cross-platform, real-time strategy game <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20180926052050/http://wildfiregames.com/0ad/" rel="external">0 A.D.</a> to open source. Previously, the software was available as freeware under a closed-source model. The game's code is now being released under the <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20180926052050/http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-2.0.html" rel="external">GNU General Public License version 2</a> (GPLv2) and the art, music and sound content in the game is being made available under the <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20180926052050/http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/" rel="external">CC-BY-SA</a> Creative Commons License. </p> <p>The <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20180926052050/http://os.wildfiregames.com/" rel="external">developers' goal</a> is to attract new developers to participate in the project by lowering "the barriers to entry". The historically-based game is similar to Microsoft's <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20180926052050/http://www.microsoft.com/games/empires/" rel="external">Age of Empires</a>, in that users create and build civilisations and must defend them against their enemies. The game focuses on the years <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20180926052050/http://wildfiregames.com/0ad/page.php?c=46" rel="external">500 B.C. to 500 A.D.</a>, includes six unique civilisations and several multi-player modes. </p> <p>The game itself has already been in production for 8 years and is still considered to be at a <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20180926052050/http://wildfiregames.com/0ad/page.php?p=1696#What%20is%20the%20game's%20current%20stage%20of%20development?" rel="external">pre-alpha stage</a>.
