Jordan<MH3383> to the west<MH3220>, and all<MH3605> the kings<MH4428> of the Canaanites<MH3669a> who<MH834> <i>were</i> by the sea<MH3220>, heard<MH8085> how<MH854, 834> the LORD<MH3068> had dried<MH3001> up<MH3001> the waters<MH4325> of the Jordan<MH3383> before<MH4480, 6440> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> until<MH5704> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>they had crossed<MH5674a>, that their hearts<MH3824> melted<MH4549>, and there was no<MH3808> spirit<MH7307> in them any<MH5750> longer<MH5750> because<MH4480, 6440> of the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/5-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>At that time<MH6256> the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to Joshua<MH3091>, “Make<MH6213a> for yourself flint<MH6864> knives<MH2719> and circumcise<MH4135> again<MH7725> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> the second<MH8145> time<MH8145>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/5-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>So Joshua<MH3091> made<MH6213a> himself flint<MH6864> knives<MH2719> and circumcised<MH4135> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> at <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>Gibeath-haaraloth<MH1389, 6190>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/5-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>This<MH2088> is the reason<MH1697> why<MH834> Joshua<MH3091> circumcised<MH4135> them: all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> who came<MH3318> out<MH3318> of Egypt<MH4714> who were males<MH2145>, all<MH3605> the men<MH376> of war<MH4421>, died<MH4191> in the wilderness<MH4057b> along the way<MH1870> after they came<MH3318> out<MH3318> of Egypt<MH4714>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/5-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>For all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> who came<MH3318> out<MH3318> were circumcised<MH4135>, but all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> who were born<MH3209> in the wilderness<MH4057b> along the way<MH1870> as they came<MH3318> out<MH3318> of Egypt<MH4714> had not been circumcised<MH4135>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/5-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>For the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> walked<MH1980> forty<MH705> years<MH8141> in the wilderness<MH4057b>, until<MH5704> all<MH3605> the nation<MH1471>, <i>that is,</i> the men<MH376> of war<MH4421> who came<MH3318> out<MH3318> of Egypt<MH4714>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>perished<MH8552> because<MH834> they did not listen<MH8085> to the voice<MH6963> of the LORD<MH3068>, to whom<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> had sworn<MH7650> that He would not let them see<MH7200> the land<MH776> which<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> had sworn<MH7650> to their fathers<MH1> to give<MH5414> us, a land<MH776> flowing<MH2100> with milk<MH2461> and honey<MH1706>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/5-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>So their children<MH1121> whom He raised<MH6965> up<MH6965> in<MH8478> their place<MH8478>, Joshua<MH3091> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>circumcised<MH4135>; for they were uncircumcised<MH6189>, because<MH3588> they had not circumcised<MH4135> them along the way<MH1870>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/5-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Now when<MH3512c> they had finished<MH8552> circumcising<MH4135> all<MH3605> the nation<MH1471>, they remained<MH3427> in<MH8478> their places<MH8478> in the camp<MH4264> until<MH5704> they recovered<MH2421a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/5-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to Joshua<MH3091>, “Today<MH3117> I have rolled<MH1556> away<MH1556> the shame<MH2781> of Egypt<MH4714> from you.” So the name<MH8034> of that place<MH4725> is called<MH7121> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>Gilgal<MH1537> to this<MH2088> day<MH3117>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/5-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>While the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> camped<MH2583> at Gilgal<MH1537> they celebrated<MH6213a> the Passover<MH6453> on the evening<MH6153> of the fourteenth<MH702, 6240> day<MH3117> of the month<MH2320> on the desert<MH6160> plains<MH6160> of Jericho<MH3405>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/5-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then on the day<MH4283> after<MH4283> the Passover<MH6453>, on <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>that very<MH6106> day<MH3117>, they ate<MH398> some<MH4480> of the produce<MH5669> of the land<MH776>, unleavened<MH4682> cakes<MH4682> and roasted<MH7033> <i>grain.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/5-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>And the manna<MH4478a> ceased<MH7673a> on the day<MH4283> after<MH4283> they had eaten<MH398> some<MH4480> of the produce<MH8393> of the land<MH776>, so that the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> no<MH3808> longer<MH5750> had<MH1961> manna<MH4478a>, but they ate<MH398> some<MH4480> of the yield<MH8393> of the land<MH776> of Canaan<MH3667a> during that year<MH8141>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/5-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Now it came<MH1961> about<MH1961> when Joshua<MH3091> was by Jericho<MH3405>, he raised<MH5375> his eyes<MH5869> and looked<MH7200>, and behold<MH2009>, a man<MH376> was standing<MH5975> opposite<MH5048> him with his sword<MH2719> drawn<MH8025> in his hand<MH3027>, and Joshua<MH3091> went<MH1980> to him and said<MH559> to him, “Are you for us or<MH518> for our enemies<MH6862c>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/5-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>He said<MH559>, “No<MH3808>; rather<MH3588> I have come<MH935> now<MH6258> <i>as</i> captain<MH8269> of the army<MH6635> of the LORD<MH3068>.” And Joshua<MH3091> fell<MH5307> on his face<MH6440> to the ground<MH776>, and bowed<MH2331c> down<MH2331c>, and said<MH559> to him, “What<MH4100> has my lord<MH136> to say<MH1696> to his servant<MH5650>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/joshua/5-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>And the captain<MH8269> of the LORD’S<MH3068> army<MH6635> said<MH559> to Joshua<MH3091>, “Remove<MH5394> your sandals<MH5275> from your feet<MH7272>, for the place<MH4725> where<MH834, 5921> you are standing<MH5975> is holy<MH6944>.” And Joshua<MH3091>
