This type of systems has been used to generate pervasive game experiences, to which new devices have been incorporated in the contexts of game-based systems (GBS). These advances have allowed the emergence of new enriched experiences through the integration of the virtual and real worlds within the game world. Although these new paradigms offer different benefits, they also generate new challenges for their design, being more complex when they are intended to be used in specific populations such as the elderly, which is one of the main objectives of this research work. These experiences can be oriented in different ways, some of them being entertainment, leisure, learning or obtaining benefits. In order to achieve such pervasive experiences, the existing technological gap and the consequences of human aging, such as physical and cognitive abilities and the impact on their emotional level, must be considered. For this reason, this article identifies the different aspects that should be considered for the design of pervasive GBS in order to adjust to the particularities of this population.</p><div Providing a contemporary overview of the literature in the field of digital gaming and ageing the authors aim to demonstrate the work that has been covered by international academics. These domains include a series of reviews which have focused on health rehabilitation and gaming, eHealth, digital gaming, fall prevention and active ageing. Further discussion focuses on the use and deployment of mobile health apps and digital gaming and how they are used within the field of ageing, in regard to gamification, chronic health conditions and the nature of interaction and engagement by users. Results are presented from the iStoppFalls project, whereby an ICT survey was deployed to ascertain participants ICT usage, ownership and behaviours. The results in this chapter focus primarily on digital games, how participants learnt to play games, their preferred game genres and online gaming habits.
