class="post-content post-content-double"> <p>Kodak's stock price has tripled since Tuesday as the company announced plans to develop a new blockchain-based digital rights management platform for photographers. Called <a href="https://kodakcoin.com/">KodakOne</a>, the new platform, which isn't available yet, will allow photographers to publicly register their rights in digital photographs on an immutable blockchain.</p> <p>The platform will include a digital currency called Kodak Coin that will be used to make licensing payments. There's an initial coin offering scheduled for January 31.</p> <p>"KodakOne provides continual Web crawling in order to protect the IP of its members," the KodakOne website says. "Where unlicensed usage of images is detected, KodakOne can efficiently manage the post-licensing process."</p> <p>Licensing photographs on a blockchain doesn't seem like a crazy idea. Unlicensed online use of photographs has been a long-standing challenge for professional photographers. In theory, blockchain payments could reduce the frictions involved in photo licensing.</p> <p>But the devil is in the details—and so far, details have been somewhat scarce. So we did some digging. And what we found was surprising.</p> <p>The evidence strongly suggests that Kodak Coin is the re-branding of an initial coin offering called RYDE coin that never got much attention and was apparently aborted days before Kodak Coin was announced. Until recently, the project had a <a href="https://www.startengine.com/wenn">page on the crowdfunding site Start Engine</a>. The page is no longer there, but Google <a href="https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:hp219DhY7ZIJ:https://www.startengine.com/wenn+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us">cached a copy</a> of the site on January 3.</p> <p>As recently as last week, RYDE coin was being pitched as a way of expanding the licensing business of its creator, paparazzi photo company WENN Media. Before 2012, Kodak mostly produced and marketed its own products in the thriving film photography business. Then, film photography cratered and took Kodak with it. In recent years, Kodak has taken a page from Donald Trump's playbook and aggressively licensed its brand to other companies. Many "Kodak" products are actually developed and sold by other companies—but get a credibility boost from the famous Kodak brand.</p> <p>You can see the breadth of Kodak's licensing program just by looking at announcements Kodak made ahead of this week's <a href="https://arstechnica.com/series/ars-at-ces-2018/">CES</a> trade show. Kodak has licensed its brand to a company called JK Imaging to make the <a href="https://www.kodak.com/us/en/corp/Press_center/KODAK_PIXPRO_Digital_Camera_Brand_Continues_to_Expand_and_Grow_into_2018_with_a_Sneak_Peek_and_Preview_into_Next_Generation_360_3D_and_VR_Cameras/default.htm">Kodak PixPro line of digital cameras</a>. It licensed its brand to Prinics to sell a <a href="https://www.kodak.com/us/en/corp/Press_center/Kodak_Branded_Instant_Print_Consumer_Product_Line_Grows_with_the_Addition_of_the_KODAK_Mini_2_Instant_Photo_Printer/default.htm">Kodak-branded photo printer</a>. Twindom has licensed the Kodak brand to sell the <a href="https://www.kodak.com/us/en/corp/Press_center/Twindom_and_Kodak_Announce_the_KODAK_Full_Body_3D_Scanner/default.htm">KODAK Full Body 3D Scanner</a>. Bolstered by the Kodak brand, they're pitching Kodak Coin as a universal platform for licensing photographs. The press release mentions that WENN "works with approximately 2,500 professional photographers," without being too specific about what kind of photography they're doing.</p> <p>To be fair, WENN did tout the possibility for RYDE coin to eventually grow to be much bigger than the paparazzi business.</p> <p>"WENN clearly understands the monetization models for rights-cleared IP and plans to develop its blockchain platform to deliver registration, licensing, infringement, and other unique revenue streams for the benefit of this community," the RYDE crowdfunding page said. "The RYDE coin offering plans to create a global marketplace for the exchange of value around IP, beginning with images and quickly moving to other IP asset classes."</p> <p>Prior to the Kodak partnership, it would have been hard to get anyone to take WENN's product seriously as a general platform for licensing photographs. WENN's strategy was presumably to get traction in the celebrity photography business first, then later expand to other kinds of photographs and eventually to other kinds of content.</p> <p>But the Kodak deal changes that calculus. The Kodak brand could give the project the credibility it needs to get a serious look from companies across the publishing industry.
