lived experiences, trauma, and stories and their erasure from recorded history. Media reports, national records, and mainstream narratives that have registered the exodus provide sanitized versions which have reduced the refugees to a nameless, faceless mass of travelers and obliterated their lived experiences, trauma, and sufferings. This attitudinal problem compels the need to stem the insensitivity that accompanies institutional memory by making a case for a more humanistically evolved policy that puts in place protocols for the way the humanities would voice the concern for the refugee. A definite step in this direction and a far more relevant project in our times is the need to build a comprehensive refugee archive that can be a repository of the refugee experiences and perspectives. The paper draws on Hannah Arendt’s position on the Jewish refugee crisis, Agamben’s work on statelessness and citizenship, Foucault’s notion of governmentality and biopolitics, Edward Said’s concepts on Exile, Fanon’s work on the dispossessed, Derrida’s work on ‘the foreigner and hospitality’ in order to conceptualize the refugee condition which will form the theoretical framework for the paper. It also refers to the existing scholarship in the field of refugee studies such as Roger Zetter’s work on the ‘refugee label’, Philip Marfleet’s work on ‘refugees and history’, Lisa Malkki’s research on the anthropological discourse of the refugee and refugee studies. The paper is also informed by the work that has been done by the international organizations to address the refugee crisis. The emphasis is on building a strong argument for the establishment of the refugee archive that finds but a passing and a none too convincing reference in refugee studies in order to enable a multi-dimensional understanding of the refugee crisis. Some of the old questions cannot be dismissed as outdated as the continuing travails of the refugees in different parts of the world only remind us that they are still, largely, unanswered. The questions are -What is the nature of a Refugee Archive? How is it different from the existing historical and political archives? What are the implications of the refugee archive? What is its contribution to refugee studies? The paper draws on Diana Taylor’s concept of the archive and the repertoire to theorize the refugee archive as a repository that has the documentary function of the ‘archive’ and the ‘agency’ function of the repertoire. It then reads Ayya’s Accounts- a memoir by Anand Pandian -in the light of Hannah Arendt’s concepts of the ‘refugee as vanguard’ and ‘story telling as political action’- to illustrate how the memoir contributes to the refugee archive that provides the refugee a place and agency in history. The paper argues for a refugee archive that has implications for the formulation of inclusive refugee policies. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ayya%E2%80%99s%20Accounts" title="Ayya’s Accounts">Ayya’s Accounts</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Burmese%20Exodus" title=" Burmese Exodus"> Burmese Exodus</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=policy%20protocol" title=" policy protocol"> policy protocol</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=refugee%20archive" title=" refugee archive"> refugee archive</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/113682/the-burmese-exodus-of-1942-towards-evolving-policy-protocols-for-a-refugee-archive" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/113682.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">140</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">76</span> Application of a Hybrid QFD-FEA Methodology for Nigerian Garment Designs</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Adepeju%20A.%20Opaleye">Adepeju A. To improve patronage of made- in-Nigeria designs, the first step is to understand what the consumer expects, then proffer ways to meet this expectation through product redesign or improvement of the garment production process. The purpose of this study is to investigate drivers of consumers’ value for typical Nigerian garment design (NGD). An integrated quality function deployment (QFD) and functional, expressive and aesthetic (FEA) Consumer Needs methodology helps to minimize incorrect understanding of potential consumer’s requirements in mass customized garments. Six themes emerged as drivers of consumer’s satisfaction: (1) Style variety (2) Dimensions (3) Finishing (4) Fabric quality (5) Garment Durability and (6) Aesthetics. Existing designs found to lead foreign designs in terms of its acceptance for informal events, style variety and fit. The latter may be linked to its mode of acquisition. A conceptual model of NGD acceptance in the context of consumer’s inherent characteristics, social and the business environment is proposed. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Perceived%20quality" title="Perceived quality">Perceived quality</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Garment%20design" title=" Garment design"> Garment design</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Quality%20function%20deployment" title=" Quality function deployment"> Quality function deployment</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=FEA%20Model" title=" FEA Model "> FEA Model </a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mass%20customisation" title=" Mass customisation"> Mass customisation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/123482/application-of-a-hybrid-qfd-fea-methodology-for-nigerian-garment-designs" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/123482.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">137</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">75</span> Effect of Recruitment and Selection on Employee Performance in Hospitality Industries</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yusuf%20A.%20Bako">Yusuf A. The success of any organization in this modern business environment depends on the caliber of the manpower that steer the affairs of the organization. History has shown that recruitment and selection as a function of human resources management practices have a pivotal role in determining the level of employee performance in an organization. The hospitality industries have been faced with challenges of performance due to unconventional selection and placement practices in terms of poor policy in selecting candidate, inconsistency in selection process, sidetracking employment test and interview, godfatherism and regional selection process etc. The overall objective of the study was to determine how recruitment and selection affect employee performance in hospitality industry in Ogun State, Nigeria. This study adopts descriptive and inferential research design while population was drawn from leading hotels in Ogun State, Nigeria. The samples size was 100 employees and questionnaire was used to collect data while Cronbach alpha was used to test the instrument. The result of the study reveals that correlation between employee performance and recruitment and selection were highly significant. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=employee%20performance" title="employee performance">employee performance</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=human%20resources%20management" title=" human resources management"> human resources management</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=practices" title=" practices"> practices</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=recruitment" title=" recruitment"> recruitment</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=selection" title=" selection"> selection</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/43616/effect-of-recruitment-and-selection-on-employee-performance-in-hospitality-industries" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/43616.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">379</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">74</span> How Western Donors Allocate Official Development Assistance: New Evidence From a Natural Language Processing Approach</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Daniel%20Benson">Daniel Benson</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Yundan%20Gong"> Yundan Gong</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hannah%20Kirk"> Hannah Kirk</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Advancement in national language processing techniques has led to increased data processing speeds, and reduced the need for cumbersome, manual data processing that is often required when processing data from multilateral organizations for specific purposes. As such, using named entity recognition (NER) modeling and the Organisation of Economically Developed Countries (OECD) Creditor Reporting System database, we present the first geotagged dataset of OECD donor Official Development Assistance (ODA) projects on a global, subnational basis. Our resulting data contains 52,086 ODA projects geocoded to subnational locations across 115 countries, worth a combined $87.9bn. This represents the first global, OECD donor ODA project database with geocoded projects. We use this new data to revisit old questions of how ‘well’ donors allocate ODA to the developing world. This understanding is imperative for policymakers seeking to improve ODA effectiveness. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=international%20aid" title="international aid">international aid</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=geocoding" title=" geocoding"> geocoding</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=subnational%20data" title=" subnational data"> subnational data</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=natural%20language%20processing" title=" natural language processing"> natural language processing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=machine%20learning" title=" machine learning"> machine learning</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/176229/how-western-donors-allocate-official-development-assistance-new-evidence-from-a-natural-language-processing-approach" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/176229.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">78</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">73</span> Physicochemical Characteristics and Evaluation of Main Volatile Compounds of Fresh and Dehydrated Mango</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Terezinha%20Santos%20Leite%20Neta">Maria Terezinha Santos Leite Neta</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=M%C3%B4nica%20Silva%20de%20Jesus"> Mônica Silva de Jesus</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hannah%20Caroline%20Santos%20Araujo"> Hannah Caroline Santos Araujo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rafael%20Donizete%20Dutra%20Sandes"> Rafael Donizete Dutra Sandes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Raquel%20Anne%20Ribeiro%20Dos%20Santos"> Raquel Anne Ribeiro Dos Santos</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Narendra%20Narain"> Narendra Narain</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Mango is one of the most consumed and appreciated fruits in the world, mainly due to its peculiar and characteristic aroma. Since the fruit is perishable, it requires conservation methods to prolong its shelf life. Mango cubes were dehydrated at 40°C, 50°C and 60°C and by lyophilization, and the effect of these processes was investigated on the physicochemical characteristics (color and texture) of the products and monitoring of the main volatile compounds for the mango aroma. Volatile compounds were extracted by the SPME technique and analyzed in GC-MS system. Drying temperature at 60°C and lyophilization showed higher efficiency in retention of main volatile compounds, being 63.93% and 60.32% of the total concentration present in the fresh pulp, respectively. The freeze-drying process also presented features closer to the fresh mango in relation to color and texture, which contributes to greater acceptability. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mango" title="mango">mango</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=freeze%20drying" title=" freeze drying"> freeze drying</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=convection%20drying" title=" convection drying"> convection drying</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=aroma" title=" aroma"> aroma</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=GC-MS" title=" GC-MS"> GC-MS</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/183064/physicochemical-characteristics-and-evaluation-of-main-volatile-compounds-of-fresh-and-dehydrated-mango" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/183064.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">64</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">72</span> Kant’s Conception of Human Dignity and the Importance of Singularity within Commonality</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francisco%20Lobo">Francisco Lobo</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Kant’s household theory of human dignity as a common feature of all rational beings is the starting point of any intellectual endeavor to unravel the implications of this normative notion. Yet, it is incomplete, as it neglects considering the importance of the singularity or uniqueness of the individual. In a first, deconstructive stage, this paper describes the Kantian account of human dignity as one among many conceptions of human dignity. It reads carefully into the original wording used by Kant in German and its English translations, as well as the works of modern commentators, to identify its shortcomings. In a second, constructive stage, it then draws on the theories of Aristotle, Alexis de Tocqueville, John Stuart Mill, and Hannah Arendt to try and enhance the Kantian conception, in the sense that these authors give major importance to the singularity of the individual. The Kantian theory can be perfected by including elements from the works of these authors, while at the same time being mindful of the dangers entailed in focusing too much on singularity. The conclusion of this paper is that the Kantian conception of human dignity can be enhanced if it acknowledges that not only morality has dignity, but also the irreplaceable human individual to the extent that she is a narrative, original creature with the potential to act morally. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=commonality" title="commonality">commonality</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=dignity" title=" dignity"> dignity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kant" title=" Kant"> Kant</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=singularity" title=" singularity"> singularity</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/98121/kants-conception-of-human-dignity-and-the-importance-of-singularity-within-commonality" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/98121.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">283</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">71</span> Microbial Load of Fecal Material of Broiler Birds Administered with Lagenaria Breviflora Extract</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Adeleye%20O.%20O.">Adeleye O. A total of 240-day-old broiler chicks were randomly assigned to six groups, with four replicates per group. The first group was the control, while the other four groups were fed water containing 300g/L and 500g/L concentrations of Lagenaria breviflora twice and thrice daily. The microbial load was determined using the plate count method. The results showed that the administration of Lagenaria breviflora in the water of broiler birds significantly improved their growth performance with an average weight gain range of 1.845g - 2.241g. Mortality rate was at 0%. The study also found that Lagenaria breviflora had a significant effect on the microbial count of the poultry droppings with colony count values from 3.5 x 10-7 - 9.9 x10-7CFU/ml, The total coliforms (Escherichia coli, and Salmonella sp.) was obtained as 1 x 10 -5CFU/ml. The reduction in microbial counts of the poultry droppings could be attributed to the antimicrobial properties of Lagenaria breviflora, which contain phytochemicals reported to possess antimicrobial activity. Therefore, the inclusion of Lagenaria breviflora in the diets of broiler poultry could be an effective strategy for improving growth performance and immune function and reducing the microbial load of poultry droppings, which can help to mitigate the risk of disease transmission to humans and other animals. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=gut%20microbes" title="gut microbes">gut microbes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=bacterial%20count" title=" bacterial count"> bacterial count</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=lagenaria%20breviflora" title=" lagenaria breviflora"> lagenaria breviflora</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=coliforms" title=" coliforms"> coliforms</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/174699/microbial-load-of-fecal-material-of-broiler-birds-administered-with-lagenaria-breviflora-extract" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/174699.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">96</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">70</span> Bio-Mimetic Foot Design for Legged Locomotion over Unstructured Terrain</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hannah%20Kolano">Hannah Kolano</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Paul%20Nadan"> Paul Nadan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jeremy%20Ryan"> Jeremy Ryan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sophia%20Nielsen"> Sophia Nielsen</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The hooves of goats and other ruminants, or the family Ruminantia, are uniquely structured to adapt to rough terrain. Their hooves possess a hard outer shell and a soft interior that allow them to both conform to uneven surfaces and hook onto prominent features. In an effort to apply this unique mechanism to a robotics context, artificial feet for a hexapedal robot have been designed based on the hooves of ruminants to improve the robot’s ability to traverse unstructured environments such as those found on a rocky planet or asteroid, as well as in earth-based environments such as rubble, caves, and mountainous regions. The feet were manufactured using a combination of 3D printing and polyurethane casting techniques and attached to a commercially available hexapedal robot. The robot was programmed with a terrain-adaptive gait and proved capable of traversing a variety of uneven surfaces and inclines. This development of more adaptable robotic feet allows legged robots to operate in a wider range of environments and expands their possible applications. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=biomimicry" title="biomimicry">biomimicry</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=legged%20locomotion" title=" legged locomotion"> legged locomotion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=robotic%20foot%20design" title=" robotic foot design"> robotic foot design</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ruminant%20feet" title=" ruminant feet"> ruminant feet</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=unstructured%20terrain%20navigation" title=" unstructured terrain navigation"> unstructured terrain navigation</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/123946/bio-mimetic-foot-design-for-legged-locomotion-over-unstructured-terrain" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/123946.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">128</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">69</span> A Comparative Analysis of the Application and Use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTS) in Selected Manufacturing Industries for Development in Nigeria</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kolawole%20Taiwo%20Olabode">Kolawole Taiwo Olabode</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This is a comparative study of ICTs adoption and use in selected manufacturing industries in for development. This study was carried out 2004 and was repeated 2013 (nine years after) using the same selected manufacturing industries to assess the level, improvement and extent ICT facilities used in these companies. The theory of modernization was explored to explain some developmental issues in this study. The same semi-structured questionnaire and IDI were used to elicit data on the subject matter. About 24.9% of the total workers (1,247) were sampled for this study using quota sampling technique. SPSS was used to analysis the quantitative data. The qualitative data was used to buttress the quantitative data. Findings indicated that Seven-Up Bottling Company and Frigoglass Glass Industry still remained Intensive ICT Users while only Niger Match Nigeria Limited still remained Non-Intensive ICT User while unfortunately, Askar Paint Nigeria Limited has gone liquidated. It is also important to discover that only the Intensive ICT users improved on relevant ICT facilities. The existing problems of ICT adoption and used in these companies remained the same in Niger Match Limited. The study concluded that for a society to be developed, management and government at all levels must do all things necessary to ensure that all existing organisations must be ICT compliance for workers and organisational performance and to enhance nation’s development in order to compete with other companies for global standard or recognition. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ICT" title="ICT">ICT</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=intensive%20ICT-users" title=" intensive ICT-users"> intensive ICT-users</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=entrepreneurial" title=" entrepreneurial"> entrepreneurial</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=manufacturing%20industries" title=" manufacturing industries"> manufacturing industries</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=industries%20and%20development" title=" industries and development"> industries and development</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/22042/a-comparative-analysis-of-the-application-and-use-of-information-and-communication-technologies-icts-in-selected-manufacturing-industries-for-development-in-nigeria" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/22042.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">302</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">68</span> Fabrication and Characterization of Dissolvable Microneedle Patches Using Different Compositions and Ratios of Hyaluronic Acid and Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dada%20Kolawole%20Segun">Dada Kolawole Segun</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Transdermal drug delivery has gained popularity as a non-invasive method for controlled drug release compared to traditional delivery routes. Dissolvable transdermal patches have emerged as a promising platform for delivering a variety of drugs due to their ease of use. The objective of this research was to create and characterize dissolvable transdermal patches using various compositions and ratios of hyaluronic acid and zinc oxide nanoparticles. A micromolding technique was utilized to fabricate the patches, which were subsequently characterized using scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and tensile strength testing. In vitro drug release studies were conducted to evaluate the drug release kinetics of the patches. The study found that the mechanical strength and dissolution properties of the patches were influenced by the hyaluronic acid and zinc oxide nanoparticle ratios used in the fabrication process. Moreover, the patches demonstrated controlled delivery of model drugs through the skin, highlighting their potential for transdermal drug delivery applications. The results suggest that dissolvable transdermal patches can be tailored to meet specific requirements for drug delivery applications using different compositions and ratios of hyaluronic acid and zinc oxide nanoparticles. This development has the potential to improve treatment outcomes and patient compliance in various therapeutic areas. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=transdermal%20drug%20delivery" title="transdermal drug delivery">transdermal drug delivery</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=characterization" title=" characterization"> characterization</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=skin%20permeation" title=" skin permeation"> skin permeation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=biodegradable%20materials" title=" biodegradable materials"> biodegradable materials</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/166832/fabrication-and-characterization-of-dissolvable-microneedle-patches-using-different-compositions-and-ratios-of-hyaluronic-acid-and-zinc-oxide-nanoparticles" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/166832.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">91</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">67</span> Re-Reading the Impossibility of Identity: Modeling Gender Pluralism in Curriculum and Instruction</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=A.%20K.%20O%E2%80%99Loughlin">A. Kevin Kumashiro reveals the phrase 'an impossibility of identity' in Troubling Education (2000), an investigation of the intersections of culture and gender and the impact of erasure for queer POC identity. This underscores the essentiality of an insider or an outsider identity and the appearance of 'contradiction' or impossibility of these identities. The contradictions between us as subject in our own stories and in the stories of others are often silenced. This silencing of complex, 'contradicting' identity has unmissable implications in the classroom; the developing student in question is done a serious disservice, from which they may never recover. There is no more important point of contact than the teacher, for willingness to encounter a developing person as they are, not as we already think they are, or 'know' them to be, or think they should be. To decide how to regard them based on our own unilateral identity and its associated exhortations and injunctions is, as Hannah Arendt writes in The Origins of Totalitarianism (1951), to sell off our ability to rise, human-like, to the challenge of investigating things as they are. A re-reading of Kumashiro’s impossibility of identity becomes possible through the investigation of pluralism. Identities become possible and un-paradoxical by the notion that contradictions are not problems that an individual is not unilateral, but plural. In this paper, we investigate how philosophies of pluralism can inform our understanding of impossibility of identity in classroom curriculum and pedagogy. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=identity" title="identity">identity</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=gender" title=" gender"> gender</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=culture" title=" culture"> culture</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pluralism" title=" pluralism"> pluralism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=education" title=" education"> education</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=philosophy%20of%20education" title=" philosophy of education"> philosophy of education</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=queer%20theory" title=" queer theory"> queer theory</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=philosophy%20of%20mind" title=" philosophy of mind"> philosophy of mind</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=adolescent%20development" title=" adolescent development"> adolescent development</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/85728/re-reading-the-impossibility-of-identity-modeling-gender-pluralism-in-curriculum-and-instruction" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/85728.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">299</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">66</span> Protecting Right to Life and Combating Terrorism through the Instrument of Law in Nigeria</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Oyekan%20Kolawole%20Jamiu">Oyekan Kolawole Jamiu</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The right to life is a moral principle based on the belief that a human being has the right to life and, in particular, should not be unjustly killed by another human being. However, the most worrisome security challenge in Nigeria which has cut short the lives of innocent Nigerians is the activities of the dreaded terrorist group known as Boko Haram (which means Western Education is a sin). Between 2004 till date, over 15000 people have been gruesomely murdered by this terrorist group. However, despite the facts that suspected terrorists are arrested and paraded almost on a daily basis, cases of terrorism in our courts in Nigeria today have not been expeditiously dealt with by the judiciary. This paper examines the concept of right to life. The right to life is an inherent right for each and every person. From his or her birth; the individual is considered a living being that must be protected. The right to life connotes also right to live and grow in a healthy environment where there is appropriate health care, qualitative education and adequate security of lives and property. The paper also examines the fight against terrorism and the duty of the government to protect right to life of every individual even in the midst of the fight against terrorism. The paper further reviews the Terrorism Act 2011(as amended) and the clogs in the wheel of prosecution of suspected terrorists. The paper concludes that since terrorism is a new security challenge, to prevent conflict of interest, only one security agency should be trained and saddled with the responsibility of prosecuting suspected terrorist, Law should be enacted to compel intelligent gathering and sharing of information among security agencies and in addition, a special court should be established to deal expeditiously with cases of terrorism in Nigeria. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=terrorism" title="terrorism">terrorism</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=intelligent%20gathering" title=" intelligent gathering"> intelligent gathering</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=right%20to%20life" title=" right to life"> right to life</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=prosecution" title=" prosecution"> prosecution</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/47729/protecting-right-to-life-and-combating-terrorism-through-the-instrument-of-law-in-nigeria" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/47729.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">349</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">65</span> Real, Ideal, or False Self- Presentation among Young Adult and Middle Adult Facebook Users</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maria%20Joan%20Grafil">Maria Joan Grafil</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hannah%20Wendam"> Hannah Wendam</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Christine%20Joyce%20%20Yu"> Christine Joyce Yu</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The use of social networking sites had been a big part of life of most people. One of the most popular among these is Facebook. Users range from young adults to late adults. While it is more popular among emerging and young adults, this social networking site gives people opportunities to express the self. Via Facebook, people have the opportunity to think about what they prefer to show others. This study identified which among the multiple facets of the self (real self, false self or ideal self) is dominantly presented by young adults and middle adults in using the social networking site Facebook. South Metro Manila was the locale of this study where 100 young adult participants (aged 18-25) were students from nearby universities and the 100 middle adult participants (aged 35-45) were working residents within the area. Participants were comprised of 53% females and 47% males. The data was gathered using a self-report questionnaire to determine which online self-presentation (real self-presentation, false self-presentation, or ideal self-presentation) of the participants has greater extent when engaging in the social networking site Facebook. Using means comparison, results showed that both young adults and middle adults engaged primarily in real self-presentation. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=false%20self" title="false self">false self</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=ideal%20self" title=" ideal self"> ideal self</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=middle%20adult" title=" middle adult"> middle adult</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=real%20self" title=" real self"> real self</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=self%20presentation" title=" self presentation"> self presentation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=young%20adult" title=" young adult"> young adult</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/54665/real-ideal-or-false-self-presentation-among-young-adult-and-middle-adult-facebook-users" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/54665.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">288</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">64</span> Mechanical Properties of Powder Metallurgy Processed Biodegradable Zn-Based Alloy for Biomedical Application</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Maruf%20Yinka%20Kolawole">Maruf Yinka Kolawole</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jacob%20Olayiwola%20Aweda"> Jacob Olayiwola Aweda</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Farasat%20Iqbal"> Farasat Iqbal</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Asif%20Ali"> Asif Ali</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sulaiman%20Abdulkareem"> Sulaiman Abdulkareem</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Zinc is a non-ferrous metal with potential application in orthopaedic implant materials. However, its poor mechanical properties were major challenge to its application. Therefore, this paper studies the mechanical properties of biodegradable Zn-based alloy for biomedical application. Pure zinc powder with varying (0, 1, 2, 3 & 6) wt% of magnesium powders were ball milled using ball-to-powder ratio (B:P) of 10:1 at 350 rpm for 4 hours. The resulting milled powders were compacted and sintered at 300 MPa and 350 °C respectively. Microstructural, phase and mechanical properties analyses were performed following American standard of testing and measurement. The results show that magnesium has influence on the mechanical properties of zinc. The compressive strength, hardness and elastic modulus of 210 ± 8.878 MPa, 76 ± 5.707 HV and 45 ± 11.616 GPa respectively as obtained in Zn-2Mg alloy were optimum and meet the minimum requirement of biodegradable metal for orthopaedics application. These results indicate an increase of 111, 93 and 93% in compressive strength, hardness and elastic modulus respectively as compared to pure zinc. The increase in mechanical properties was adduced to effectiveness of compaction pressure and intermetallic phase formation within the matrix resulting in high dislocation density for improving strength. The study concluded that, Zn-2Mg alloy with optimum mechanical properties can therefore be considered a potential candidate for orthopaedic application. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Biodegradable%20metal" title="Biodegradable metal">Biodegradable metal</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Biomedical%20application" title=" Biomedical application"> Biomedical application</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mechanical%20properties" title=" Mechanical properties"> Mechanical properties</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Powder%20Metallurgy" title=" Powder Metallurgy"> Powder Metallurgy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Zinc" title=" Zinc"> Zinc</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/115000/mechanical-properties-of-powder-metallurgy-processed-biodegradable-zn-based-alloy-for-biomedical-application" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/115000.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">142</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">63</span> Relationships between Financial, Cultural, Emotional, and General Wellbeing: A Structural Equation Modeling Study</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Michael%20Alsop">Michael Alsop</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hannah%20Heitz"> Hannah Heitz</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Prathiba%20Natesan%20Batley"> Prathiba Natesan Batley</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Marion%20Hambrick"> Marion Hambrick</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Jason%20Immekus"> Jason Immekus</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The impacts of cultural engagement on individuals’ health and well-being have been well documented. The purposes of this study were to create an instrument to measure wellbeing constructs, including cultural wellbeing, and explore the relationships between cultural wellbeing and other wellbeing constructs (e.g., emotional, social, physical, spiritual). A sample of 358 participants attending concerts performed by a civic orchestra in the southeastern United States completed a questionnaire designed to measure eight wellbeing constructs. Split-half exploratory, confirmatory factor analyses resulted in the retention of four wellbeing constructs: general, emotional, financial, and cultural. Structural equation modeling showed statistically significant relationships between cultural wellbeing and other wellbeing constructs. In addition to the indirect effect of financial wellbeing on emotional and general wellbeing through cultural wellbeing, there were also direct statistically significant relationships (i.e., moderator). This highlights the importance of removing financial barriers to cultural engagement and the relationship between cultural wellbeing on emotional and general wellbeing. Additionally, the retained cultural wellbeing items focused primarily on community features, indicating the value of community-based cultural engagement opportunities. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cultural%20wellbeing" title="cultural wellbeing">cultural wellbeing</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cultural%20engagement" title=" cultural engagement"> cultural engagement</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=factor%20analysis" title=" factor analysis"> factor analysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=structural%20equation%20modeling" title=" structural equation modeling"> structural equation modeling</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/167360/relationships-between-financial-cultural-emotional-and-general-wellbeing-a-structural-equation-modeling-study" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/167360.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">82</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">62</span> Proximate Composition, Colour and Sensory Properties of Akara egbe Prepared from Bambara Groundnut (Vigna subterranea)</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Samson%20A.%20Oyeyinka">Samson A. Hence, it could be used in making traditional snack usually produced from cowpea paste. In this study, akara egbe, a traditional snack was prepared from Bambara groundnut flour or paste. Cowpea was included as the reference sample. The proximate composition and functional properties of the flours were studies as well as the proximate composition and sensory properties of the resulting akara egbe. Protein and carbohydrate were the main components of Bambara groundnut and cowpea grains. Ash, fat and fiber contents were low. Bambara groundnut flour had higher protein content (23.71%) than cowpea (19.47%). In terms of functional properties, the oil absorption capacity (0.75 g oil/g flour) of Bambara groundnut flour was significantly (p ≤ 0.05) lower than that of the cowpea (0.92 g oil/g flour), whereas, Cowpea flour absorbed more water (1.59 g water/g flour) than Bambara groundnut flour (1.12 g/g). The packed bulk density (0.92 g/mL) of Bambara groundnut was significantly (p ≤ 0.05) higher than cowpea flour (0.82 g/mL). Akara egbe prepared from Bambara groundnut flour showed significantly (p ≤ 0.05) higher protein content (23.41%) than the sample made from Bambara groundnut paste (19.35%). Akara egbe prepared from cowpea paste had higher ratings in aroma, colour, taste, crunchiness and overall acceptability than those made from cowpea flour or Bambara groundnut paste or flour. Bambara groundnut can produce akara egbe with comparable nutritional and sensory properties to that made from cowpea. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Bambara%20groundnut" title="Bambara groundnut">Bambara groundnut</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cowpea" title=" Cowpea"> Cowpea</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Snack" title=" Snack"> Snack</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sensory%20properties" title=" Sensory properties"> Sensory properties</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/78671/proximate-composition-colour-and-sensory-properties-of-akara-egbe-prepared-from-bambara-groundnut-vigna-subterranea" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/78671.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">264</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">61</span> Arousal, Encoding, And Intrusive Memories</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hannah%20Gutmann">Hannah Gutmann</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Rick%20Richardson"> Rick Richardson</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Richard%20Bryant"> Richard Bryant</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Intrusive memories following a traumatic event are not uncommon. However, in some individuals, these memories become maladaptive and lead to prolonged stress reactions. A seminal model of PTSD explains that aberrant processing during trauma may lead to prolonged stress reactions and intrusive memories. This model explains that elevated arousal at the time of the trauma promotes data driven processing, leading to fragmented and intrusive memories. This study investigated the role of elevated arousal on the development of intrusive memories. We measured salivary markers of arousal and investigated what impact this had on data driven processing, memory fragmentation, and subsequently, the development of intrusive memories. We assessed 100 healthy participants to understand their processing style, arousal, and experience of intrusive memories. Participants were randomised to a control or experimental condition, the latter of which was designed to increase their arousal. Based on current theory, participants in the experimental condition were expected to engage in more data driven processing and experience more intrusive memories than participants in the control condition. This research aims to shed light on the mechanisms underlying the development of intrusive memories to illustrate ways in which therapeutic approaches for PTSD may be augmented for greater efficacy. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=stress" title="stress">stress</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=cortisol" title=" cortisol"> cortisol</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=SAA" title=" SAA"> SAA</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=PTSD" title=" PTSD"> PTSD</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=intrusive%20memories" title=" intrusive memories"> intrusive memories</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/139923/arousal-encoding-and-intrusive-memories" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/139923.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">197</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">60</span> Effect of Seasonal Variation on Two Introduced Columbiformes in Awba Dam Tourism Centre, University of Ibadan, Ibadan</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kolawole%20F.%20Farinloye">Kolawole F. Blood samples were obtained from superficial ulna vein of the 128 apparently healthy C. livia and C. guinea into tubes containing EDTA as anticoagulant. Thin blood smears (TBS) were prepared, stained and viewed under microscope. Values of Red Blood Cell (RBC) count, White Blood Cell (WBC) count, cholesterol (CH), Uric Acid (UA), Protein (PR), Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV), Haemoglobin Content (HB), Blood Volume (BV), Plasma Glucose (PG) and Length/Width (L/W) ratio of red blood cells were assessed. The procedure was carried out on a seasonal basis (wet and dry seasons of 2013-2014). Data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Lymphocyte count for C. livia was F3, 161 = 13.15, while for C. guinea was F3, 178 = 13.15. Heterophil, H/L ratio and Muscle score values for both species were (rs = -0.38, rs = -0.44), (rs = 0.51, rs = 0.31) (4, 3) respectively. Analyses also demonstrated a low WBC to RBC ratio (0.004: 25.3) in both species during the wet season compared to dry season, respectively. L/W varied significantly among sampling seasons i.e. wet (19.1% of BV, 12.6% of BV, 0.1% of BV) and dry (18.9% of BV, 12.7% of BV, 0.08% of BV). The level of HB in wet season (19.20±8.46108) is lower compared to dry season (19.70±8.48762). T-test also showed (wet=15.625, 0.111), (dry=12.125, 0.146) respectively, hence there is no association between species and haematological parameters. Species introduced were found to be haematologically stable. Although there were slight differences in seasonal composition, however this can be attributed to seasonal variation; suggesting little or no effect of seasons on their blood composition. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seasonal%20variation" title="seasonal variation">seasonal variation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Columbiformes" title=" Columbiformes"> Columbiformes</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Awba%20Dam%20tourism%20centre" title=" Awba Dam tourism centre"> Awba Dam tourism centre</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=University%20of%20Ibadan" title=" University of Ibadan"> University of Ibadan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Ibadan" title=" Ibadan"> Ibadan</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/71108/effect-of-seasonal-variation-on-two-introduced-columbiformes-in-awba-dam-tourism-centre-university-of-ibadan-ibadan" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/71108.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">341</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">59</span> Mediating Effect of Hopefulness on the Effect of Underdog Narratives to Subjective Well-Being among Local State University of Cavite</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Quiza%20Pearl%20Senilla">Quiza Pearl Senilla</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hannah%20Mercado"> Hannah Mercado</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Francis%20Angelo%20Erosa"> Francis Angelo Erosa</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Underdog narratives not only provides viewers with models of determination and hard work but that inducing hope may increase the likelihood that viewers will pursue their own goals in life. Although it has been proven that underdog narratives not only create a positive motivational state to the viewers but can also induce hope, little attention has been given to know if this underdog narrative affect the health outcomes or the subjective well-being of the viewers and if their hopefulness mediates on it. To address this gap, using underdog narratives as a predictor and hope as mediator, this study determined the effect of underdog narratives to the subjective well-being of the respondents, the relationship of hope and subjective well-being and last is the mediating effect of hopefulness. This study is an experimental research that uses a between subject design. Purposeful random sampling was used wherein the respondents must meet the following criteria to be part of the study. One hundred and twenty (N=120) Local State University students were assigned to different treatment conditions— underdog narrative, comedy, nature scenes—and a no exposure control group. Results show that there is a minimal difference on the subjective well-being of the respondents when exposed to different treatment condition although it is not significant. A moderate positive correlation between hope and subjective well-being also reveals in this study. And last the result also shows that there is no mediating effect of hopefulness to the subjective well-being of the subjects through exposure to underdog narrative. <p
