<t><p class="indent1">Her prey never departs [alive]. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nahum/3-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>The noise of the [cracking of the] whip, <t><p class="indent1">The noise of the rattling of the wheel, <t><p class="indent1">Galloping horses <t><p class="indent1">And rumbling <i>and</i> bounding chariots [in the assault of Nineveh]! <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nahum/3-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Horsemen charging, <t><p class="indent1">Swords flashing, spears gleaming, <t><p class="indent1">Many slain, a mass of corpses, <t><p class="indent1">No end of corpses-- <t><p class="indent1">The horsemen stumble over the corpses! <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nahum/3-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>All because of the many acts of prostitution of [Nineveh] the prostitute, <t><p class="indent1">The charming <i>and</i> well-favored one, the mistress of sorceries, <t><p class="indent1">Who betrays nations by her acts of prostitution (idolatry) <t><p class="indent1">And families by her sorceries. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nahum/3-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>&#8220;Behold, I am against you,&#8221; declares the LORD of hosts, <p class="indent1stline">&#8220;And I will lift up your skirts over your face, <t><p class="indent1">And I will let the nations look at your nakedness [O Nineveh] <t><p class="indent1">And the kingdoms at your disgrace. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nahum/3-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>&#8220;I will throw filth on you <t><p class="indent1">And make you vile <i>and</i> treat you with contempt, <t><p class="indent1">And set you up as a spectacle. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nahum/3-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>&#8220;And it will come about that all who see you <t><p class="indent1">Will shrink back <i>and</i> run from you and say, <t><p class="indent1">&#8216;Nineveh is completely ruined! <t><p class="indent1">Who will grieve for her?&#8217; <t><p class="indent1">Where will I seek comforters for you?&#8221; <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nahum/3-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Are you better than <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>Thebes, <t><p class="indent1">Which was situated by the waters of the Nile, <t><p class="indent1">With water surrounding her, <t><p class="indent1">Whose defense was the sea (the Nile), <t><p class="indent1">Whose wall <i>consisted</i> of the sea? <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nahum/3-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Ethiopia was her strength, <t><p class="indent1">And Egypt too, without limits. <t><p class="indent1"><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>Put and Lubim were among her helpers. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nahum/3-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Yet she became an exile; <t><p class="indent1">She went into captivity. <t><p class="indent1">Her young children were dashed to pieces <t><p class="indent1">At the head of every street; <t><p class="indent1">They cast lots for her honorable men, <t><p class="indent1">And all her great men were bound with chains. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nahum/3-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>You too [Nineveh] will become drunk [with the cup of God&#8217;s wrath]; <t><p class="indent1">You will be hidden. <t><p class="indent1">You too [Nineveh] will search [in vain] for a refuge from the enemy. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nahum/3-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>All your fortresses are [nothing but] fig trees with ripe figs-- <t><p class="indent1">When shaken they fall into the mouth of the eater. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nahum/3-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Behold, your people are [as weak and helpless as] women in your midst! <t><p class="indent1">The gates of your land are opened wide to your enemies; <t><p class="indent1">Fire consumes the bars across your gates. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nahum/3-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Draw water for a [long, continued] siege! <t><p class="indent1">Strengthen your fortresses! <t><p class="indent1">Go down to the clay pits, trample the mortar! <t><p class="indent1">Prepare the brick kiln [to burn bricks for the rampart]! <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nahum/3-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>But there [in the very midst of these preparations] the fire will devour you; <t><p class="indent1">The sword will cut you down; <t><p class="indent1">It will devour you as the locust does. <t><p class="indent1">Multiply yourself like the creeping locusts; <t><p class="indent1">Multiply yourself like the swarming locusts. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nahum/3-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>You have increased your traders more than the [visible] stars of heaven-- <t><p class="indent1">The creeping locust strips <i>and</i> destroys and then flies away. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nahum/3-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Your guardsmen are like the swarming locusts. <t><p class="indent1">Your marshals are like the hordes of grasshoppers <t><p class="indent1">Settling in the stone walls on a cold day. <t><p class="indent1">When the sun rises, they fly away, <t><p class="indent1">And no one knows the place where they are. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nahum/3-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Your shepherds are asleep, O king of Assyria; <t><p class="indent1">Your nobles are lying down [in death]. <t><p class="indent1">Your people are scattered on the mountains <t><p class="indent1">And there is no one to gather them. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nahum/3-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>There is no relief <i>and</i> healing for your hurt;
