networked relations between people and things in the past. One recent example of this approach, termed \"social stratigraphy,\" offers an alternative to analyzing deeply buried and stratified architectural contexts by emphasizing the recursive social and physical actions of construction, which generate webs of human interaction (McAnany and Hodder, Archaeological Dialogues 16(1):1-22, 2009). In order to ensure that such descriptive metaphors align with our empirical observations, archaeologists need to account for the varied ways that social action and architectural practice intersect along multiple axes of variation (i.e., material, spatial, and temporal). By analyzing the interconnected spatial and temporal dimensions of past built environments, this paper suggests that relational concepts can offer more than heuristic functions for archaeological discourse. I offer a set of formal methods related to quantitative social network analyses as one way to operationalize, and thereby strengthen, such metaphors as applied to archaeological interpretation. These techniques are demonstrated using recent excavation data from multiple stratified architectural contexts at a minor temple center located in the Pasión region of the southern Maya lowlands to infer synchronous episodes of construction over a period of 1,600 years (850BCE-850CE). Results of this study demonstrate that issues of spatiotemporal variability can be resolved at a microscale by formally applying network concepts to archaeological analysis.","grobid_abstract_attachment_id":"37573506"},"document_type":"paper","pre_hit_view_count_baseline":0,"quality":"high","language":"en","title":"From metaphors to practice: Operationalizing network concepts for archaeological stratigraphy (J. In this article, we document this growth over time, discuss several of the important concepts that are used in the application of network approaches to archaeology, and introduce the other articles in this special issue on networks in archaeology. We argue that the suitability and contribution of network science techniques within particular archaeological research contexts can be usefully explored by scruti- nizing the past phenomena under study, how these are abstracted into concepts, and how these in turn are represented as network data. For this reason, each of the articles in this special issue is discussed in terms of the phenomena that they seek to address, the abstraction in terms of concepts that they use to study connectivity, and the representations of network data that they employ in their analyses. The approaches currently being used are diverse and interdisciplinary, which we think are evidence of a healthy exploratory stage in the application of network science in archaeology. To facilitate further innovation, application, and collaboration, we also provide a glossary of terms that are currently being used in network science and especially those in the applications to archaeological case studies.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Collar, A., Coward, F., Brughmans, T., \u0026 Mills, B. A brief discussion of graph theoretic applications in archaeology reveals how graph visualization and analysis was used since the 1960’s in a very similar way to later network analysis applications but did not seem to have influenced the more widespread adoption of network techniques over the past decade. These recent archaeological applications have been strongly influenced by two academic traditions, social network analysis and socio-physics. The most influential and promising techniques and models adopted from these traditions are critically discussed. This review reveals some general trends which are considered to be the result of two critical issues that will need to be addressed in future archaeological network analysis: (1) a general unawareness of the historicity and diversity of formal network methods both within and outside the archaeological discipline has resulted in a very limited methodological scope; (2) the adoption or development of network methods has very rarely been driven by specific archaeological research questions and is dominated by a few popular models and techniques, which has in some cases resulted in a routinized explanatory process. This review illustrates, however, the great potential of formal network methods for archaeology and argues that, if this potential is to be applied in a critical way, a broad multi-disciplinary scope is necessary and specific archaeological research contexts should dominate applications.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Brughmans, T. 2013. Through ritual events caches materially create important relationships between persons, places and objects. Caches have been recovered in the Maya area from as far back as the Middle Preclassic (c. 1000 BC), primarily in association with architecture. Although contemporary ethnographic studies of Maya peoples have shown that caches result from complex ritual events that enact important relationships linking architecture and social actors, most archaeological studies have focused only on the material remains of the objects recovered from caches, including their symbolic meanings or cosmological associations. Using contemporary assemblage theory, this study examined fifteen caches recovered from the Late Preclassic (c. 100 BC–AD 150) Maya site of Cerro Maya (formerly known as Cerros) in Belize. The objective was to use the archaeological materials to provide insights into the social affects of caches as dedicatory events. Treating caches as chains of events was key to exploring the social relationships that caches produced as the settlement transitioned from a small society to a monumental trading center. A detailed socio-historical trajectory of caching events was diachronically modeled using 1) new AMS radiocarbon dates made more precise by a Bayesian statistical analysis, which demonstrated the temporal relationships between specific caches; 2) an actor-network approach that identified the changing production networks of caching events; and 3) a virtual reality landscape analysis that helped visualize the spatial and temporal social fields of action that produced changing symbolic orders and social divisions over time. This study argues that caching events assembled social relationships and interconnected networks of action that spatially and temporally linked various elements of ancient Maya life, including small and large architectural construction, the production of local history, and the generation and maintenance of social difference. Caches both played a role in the emergence of social complexity and served as material traces of those developments. Additionally, the Bayesian modeled chronology demonstrates that highly organized social life developed rapidly in a period of roughly 100 years during the Late Preclassic period. This is in marked contrast to archaeological theories that assume complex societies emerged only gradually with small incremental changes. As a whole, this study contributes to anthropology by operationalizing theories of actor networks (Bruno Latour 2005) and social fields (Pierre Bourdieu 1992) for applications to archaeology and investigations of social complexity.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" The thesis merges different theories and models from a soft constructionist perspective. Throughout the text there is a critique of how practice theories have been dealt with archaeologically. By using arguments from time- philosophy and recent agency theories it is argued that social practice is not a suitable way to begin our approach to the archaeological data. The thesis concludes that it is by using different biographies that we can begin to locate practices and possible intentional acts in the past. The broad aim is to outline the frames for Polyagentive archaeology. This is an archaeology that works from the hypothesis that materialities and immaterialities affect people, and from the belief that humans should not be the centre of archaeological research. It attempts to dissolve the human/nonhuman dichotomy by turning past causal relationships of actions and set the known artifacts (polyagents) as initial objects of study and action rather than an unknown human agent of the past. Part of the thesis looks at how time is being dealt with in archaeology. It is argued that an instant moment ends an act and thus separates the object from their agents. Although materiality is devoid of human agents it is both the index and the prototype for other action. This reflects a dialectic relationship with our past human agents (polyagency) that can be summarized through different biographies of polyagents, one focused on material objects and one emphasizing human agent’s corporeal, affective, and practical interactions with this materiality. Two relations forms time shelters that structures and is being structured by temporally limited arenas of power and long-term structuring vectors. It is in this intersection that we can relate objects, humans and macrostructures that lay the foundation to a study of past practices that does take advantage of different ontologies.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Caught Somewhere in Time: Polyagentive Archaeology in the Maya Lowlands","attachmentId":1798090,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/240667/Caught_Somewhere_in_Time_Polyagentive_Archaeology_in_the_Maya_Lowlands","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/240667/Caught_Somewhere_in_Time_Polyagentive_Archaeology_in_the_Maya_Lowlands"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div><div class="ds-related-work--container js-wsj-grid-card" data-collection-position="9" data-entity-id="44170760" data-sort-order="default"><a class="ds-related-work--title js-wsj-grid-card-title ds2-5-body-md ds2-5-body-link" href="https://www.academia.edu/44170760/Anthropology_604_Archaeology_of_Complex_Societies">Anthropology 604: Archaeology of Complex Societies</a><div class="ds-related-work--metadata"><a class="js-wsj-grid-card-author ds2-5-body-sm ds2-5-body-link" data-author-id="3568211" href="https://alabama.academia.edu/AlexandreTokovinine">Alexandre Tokovinine</a></div><p class="ds-related-work--metadata ds2-5-body-xs">2020</p><p class="ds-related-work--abstract ds2-5-body-sm">This course examines archaeological approaches to understanding ancient complex societies: i.e.; those societies in which there was institutionalized inequality, specialization, and interdependence among social groups. The discussion begins with the conceptual framework of social evolution, its critique, and the subsequent search for new theories and methods in the study of ancient states and their historical trajectories. While some of these more recent trends represent a continuation of the evolutionary paradigm, the seminar highlights the methodological and theoretical shift to “archaeology of the political”, alternative ontologies, and network analysis. The case of ancient Maya polities is used to illustrate the interplay of broader paradigmatic changes vs. new field data.</p><div class="ds-related-work--ctas"><button class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"wsj-grid-card-download-pdf-modal","work_title":"Anthropology 604: Archaeology of Complex Societies","attachmentId":64529681,"attachmentType":"pdf","work_url":"https://www.academia.edu/44170760/Anthropology_604_Archaeology_of_Complex_Societies","alternativeTracking":true}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">download</span><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">Download free PDF</span></button><a class="ds2-5-text-link ds2-5-text-link--inline js-wsj-grid-card-view-pdf" href="https://www.academia.edu/44170760/Anthropology_604_Archaeology_of_Complex_Societies"><span class="ds2-5-text-link__content">View PDF</span><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 18px" translate="no">chevron_right</span></a></div></div></div></div><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--wrapper js-loswp-sticky-ctas hidden"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--grid-container"><div class="ds-sticky-ctas--container"><button class="ds2-5-button js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"continue-reading-button--sticky-ctas","attachmentId":37573506,"attachmentType":"pdf","workUrl":null}">See full PDF</button><button class="ds2-5-button ds2-5-button--secondary js-swp-download-button" data-signup-modal="{"location":"download-pdf-button--sticky-ctas","attachmentId":37573506,"attachmentType":"pdf","workUrl":null}"><span class="material-symbols-outlined" style="font-size: 20px" translate="no">download</span>Download PDF</button></div></div></div><div class="ds-below-fold--grid-container"><div class="ds-work--container js-loswp-embedded-document"><div class="attachment_preview" data-attachment="Attachment_37573506" style="display: none"><div class="scribd--being-converted-container">This document is currently being converted.
