While the Spiceworks Community is definitely full of some of the best IT experts the world’s ever seen, we’re here to provide a place for IT pros to ask more advanced questions to each other and get advice and recommendations from their peers in the field.

If you need assistance with a home computer issue, there are several great communities out there that can help you with this, such as Quora.

Only Spiceworks Partners can represent their products and services.

While we allow members to share helpful information and product recommendations with one another in the community, we require that a user be a Spiceworks Partner to represent a product or service for their company. This way, community members know you’re not only approved to engage on behalf of the company, but that you’ve also been vetted through our system.

A topic should only be posted once.

By posting a topic more than once, it will split up the discussion, which makes it harder for other members to find an answer and leads to duplication of effort on the part of the people who can answer your question.

There is no reason to “bump” a topic.

The act of bumping one’s post (which means to respond with no new information but instead just adding content to put it back on the top of the list) contributes nothing constructive to the discussion and is considered spamming. Bumping or spamming will not make the answer appear any faster, so please refrain from doing it.

Check the date before responding to a topic.

When replying to a post that hasn’t been active for months (or years), consider creating a new topic instead, unless the post adds new and relevant information. Posting in old threads is discouraged since it can potentially create a disjointed discussion with outdated information. Furthermore, a new topic post is more likely to be seen and responded to by fellow Community members.

Don’t just post a sentence with a hyperlink.

If you’ve got good information to share with fellow Community members, share it! Putting as much info as you can in your post will help drive good conversations in the Spiceworks Community. We ask that you don’t just post a link to a blog or article without any context, though, since most Community members prefer to stay within Spiceworks when reading discussions and answering questions. In addition, some companies block external websites but allow the Spiceworks site, so this will help members be able to contribute, even if they can’t view the link you posted from their workplace.

Refrain from posting IBL, IBTL, or variants of “In Before The Lock”.

We appreciate that members understand the rules and guidelines to the point where they can predict whether a post or topic is in violation and will be deleted; however, saying it before the lock does not contribute to a constructive community and falls under spamming. If you wish to report a post that violates policy, please use the “Report” option instead of responding to the topic.

Do not participate in “vote brigading” or other forms of community manipulation.

Brigading is the act of coordinating participation around a specific topic with the intent to either manipulate its spiciness or flood a topic with replies voicing agreement with each other. Brigading is typically seen as a form of harassment, as it gives the impression that a large portion of the Community shares the same opinion, while making it difficult for those with opposing opinions to speak up. While you are welcome to share links to topics within Spiceworks, you may not encourage others to vote or reply a certain way (either explicitly or implicitly), whether from within Spiceworks or via any other method. Members who share links with the intent to start a brigade, as well as those who follow those links and engage in brigading, will have their posts removed. For more information on brigading, see this article.

Community Mechanics

When your post is in Moderation.

Sometimes you’ll make a post and get notified that it is in moderation, pending review. This can happen for a variety of reasons.

Probably the most common reason is because you’re a Pimiento (new member) who has a link or image in your post. Due to the high degree of spammers this community attracts (and spammers love to spam links), we make it a point to check out any links posted by a member who has not yet made it to Sonora or higher…

Another reason could be that you used a “blacklisted” word. We have a short list of words we generally keep tabs on to ensure they are being used appropriately and not in a derogatory manner.

And every once in a while, we have to put a Community member in moderation and review all of their posts. This is a rarity and usually only happens when someone is exhibiting behavior not desired in this community (usually someone we believe to be a spammer but we’re not quite sure of the fact yet).

Posting topics as a Pimiento.

There are a variety of limitations on members who are only a Pimiento, which is the first level of our engagement scale generally referred to as your Spice Level. One of these restrictions is only allowing a new Community member to start a limited number of topics.

Make sure you give enough details when asking for help.

Getting help is tough. Make sure your question has enough information in it to get a useful response from other members. The more information you can give, the more likely others can help you with their experiences and expertise. Questions that don’t have enough details may be removed due to this since it is hard to know what the issue is.

Need help asking a better question? Check out this post from one of our community members!

Don’t just post +1 as a response.

Sometimes you see a post you just plainly agree with. Instead of quoting it and replying “+1” – use the Spice-up feature on the post. This is an easy way to indicate that you agree with a post, rather than replying and adding “+1” or “agreed!” Using the Spice-up feature makes it easy to see at a glance which posts are the most popular and avoids the clutter of replies just to express agreement.

That said, if you have some details you want to add, feel free to do the above and then quote the post to add your own experiences and expertise.

Your topic has been moved.

There are a lot of areas to post in the Spiceworks Community and sometimes it’s hard to find the right place to add your topic to. When a more appropriate area for a topic is found, it may be moved there. This helps provide the proper context for your topic and helps ensure that the right people see it, improving the quality of replies and the flow of conversation.

Be careful what information you post publicly such as your email address.

While Spiceworks is a community for IT pros, it is publicly accessible to anyone, including spiders and spammers. It is a good practice not to include your email address where a ‘crawler’ or spammer may see it, because you may suddenly get signed up for some new spam or worse. If you need to engage privately with a member, simply use our Private Messaging system.

Your Community Account cannot be transferred to someone else.

Much like with other communities, your account is your account. We do not allow the transfer of these accounts because it can be confusing to others. If I’m engaging with “Sean” one day and then the account was transferred to “Sarah” later, it can be quite confusing as to what’s going on and who exactly I’m talking to. If someone in your organization needs an account, show them how to sign up… It’s free!

Instead of “backseat moderating,” report the content.

Backseat moderating is when people who are not official moderators try to enforce community rules. Whenever you see a person breaking the rules, use the “Report” option instead of responding to it. This feature lets the Group Admins, Moderators, and Community Team handle the situation without derailing the conversation.

Illegal Activities

Reporting Illegal Content.

We are committed to providing a safe and lawful online environment. In compliance with applicable laws generally, and with the EU Digital Services Act (DSA) specifically, you can report illegal content you see on this platform by emailing [email protected]. Illegal content refers to material that violates the laws of the EU member states. This could include, but is not limited to, child exploitation material, cybercrime, fraud, or incitement of violence.

In case of immediate threat or harm, we recommend contacting local law enforcement directly.

Do not ask how to or promote illegal activities.

This is a professional community and we do not condone or allow the promotion or requesting of any illegal activities including hacking, cracking, or distribution of counterfeit software.

Give the proper credit when posting copyrighted material.

Quotations from things such as news articles are fine, provided they are cited and (if possible) linked to. We ask others to respect our content and ask our users to do the same for other people’s content.

Respecting Others

Do not stoop down to personal attacks.

While we definitely allow heated discussions, we ask that you keep any criticisms or critiques focused on the topic at hand, rather than turning it into an attack against another Community member. Feel free to continue the discussion, but keep it classy!

Be careful with what language you use.

While we understand the need to add emphasis to your comments, some content may be removed depending on the context of the situation. Certain terms and phrases can be harmful, abusive, racially or ethnically offensive, vulgar, sexually explicit, defamatory, infringing, invasive of personal privacy or publicity rights, or in a reasonable person’s view, objectionable. Or the short version; hate speech is not tolerated and do not use offensive language to attack another person.

Additionally, due to the fact that many members access the community in a professional environment, we do not allow profanity or inappropriate words in the topic titles, since topic titles are seen throughout the Spiceworks Community and applications.

Spiceworks is an international community.

One thing to remember is that the Spiceworks Community is comprised of people from all over the globe. As such, Community members may have cultural backgrounds different from yours and may be fluent in other languages and may not even speak the same one(s) as you.

That said, this is also a good reason to fill out some of the details in your profile such as what Country you reside in. This gives other Community members a better idea in case there are any challenges with communication.

Conversations about politics and personal beliefs.

The Spiceworks Community is a place where IT professionals come to get their jobs done and advance their careers. We recognize that political and personal belief situations can have an enormous impact on both individuals and communities. We also recognize that some members want to keep their personal and political beliefs to themselves and prefer not to hear about them in this community unless they directly relate to information technology. Due to this, we limit such discussions, when not directly about information technology, to private discussion groups where members are knowledgeable ahead of time that these kinds of discussion can and will occur.

We know these conversations about politics and personal beliefs can have the potential to become personal, emotional, and divisive but remember that we maintain our rules and guidelines even in these private areas. While some disagreements are to be expected with these conversations, it is critical that members remain constructive and professional, even when they disagree. Avoid sarcasm and snark or questioning another member’s motives or character and ensure your responses focus on the substance of the issues being discussed rather than on personalities or posting styles.

Everyone has opinions.

Sometimes arguments can’t be won, so if you have a contrasting opinion, please state it simply and clearly. If necessary, agree to disagree with others who may have differing opinions. When discussions turn to long, hostile arguments, the topic will be closed or removed and then no one wins. Also, do not dismiss other members by calling them “whiners,” “fanbois,” or other derogatory terms.

Also remember that the moderation team won’t take action on a post that is “wrong.” We leave the discussion and debate up to the experts (that’s you). Feel free to engage directly to discuss why you may disagree with another post, but always remember to stay focused on the topic, and not other members.

Let Me Google That For You (LMGTFY).

Feel free to teach members how to Google but do it in a nice way, rather than just replying “LMGTFY." Remember that they don’t know what they don’t know, so they look to leaders and mentors in the community to help show them the way in a manner that encourages them to make progress. If an answer is simple enough that it can be Googled, we recommend giving them the solution and explaining how you found it.

Stay on topic and do not hijack it.

It can be way too easy to drift into discussions about bacon and unicorns in the Spiceworks Community. Happens to us all the time. But we do ask that members try to keep posts relevant to the topic at hand, especially if a member is looking for an answer to a question.

Do not feed the trolls.

Every so often, you run across a person who may be trolling a conversation. This means that they are purposely making posts that lead to overly strong negative and emotional responses for mere shock value. Instead of “feeding the troll,” simply report the post and avoid responding to it.

There is no need to post in “all caps” or use excessive punctuation.

In other communities, this practice is used to draw attention to one’s post. While everyone wants their posts read, we ask that you refrain from using sensational tactics in order to bring more people to your topic. Let your post stand on its own merit so that it does not attract undue attention.

Spiceworks Partners

Be genuine and bring value to the conversation.

IT pros can be tough nuts to crack. Make sure that your posts don’t read like an ad. Come across as a real person, tailor your message to the conversation, and don’t immediately jump in with a blatant sales pitch or just a quick hyperlink. IT pros will appreciate the effort and you’ll get much better responses.

Only post content that is directly relevant and that is actually a how-to rather than a blog post or top 10 list.

When creating a How-To specifically about your product (with your product in the title), then references and links to your product are appropriate and encouraged. If the How-To is about something else or only related (such as about the same type of software or the same industry), then references and links to your product and services are not appropriate, and will be seen as spam, with the how-to subject to deletion.

Be an individual.

You are representing an organization but we are interacting with you as a person. So tell us about yourself (by filling out your profile) and engage with community members on a personal level. Believe it or not, that is what they want!

Be factual and accurate.

Present your views in a factual and accurate manner. The goal is to foster conversations and exchange of ideas - not another way to advertise products and services. Community members will appreciate you more for adding these kinds of details to the conversation.

Don’t slam competitors.

You can clarify information in a discussion, but don’t put down other vendors or options. By “talking down” to your competition, it not only makes you look bad but also affects your overall brand’s presence within the community (and not in a good way).

Embrace all feedback.

IT Professionals are generally straight to the point and sometimes forget to filter their feedback before giving it. When this happens, it can be a little hard to take at first. But, by joining the conversation, you will receive positive as well as negative feedback and show members you’re open to discuss things.

Do not use Private Messaging to “cold call” Community members.

While it may be an acceptable practice in other communities and social networks, “cold calling” or reaching out to someone unexpectedly via Private Messages is not only frowned upon but puts your brand in a negative light. IT pros value public discussions and will reach out to you or invite you to reach out to them should the need arise.

Post only contests that are exclusive to Community members.

Please use the <use href="#square-full"></use>contests area to promote those contests that are only for the Spiceworks Community. If you have a contest that is not exclusive to the Spiceworks Community, you can still announce it through your vendor category but we reserve the Contest area for contests that are only applicable to this community.

Private Groups

What is a private group?

These are areas that facilitate private conversations among a small group of people. To access and engage within one, a member must be approved by the Group Admin(s) to be a member of it. See this blog entry for more details.

What is a User Group and how does it differ from a private group?

User Groups are private groups created by members. Where it differs from a private group is that User Groups can be publicly listed, allowing members to browse the available groups and request to join any that catch their eye.

Community rules and guidelines do apply here.

Please note that all Community rules and guidelines still apply in private areas. These are areas where you may wish to discuss things privately with a group of peers but not a place to post illegal materials or berate others. Groups created for the purpose of discriminating against or harassing others are not permitted.

Private groups, including User Groups, are still moderated.

Group Admins actively monitor and manage content within their private group. While Spiceworks does not actively monitor content within private groups, we will investigate anything reported to us and take appropriate actions – anything from editing and removing content to taking more severe measures. Should a group become consistently problematic, we will have no recourse but to remove it from the community.

There are no points for private and User Groups.

While we appreciate the fact that members of the community sometimes want to discuss things privately, we do not award points for engaging or for Best Answers and/or Helpful Posts because this content is not accessible to the entire community.

Privacy on the Internet?

While we do our best to make these areas secure, please realize that there is nothing stopping a member of the group from taking a screenshot of a conversation and sharing it publicly. In addition, if you link to external content within a topic in one of these areas, the site you are linking to will see the topic as a referer. While the external site manager may not see the content itself, they will see the topic name since it is part of the URL.

Archiving Inactive Groups

Occasionally we’ll do a cleanup of inactive private and User Groups in the community. Any groups with no posts within a period of about six months will likely be archived by the Community Team. We’re always happy to chat about your group and help out if you’re having issues running and maintaining it, so feel free to reach out to us anytime by emailing [email protected]!

Getting Promoted

We’re always looking for more groups to add to the wider community. If your group hits the member limit or grows too big to manage as a User Group, we may get in touch with you to discuss the possibility of converting the group into a public group! Public groups are visible to all members and have no membership limits, allowing anyone to join and participate in conversations in the group YOU started.

Can I restrict who can join my User Group?

As a Group Admin, it’s in your hands to decide who can and can’t join your group. That said, we will not tolerate any forms of discrimination or harassment in the Spiceworks Community. If reported, we will investigate and take appropriate action if needed.

I want to join a group but they rejected me!

It’s completely up to the Group Admin (GA) to decide who can and can’t join their group. If you haven’t been allowed in, we’d recommend chatting with the GA to better understand why you aren’t a good fit for the group. And don’t forget, you can always create your own user group if you’d prefer to run one yourself!

 3 Spice ups

Terms of Agreement / ban u gotta be kidding

Brand Guidelines: 'Live Chat'
