class="wysiwyg_area"> <div class="articleBodyText"> <p>SILICON VALLEY -- Google parent Alphabet has chosen Fiat Chrysler Automobiles as its first automaker partner for developing an autonomous vehicle, moving a once futuristic idea one step closer to commercialization.</p><p>Fiat Chrysler will supply 100 new Chrysler Pacifica hybrid minivans by year-end and help modify them so that Google can install its autonomous driving system. The tie-up announced Tuesday is not exclusive, meaning the technology giant could jump ship and work with a different partner.</p><div class="page_limit free"></div><div class="page_limit"></div><p>The deal will more than double the 70 vehicles in Google's self-driving fleet, which consists of Lexus RX450h autos from <a href="/web/20160505040818/http://asia.nikkei.com/Company/003K89-E" target="_self" alt="003K89-E" class="mwMoTrg">Toyota Motor</a> retrofitted for testing and prototype two-seaters that the California company designed on its own. These cars have driven 1.5 million miles on public roads in four U.S. cities.</p><p>"The opportunity to work closely with FCA engineers will accelerate our efforts to develop a fully self-driving car," said John Krafcik, head of the Google Self-Driving Car Project.</p><p>Neither company has indicated whether the partnership envisions mass production of such cars. Google has said previously it does not intend to manufacture such vehicles, but a successful collaboration could lead to a broader partnership involving production of a mass-market autonomous car.</p><p>Fiat Chrysler is not a major player in driverless car technology, but the automaker apparently wishes to address that weakness via the collaboration. Google's surprise selection of Fiat Chrysler will have industry observers watching for new action in the field by behemoths like General Motors and Toyota.</p><p>Google also is pushing for safety guidelines to help put self-driving cars on the road. It formed an advocacy group with Ford Motor, Uber Technologies and two others April 26 to urge regulators to develop national safety standards.
