It is associated with the ancient cities of the plain, which include Sodom and Gomorrah. The name "Zeboim" is derived from the Hebrew word "צְבֹעִים" (Tsebo'im), meaning "hyenas" or "gazelles," indicating a place that may have been known for its wildlife or desolation.

Zeboim as a City:
Zeboim is mentioned in the context of the infamous cities of the plain, which were destroyed by divine judgment due to their wickedness. In Genesis 10:19, Zeboim is listed among the cities that marked the borders of the Canaanites: "And the territory of the Canaanites extended from Sidon toward Gerar as far as Gaza, and then toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboim, as far as Lasha." This indicates that Zeboim was part of the region known for its moral depravity and subsequent destruction.

The destruction of Zeboim, along with Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboiim, is recounted in Genesis 19, where God rained down sulfur and fire from heaven, obliterating these cities. Although Zeboim is not explicitly mentioned in the Genesis 19 account, its inclusion in the list of cities in Genesis 10 suggests it shared the same fate.

Zeboim as a Valley:
The Valley of Zeboim is mentioned in 1 Samuel 13:18, during the time of King Saul. The passage describes a Philistine raiding party that turned toward the Valley of Zeboim: "Another company turned toward Beth-horon, and another company turned toward the border overlooking the Valley of Zeboim facing the wilderness." This reference places the Valley of Zeboim in the region of Benjamin, near the wilderness, and suggests it was a strategic location during military campaigns.

Historical and Theological Significance:
Zeboim, as part of the cities of the plain, serves as a symbol of divine judgment against sin and corruption. The destruction of these cities is often cited in biblical texts as a warning to future generations about the consequences of turning away from God's commandments. In Deuteronomy 29:23, Moses warns the Israelites that their land could become "like the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboim, which the LORD overthrew in His fierce anger."

The mention of Zeboim in the context of the Philistine raids during Saul's reign highlights the ongoing conflict between the Israelites and their neighbors. The Valley of Zeboim's strategic importance underscores the challenges faced by the Israelites in securing their land and maintaining their covenant relationship with God.

Conclusion:
While Zeboim is not as frequently mentioned as some other biblical locations, its association with the cities of the plain and its strategic significance in the time of Saul provide valuable insights into the historical and moral landscape of the biblical narrative. The account of Zeboim serves as a reminder of the importance of faithfulness to God's laws and the consequences of moral decay.
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Zeboim
(gazelles).

One of the five cities of the "plain" or circle of Jordan. The wilderness is no doubt the district of uncultivated mountain tops and sides which lies between the central district of Benjamin and the Jordan valley. There are several valleys with names derived from the hyena, so common in these parts. There is a small branch valley called Shakked dab`a, "ravine of the hyenas," North of the Wady kelt (Grove), a, Wady abu dab`a, "valley of the father of hyenas, which joins the Wady kelt from the South (Marti), and a large and well-known Wady dab`a, "valley of hyenas," which runs parallel with the Wady kelt, some 3 miles farther South, and ends at the Dead Sea. The first of these, which apparently leads to Mukhmas itself, seems the most probable. See Conder's Handbook, 241.

E. W. G.
