Mbizah is the founder of Wildlife Conservation Action, which advocates for the conservation of biodiversity, and also for the coexistence of humans and wildlife. Moreangels Mbizah opens her keynote by sharing her personal reaction to when Cecil the lion was killed by a trophy hunter. Mbizah outlines how she was heartbroken as she had become attached to the lion, however the death of Cecil shed a global spotlight on the importance of conservation. The death of Cecil brought her to question if the lion would have been killed had the community been invested in conservation efforts. Mbizah states how many of the people involved in conservation efforts are not from the region, however, local communities also hold the most power to protect wildlife. Moreangels Mbizah continues to state the importance of local communities interacting with wildlife. She states that if local communities are not involved in conservation, then outside intervention will not solve the issue, irrespective of scale or resources. Mbizah is the founder of Wildlife Conservation Action, which advocates for the conservation of biodiversity, and also for the coexistence of humans and wildlife. <br /> <br /> Moreangels Mbizah opens her keynote by sharing her personal reaction to when Cecil the lion was killed by a trophy hunter. Mbizah outlines how she was heartbroken as she had become attached to the lion, however the death of Cecil shed a global spotlight on the importance of conservation. <br /> <br /> The death of Cecil brought her to question if the lion would have been killed had the community been invested in conservation efforts. Mbizah states how many of the people involved in conservation efforts are not from the region, however, local communities also hold the most power to protect wildlife. <br /> <br /> Moreangels Mbizah continues to state the importance of local communities interacting with wildlife. She states that if local communities are not involved in conservation, then outside intervention will not solve the issue, irrespective of scale or resources. <br /> <br /> Mbizah concludes her Mbizah is the founder of Wildlife Conservation Action, which advocates for the conservation of biodiversity, and also for the coexistence of humans and wildlife. <br \/>\n<br \/>\nMoreangels Mbizah opens her keynote by sharing her personal reaction to when Cecil the lion was killed by a trophy hunter. Mbizah outlines how she was heartbroken as she had become attached to the lion, however the death of Cecil shed a global spotlight on the importance of conservation. <br \/>\n<br \/>\nThe death of Cecil brought her to question if the lion would have been killed had the community been invested in conservation efforts. Mbizah states how many of the people involved in conservation efforts are not from the region, however, local communities also hold the most power to protect wildlife. <br \/>\n<br \/>\nMoreangels Mbizah continues to state the importance of local communities interacting with wildlife. These are both alarming statements as the material introduces harmful contaminants to our soil, our water, and our food. In the quest of countering the excessive use of plastic, Morgan Vague introduces bacteria as a \u201ccheap, durable, [and] adaptable\u201d way to address pollution on a grand scale. There are a number of benefits to plastic-eating bacteria. For one, these microscopic living things are everywhere \u2014 there is an estimated total of five million trillion trillion, and they are able to survive in extreme and diverse environments. <br \/>\n<br \/>\n<br \/>\nThe talk on plastic-eating bacteria goes on to reveal some of the intricacies of Morgan Vague\u2019s research. Firstly, she collected soil samples from EPA-designated Superfund sites. Her focus was on facilitating \u201ca carbon-free media or a food-free environment\u201d for the microscopic living organisms. To sustain life, the microbiologist introduced the most popular globally produced plastic \u2014 polyethylene terephthalate or, simply, PET. The experiment forces bacteria to adapt and, essentially, begin consuming PET plastic as the only means of nutrition. The speaker briefly dives in to reveal how her subjects process the durable, harmful material. This is done through the lipase enzyme that breaks the PET plastic into small chunks of sugar. <br \/>\n<br \/>\nThe process that Morgan Vague introduces during her talk on plastic-eating bacteria is a completely natural one. The speaker is the CEO of NavAlt Solar and Electric boats. In his brief keynote, he explains in great detail how his firm developed a solution for the largely unsustainable implications of diesel-fueled water transportation. <br \/>\n<br \/>\nA typical ferryboat in Kerala entails pollution and a high operating cost that exceeds revenue. As water transportation is essential to countries like India, the officials launched a challenge that called for the design of a ferryboat that has the capacity of carrying 75 passengers at a time, with 22 trips of 2.5 kilometers per day and an operational timeframe between 7 AM and 7 PM. <br \/>\n<br \/>\nNavAlt Solar and Electric Boats sets off to create a sustainable mode of transportation. Although many thought it was impossible, Sandith Thandasherry's firm prevails. The second half of the talk on eco transportation briefly explains the steps the firm took to create the design of the sustainable boat. For one, lighter materials were used for the body of the vehicle and the weight was reduced by half. Secondly, due to the creation of an underwater shape that is more optimal, the drag was reduced by one third. Finally, a more efficient powertrain was implemented. <br \/>\n<br \/>\nThe ferryboat was tested in November in 2016 and as of today, it has officially been running for 11 months. In addition to these practices being incredibly costly, they're hard on the environment. When people choose embalming and burial for the dead, they're sanitizing the body by replacing the blood with cancerous formaldehyde, and placing them into wooden or metal caskets that use unnecessary resources and prevent bodies from naturally decaying. Cremation, which is generally considered to be more environmentally friendly, uses exponential amounts of gas as well.<br \/>\n<br \/>\nAs these methods are not sustainable, Doughty has joined to help the many others who wish to adapt Western burial practices to be less harmful to the environment. One alternative is composting, which allows the body to be reduced to soil in about six weeks time. At this point, the body is transformed into molecules that can then be used to create new life. Conservation cemeteries, Doughty says, are an eco-friendly alternative to traditional grave sites. The speaker is a professor, a millennial computer scientist, a book author and a person who has no social media accounts. On the basis of his experience, Cal Newport informs that not being connected through these digital platforms does not necessarily have a negative impact on one's quality of life. In fact, it makes a person happier, far more productive and successful professionally. <br \/>\n<br \/>\nThe talk on social media revolves around Newport's vision of the future, where fewer people use the services offered by platforms like Facebook and Instagram. In order to advocate for the mindful merit behind the abolition of social media accounts, the speaker takes a look at the three main objections against it. <br \/>\n<br \/>\nThe first ground for defending social media use is the fact that it is \"the fundamental technology of the 21st century.\" However, Cal Newport argues that there is a fallacy in ascribing this quality to channels of communication. Social media is not a fundamental technology but it rather leverages fundamental technology to entertain, mine and sell personal data. Therefore, rejecting social media is essentially substituting one type of entertainment for another. <br \/>\n<br \/>\nThe second objection is that without social media, it is impossible to thrive in the 21st-century economy. Cal Newport counters that it is absolutely possible to do so, because what the market values is the ability to produce unique, useful and high-quality objects and services, while it dismisses replicated activities. Social media enables the latter. <br \/>\n<br \/>\nThe final objection the speaker addresses during his talk on social media is the fact that digital platforms of this nature are genuinely fun and do not actually cause substantial harm. However, Newport offers a compelling amount of information that ties the emergence of social media use to the onset of higher levels of anxiety and loss of attention span. She recently delivered a talk about methods to exponential eliminate child pornography from the web, an issue that is only continuing to grow online with \"more than 45 million images and videos of child sexual abuse material [being] reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children\" in 2018 -- double the amount from the year prior. <br \/>\n<br \/>\nCordua points out that abusers have quickly capitalized on new technologies to exploit children, however, law enforcement is not yet up to speed to catch these criminals. Thankfully, Thorn created a technology that uses the \"hash\" -- a string of unique numbers based on the content's coding -- of this horrific content. This allows law enforcement or companies that host content to remove the image or video from their platform without having to look through it individually. <br \/>\n<br \/>\nThe issue, however, is that the hashes are sitting isolated from each other in databases around the world. Moreover, law enforcements don't know if these videos \"represent children who have already been rescued or need to be identified still.\" Thorn's technology -- which for obvious reasons is top secret -- allows officers to be instantly notified when a sexually explicit content of a new child is posted online. The man-made chemical was used for refrigerators, as well as aerosol spray cans. However, it wasn't until later that scientists realized the dire environmental impact of CFCs -- the Antarctic Ozone Hole was discovered in 1985 and half a decade later it became public knowledge that more than a third of the ozone layer was missing. <br \/>\n<br \/>\nTo get his point across, Sean Davis reminds the audience of the importance of the ozone layer which blocks 90% of harmful UV radiation from the sun. Hence, \"a threat to the ozone layer is a threat to human safety.\" <br \/>\n<br \/>\nThe talk on global warming goes on to highlight a \"rare environmental success story\" that the climate scientist uses as a case study to push positive action forward. The Montreal Protocol from President Reagan plays a big part in avoiding the environmental catastrophe that CFC might have caused. Not only has the protocol contributed to the healing of the ozone layer, but it has also \"delayed global warming by more than a decade.\" <br \/>\n<br \/>\nSean Davis believes that by referencing this case, we can \"find guidance for the choices we make today.\" The talk on global warming goes on to stipulate some good practices when taking action to contradict rapid climate change and contribute to the health of our planet. For one, \"we don't need absolute certainty to act\" and in fact, using uncertainties to counter environmentally conscious action is just a distraction. Secondly, we need all hands on deck from all levels of the individual and international spectrum. The architect was a cofounder of PLOT Architects in 2001, and founded the BIG-Bjarke Ingles Group in 2005. <br \/>\n<br \/>\nIngles initially discusses how his organization was hired by the Dubai Future Foundation to design a city to sustain humans living on Mars. He later outlines that under optimal conditions the journey to Mars can take as little as three months. <br \/>\n<br \/>\nBjarke Ingles moves on to question why can't people take lessons from earth and apply it to how people will live on mars? Ingles provides an example in Tunisia where people live in structures carved into the rock, which protects people from the heat and cold of a desert climate. <br \/>\n<br \/>\nLastly, Ingles concludes his keynote by outlining the process that could be implemented to transform Mars into an environment that could sustain human life. He states that it will be necessary to merge the ecosystems of earth and Mars to create a new system.
