In the cultural context of the Roman Empire, status and hierarchy were highly valued, and being "first" was associated with power and authority. Jesus challenges this notion by redefining what it means to be first in the Kingdom of God. This teaching is consistent with other biblical passages, such as <a href="/matthew/20-16.htm">Matthew 20:16</a>, where Jesus states, "So the last will be first, and the first will be last." It reflects the upside-down nature of God's kingdom, where humility and service are exalted over worldly power.<p><b>must be the slave of all</b><br>The term "slave" here is translated from the Greek word "doulos," which implies complete devotion and service to others. In the historical context, slavery was a common institution in the Roman world, often associated with a lack of freedom and dignity. However, Jesus uses this imagery to illustrate the radical call to servanthood in His kingdom. This concept is further exemplified in Jesus' own life, as seen in <a href="/philippians/2-7.htm">Philippians 2:7</a>, where He "made Himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant." The call to be a "slave of all" is a call to selflessness and sacrificial love, mirroring Christ's example. This teaching is a fulfillment of the prophecy in <a href="/isaiah/53.htm">Isaiah 53</a>, where the Messiah is depicted as a suffering servant, highlighting the paradoxical nature of true greatness in God's eyes.<div class="vheading2">Persons / Places / Events</div>1. <b><a href="/topical/j/jesus_christ.htm">Jesus Christ</a></b><br>The central figure in this passage, Jesus is teaching His disciples about the nature of true greatness in the Kingdom of God.<br><br>2. <b><a href="/topical/d/disciples.htm">Disciples</a></b><br>The immediate audience of Jesus' teaching, they are learning about the values of servanthood and humility.<br><br>3. <b><a href="/topical/j/james_and_john.htm">James and John</a></b><br>Earlier in the chapter, these two disciples request positions of honor, prompting Jesus to teach about servanthood.<br><br>4. <b><a href="/topical/j/jerusalem.htm">Jerusalem</a></b><br>The place where Jesus and His disciples are heading, symbolizing the culmination of Jesus' earthly ministry and His ultimate act of servanthood.<br><br>5. <b><a href="/topical/g/gentiles.htm">Gentiles</a></b><br>Mentioned in the broader context of <a href="/bsb/mark/10.htm">Mark 10</a>, representing those who exercise authority in a worldly manner, contrasting with Jesus' teaching on servanthood.<div class="vheading2">Teaching Points</div><b><a href="/topical/t/the_paradox_of_greatness.htm">The Paradox of Greatness</a></b><br>In God's Kingdom, true greatness is found in humility and service, not in power or status.<br><br><b><a href="/topical/s/servanthood_as_leadership.htm">Servanthood as Leadership</a></b><br>Jesus redefines leadership as serving others, challenging worldly notions of authority and control.<br><br><b><a href="/topical/i/imitating_christ.htm">Imitating Christ</a></b><br>Believers are called to follow Jesus' example of servanthood, reflecting His love and humility in their interactions.<br><br><b><a href="/topical/t/the_heart_of_a_servant.htm">The Heart of a Servant</a></b><br>Cultivating a servant's heart requires intentionality and a willingness to put others' needs before our own.<br><br><b><a href="/topical/e/eternal_perspective.htm">Eternal Perspective</a></b><br>Serving others aligns with eternal values, storing up treasures in heaven rather than seeking earthly recognition.<div class="vheading2">Lists and Questions</div><a href="/top10/lessons_from_mark_10.htm">Top 10 Lessons from Mark 10</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/q/bible's_view_on_greatness,_smallness.htm">What does the Bible say about greatness and smallness?</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/q/what_is_hope_if_it_is_already_seen.htm">What does the Bible say about greatness and smallness?</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/q/is_the_kkk_a_christian_group.htm">Is the KKK considered a Christian group?</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/q/how_do_colonialism_and_imperialism_differ.htm">How do colonialism and imperialism differ?</a><a name="commentary" id="commentary"></a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/mark/10-44.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Greek</div><span class="word">and</span><br /><span class="grk">&#954;&#945;&#8054;</span> <span class="translit">(kai)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunction<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/greek/strongs_2532.htm">Strong's 2532: </a> </span><span class="str2">And, even, also, namely. </span><br /><br /><span class="word">whoever</span><br /><span class="grk">&#8003;&#962;</span> <span class="translit">(hos)</span><br /><span class="parse">Personal / Relative Pronoun - Nominative Masculine Singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/greek/strongs_3739.htm">Strong's 3739: </a> </span><span class="str2">Who, which, what, that. </span><br /><br /><span class="word">wants</span><br /><span class="grk">&#952;&#941;&#955;&#8131;</span> <span class="translit">(thel&#275;)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Present Subjunctive Active - 3rd Person Singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/greek/strongs_2309.htm">Strong's 2309: </a> </span><span class="str2">To will, wish, desire, be willing, intend, design. </span><br /><br /><span class="word">to be</span><br /><span class="grk">&#949;&#7990;&#957;&#945;&#953;</span> <span class="translit">(einai)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Present Infinitive Active<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/greek/strongs_1510.htm">Strong's 1510: </a> </span><span class="str2">I am, exist.
