<p>我々が使うパソコンのキーボードの配列は、よほどこだわってない限りQWERTY（クワーティ）配列になっていると思います。</p> <p>別に何かルールで決まっているわけではなく、単に世界中に広く普及しているだけで、色々な配列が世には存在し、こだわりを持つ人も多くいます。ですが、会社や学校で支給されるパソコンはQWERTY配列なので、いくらこだわりがあっても逃げられない感があります。</p> <p> QWERTY配列が生まれたきっかけは、タイプライターの性能がよくなく、頻出するキーが近い位置にあると機械が故障するため、わざと頻出キーを遠くに配置しているという説が根強くありますが、この説は現在は疑問が呈されています。</p> <div align="center"> <script async="" QWERTY配列＝タイプライターの故障を防ぐため説</h3> <p><img class="hatena-fotolife" title="f:id:titioya:20200724151827j:plain" src="https://cdn-ak.f.st-hatena.com/images/fotolife/t/titioya/20200724/20200724151827.jpg" alt="f:id:titioya:20200724151827j:plain" width="467" /></p> <p>QWERTY配列は文章を打つ際の配列としては効率が悪く、一般的にタイピングの速度が遅くなると言われています。</p> <p>初期の手動式タイプライターは、文字を打つたびに活字アームを元の位置に戻さないといけず、素早く次のキーを打ってしまうと活字アームが絡んで故障してしまうため、わざと効率が悪く時間がかかる配列にして故障を防ごうとした、その配列の名残がまだ残っているのだ、というものが非常によく知られたQWERTY配列誕生説です。わざと遅くするために、頻出の組み合わせである「ie」＋「ei」、「he」＋「eh」の組み合わせを右手と左手それぞれで打たせるようになっていると説明されます。</p> <p>ではなぜ<strong>英単語で頻出である「th」が斜め隣りに、「er」が隣り合わせになっているのだという反論</strong>が簡単に出てきます。</p> <p>京都大学の安岡孝一教授は論文や著書「<a href="https://www.amazon.co.jp/exec/obidos/ASIN/4757141769/hayskonpa-22/">キーボード配列QWERTYの謎</a>」の中でこの点を指摘。頻出の組み合わせの１位は「th」+「ht」、第 2 位は「er」+「re」であり、定説でだった「ei」+「ie」は44位であるとして、<strong>IとEを離して配置したとしても活字アームの安全性が確保されたことにはならない</strong>と主張しています。</p> <p>また、ごく初期のQWERTY配列のタイプライターの活字アームは下から打ち上げて紙の裏側に印字される仕掛けであり、<strong>通説で言われる「活字アームが高速で前に引き下げられて絡まってしまう」ことはあり得ない</strong>と安岡氏は主張します。活字アームが引き下げられる構造は、QWERTY配列の発明の1874年よりも後の1888年の製品「Bar-Lock」からであるとしています。</p> <p>さらに、初期のタイプライターは電信会社がモールス信号を受信するのに使われていたため、<strong>瞬間的に聞き分けて文字を起こさねばならないオペレーターのニーズに反してわざとキーボードを遅くさせる配列をしたとは考えづらい</strong>とも主張しています。</p> <p><br />ではどういう意図でQWERTY配列が設計され定着したのか。</p> <p>それを知るにはタイプライターの歴史を見ていかねばなりません。</p> <p> </p> <h3>２. タイプライター発明史</h3> <p>「文書を打つ機械」の開発は16世紀から始まり、多くの発明家による技術改良を重ねて19世紀にタイプライターが誕生したことになっています。</p> <p>最初期は1575年、イタリアの版画家フランチェスコ・ランパゼットが、「スクリットゥーラ・タッティレ」という名の紙に文字を転写する機械を発明しました。それから少し時間が空き、1714年、イギリスにてヘンリー・ミルという男がタイプライターに似た機械の特許を取得しました。しかしこれがどういう仕組みで動いていたかはよく分かっていません。</p> <p>19世紀前半にはイタリア人のアゴスティーノ・ファントーニとペレグリノ・トゥーリが、それぞれ別個に盲目の人が文字を打つためのタイプライターを発明。その少し後の1829 年にはアメリカ人のウィリアム・オースティン・バートが「タイポグラファー」と呼ばれる機械の特許を取得しました。</p> <p><img class="hatena-fotolife" title="f:id:titioya:20200724131008j:plain" src="https://cdn-ak.f.st-hatena.com/images/fotolife/t/titioya/20200724/20200724131008.jpg" alt="f:id:titioya:20200724131008j:plain" width="201" /></p> <p><strong>ロンドン科学博物館はこのタイポグラファーを「初めて作られた筆記機械」と説明している</strong>ようなのですが、それ以前にもあったと考えるのが公平な気がします。このタイポグラファーは商業的に成功を収めることはありませんでした。</p> <p>同じころ再びイタリアでは、タイプライターに憑りつかれた発明家ジュゼッペ・ラヴィッツァが40年近くを費やし、ピアノ型のキーボードを備えたタイプライターを発明しました。</p> <p>1861年、ブラジルでは神父のフランシスコ・ジョアン・デ・アゼヴェードが、木をナイフで削り出してタイプライターを作りました。ブラジル皇帝ペドロ2世は、この発明を称賛し神父に金メダルを授けています。このことから、<strong>ブラジルではアゼヴェード神父が世界初のタイプライターの発明者</strong>ということになっています。</p> <p><img class="hatena-fotolife" title="f:id:titioya:20200724132427j:plain" src="https://cdn-ak.f.st-hatena.com/images/fotolife/t/titioya/20200724/20200724132427.jpg" alt="f:id:titioya:20200724132427j:plain" width="240" /></p> <p>所変わって、オーストリア＝ハンガリー帝国の一部だった南チロルでは、大工Peter Mitterhoferが1864年から1867年にかけてタイプライターのプロトタイプを開発しました。</p> <p><img class="hatena-fotolife" title="f:id:titioya:20200724133549j:plain" src="https://cdn-ak.f.st-hatena.com/images/fotolife/t/titioya/20200724/20200724133549.jpg" alt="f:id:titioya:20200724133549j:plain" width="394" /></p> <p>19世紀に入り、マスメディアの発達やビジネスのスピード化に伴い、文書をより素早く効率的に作成するというニーズは急速に高まっていました。そのニーズに応え、発明家たちが効率的な文書作成機械を追求し、世界中で様々なタイプライターが発明されていきました。</p> <p>そして、QWERTY配列を発明しタイプライターの商業的成功に初めて成功した人物が、アメリカ人の発明家クリストファー・レイサム・ショールズです。</p> <p> </p> <h3>３. QWERTY配列の発明</h3> <p><img class="hatena-fotolife" title="f:id:titioya:20080213214735j:plain" src="https://cdn-ak.f.st-hatena.com/images/fotolife/t/titioya/20080213/20080213214735.jpg" alt="f:id:titioya:20080213214735j:plain" width="202" /></p> <p>ミルウォーキーに住むクリストファー・レイサム・ショールズは1860年代、自分のビジネスをより効率的にするために様々な機械を開発していました。</p> <p>1868年、彼は発明家仲間であるサミュエル・W・ソーレ、カルロス・グリデンと共に、「タイプライター」を発明し特許を取得しました。<strong>この時発明したタイプライターのキーボードはピアノに似ており、28鍵のアルファベット配列で構成されていました</strong>。</p> <p><img class="hatena-fotolife" title="f:id:titioya:20200723091528p:plain" src="https://cdn-ak.f.st-hatena.com/images/fotolife/t/titioya/20200723/20200723091528.png" alt="f:id:titioya:20200723091528p:plain" width="414" /></p> <p>その2年後の1870年4月までに、ショールズは同じく発明家仲間のマティアス・シュワルバッハにアドバイスを受け、大文字、数字2から9、ハイフン、コンマ、ピリオド、クエスチョンマークを含む38鍵の配列を設計しました。キーボードは4列で構成され、左の真ん中からAで始まりほぼアルファベット順に並んでいますが、「A」「E」「I」「U」「O」母音が上段に配列されるなど打ちやすさへの工夫が見られます。</p> <p><img class="hatena-fotolife" title="f:id:titioya:20200724142508j:plain" src="https://cdn-ak.f.st-hatena.com/images/fotolife/t/titioya/20200724/20200724142508.jpg" alt="f:id:titioya:20200724142508j:plain" width="455" /></p> <p>1872年4月のバージョンでは、配列が変化し、現在のQWERTY配列に近いものになっています。1870年には「E」の横にあった「I」が右に移動しています。</p> <p><img class="hatena-fotolife" title="f:id:titioya:20200724145048j:plain" src="https://cdn-ak.f.st-hatena.com/images/fotolife/t/titioya/20200724/20200724145048.jpg" alt="f:id:titioya:20200724145048j:plain" width="478" /></p> <p>なぜこのような配置変更がなされたのか。安岡氏は一つの仮説を提唱しています。</p> <p>それは、<strong>当時は「I」「O」が数字の「1」「0」の代わりだったから</strong>、というものです。</p> <p>当時のタイプライターには数字の「1」と「0」がなく、「I」「O」をそれぞれ代替として用いていました。<strong>当時は1870年代だったので、頻出する「7」「8」「I」が近いほうが連続して早く打てた</strong>というわけです。</p> <p>ショールズのタイププライターは1872 年当時、Automatic Telegraph Company や Western Union Telegraph Company などの電信会社に納入されており、電信会社のオペレーターの現場の声に合わせて改良されたと考えられます。</p> <p> もっともこれだけでなく、当時の頻出単語や数字をチューニングして配列していった結果QWERTY配列が誕生した考えらえる、と安岡氏は主張しています。<strong>効率を落とすためではなくむしろ、（1870年代当時の）効率性を追求した結果であった可能性が高い</strong>のです。そして1874年におおよそ現在のQWERTY配列が最終的に登場しました。もっとも、「M」やコロン、クエスチョンマーク、アンドなどの配置はその後も配置調整が何度も行われています。ショールズ自身はQWERTY配列がベストだとは思っていなかったようで、1890年に結核で亡くなる直前まで様々な配列を作っていたようです。</p> <p>しかし、彼がベストだと思っていなかったQWERTY配列は、彼自身が推進した販売戦略により爆発的に世に普及することになります。</p> <p>PR</p> <div align="center"> <script async="" src="//pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/js/adsbygoogle.js"></script> <ins class="adsbygoogle" style="display: block;" data-ad-client="ca-pub-5541890868389318" data-ad-slot="9589575881" data-ad-format="auto"> </ins> <script>// <![CDATA[ (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); // ]]></script> </div> <p> </p> <h3>４. レミントン社によるタイプライター販促活動</h3> <p><img class="hatena-fotolife" title="f:id:titioya:20200723092457j:plain" src="https://cdn-ak.f.st-hatena.com/images/fotolife/t/titioya/20200723/20200723092457.jpg" alt="f:id:titioya:20200723092457j:plain" width="313" /></p> <p>ショールズがタイプライターを生産・販売し始めたころ、彼は量産・普及のためには限界があるとして製造パートナーを求めていました。</p> <p>そして1873年、銃やライフルを製造していたE.レミントン・アンド・サンズ社と提携します。この会社は南北戦争（1861-1865）により急成長し近代的な製造設備を備えていました。レミントン社はショールズからタイプライターの製造権を得て、1874年7月QWERTY配列のタイプライター「ショールズ＆グリデン」が販売されました（当時の販売名義はJames Densmore）。</p> <p><img class="hatena-fotolife" title="f:id:titioya:20200724163102p:plain" src="https://cdn-ak.f.st-hatena.com/images/fotolife/t/titioya/20200724/20200724163102.png" alt="f:id:titioya:20200724163102p:plain" width="191" /></p> <p>初号機は大変高額で故障も多かったため、あまり売れ行きはよくありませんでしたが、初号機の欠点を克服し小文字も打てるように改良された2号機が1878年に発売されると、オフィスの速記者を中心に注文が増えてきました。</p> <p>ショールズは1873年6月にレミントン社のマーケティング担当のヘンリー・H・ベネディクトに、さらにタイプライターを普及させるための販促の相談をしていました。<strong>マーケターたちは、レミントン社のあまり直感的でなくトレーニングが必要なQWERTY配列を「人々に広く教育」することでシェアを獲得できる</strong>と提案しました。</p> <p>ウィリアム・ワイコフという人が両手の第1指から第3指までを使った「6本指タイピング法」を提唱して学校で教え始めました。その後、1882年8月までに両手の第1指から第4指を使った8本指タイピング法が発表され、ワイコフの「タッチタイピング」の講座で採用されました。</p> <p>レミントン社はワイコフの子会社を基点に、職業訓練校や大学、世界青年女性キリスト教協会（YWCA）などを対象に、「タッチタイピング」講座や講座付きタイプライターセットを無料または割引価格で提供しました。タイプライティングのオペレーターは当時女性の社会進出のための重要な職種で、オフィスの事務や秘書業務のために多くの女性がタッチタイピングを学びました。数年後にはヨーロッパ各地にレミントン・タイピング・スクールが開設されました。1874年にはアメリカの事務職の女性比率は4%未満でしたが、1900年には約75%にまで増加していました。</p> <p><strong>レミントン社の講座でQWERTY配列のタイピングを従業員たちに学ばせた企業は、当然レミントン社製のタイプライターを購入せなばならないというわけです。</strong></p> <p>1890年までに、10万台以上のレミントン社製タイプライターが売れ、アメリカ中で使用されるようになりました。その後、1893年にレミントン社は競合であるカリグラフ社、ヨスト社、デンスモア社、スミス・プレミエ社の5大タイプライターメーカーと大合併。<strong>「ユニオン・タイプライター・カンパニー（Union Typewriter Company）」が設立され、1898年6月には正式にQWERTY配列がデファクトスタンダードとして採用された</strong>のでした。ユニオン・タイプライターはタイプライター販売の70%以上の市場シェアを獲得しました。</p> <p>競合他社はタッチタイピング講座がいかに販促に重要であるかを理解できず、技術改良や価格戦略、広告で対抗しようとしました。しかし1901年までに、アメリカの高等教育機関の半数がレミントンの「タッチタイピング」方式を標準化し、もはや勝ち目はありませんでした。最終的にはすべてのタイプライター・ブランドが降参してQWERTY配列に移行しなくてはならなくなりました。</p> <p> </p> <h3>５.
