With offices closed and employees working remotely, she didn’t have the usual chances to meet, get to know, and network with her new colleagues. Without “water cooler moments,” as Quiroz puts it, “it can be challenging to get to know others,” especially those outside of her team. To give herself more opportunities to build camaraderie, Quiroz joined Women@Audible, one of several employee-led impact groups that facilitate mentorship, professional networking, and belonging at Audible.

Through the group, Quiroz was set up to meet female employees around the globe for virtual, casual coffee chats as part of an initiative Women@Audible kicked off at the start of the pandemic to help keep employees connected. Called “Let’s Be Friends,” the meet-ups were centered around icebreaker questions inspired by the Audible Original podcast Freunde sein?, released in Germany. Sibylle Schwarz, who works in Audible’s Berlin office and spent several years as co-lead for the EU chapter of Women@Audible, helped conceive the idea. “We wanted to create something that brings back the ability to just meet a random person and find out together common topics that make you both tick,” she says.

The enthusiasm for the program has spawned others like it, always with an eye toward global accessibility. Parris Brown, who works on Audible’s customer service team and heads up Women@Audible’s events committee, organized a “Meet Me Mixer” that different locations could take turns hosting in order to help manage the differing time zones. During the initial mixer, Brown says, everyone decided they’d need to make the event longer, that it was so refreshing to talk about life with colleagues they’d never met, or who lived half a world away.

Along with the opportunity to connect and network, providing mentorship is one of Women@Audible’s core goals, and Brown found her own mentor thanks to an event the group organized around the Audible Original By Sophia Chang, The Baddest Bitch In the Room. Chang “was speaking about the mentors in her life and how everyone should have someone they can identify with and who advocates for them,” says Brown, who then raised her hand and asked how she could find a mentor of her own. As it happens, a senior vice president who was present volunteered on the spot. The two connected regularly, discussing the personal and professional. “We have built a friendship that I suspect will be long-term,” says Brown. “I also learned that she is just as human, even being in a very senior role, and that we all have to find our strengths and hone those skills.”

There are multiple chapters of Women@Audible in the cities we operate in worldwide, with more than 20% of global employees involved. Women@ members are often active with other impact groups as well, including Moms@Audible, Women in Tech (WiT), Black Employee Network (BEN), AudiblePRIDE, and UNIDOS. The group joins forces frequently with WiT and Moms@Audible to organize panels, workshops, and public events throughout the year, especially during Women’s History Month, and together they work with Audible’s editorial teams in each marketplace to curate content that highlights women’s stories and voices. The groups have also been key advisors on promoting Audible initiatives that affect women the most, such as the range of supports the company offers employees to help with caregiving, or the “Next Chapter” Returnship Program that helps professionals return to the workforce after time away to raise families or care for a relative.

“We are working intentionally to improve representation and growth opportunities for women at all levels of the company worldwide,” says Susan Jurevics, Audible’s EVP, Head of International and the executive sponsor for Women@Audible. “Making Audible a place where women can thrive at every stage in their career and personal life is a responsibility I am personally very invested in.”

Women@Audible engages with our local communities as well. The UK chapter created a program with The Girls Network in which 12 volunteer mentors were paired to work one-on-one with young women from under-resourced backgrounds. Over the course of a year, the pairs will focus on building confidence, learning new skills, and meeting more female role models. In the US, Women@Audible coached 22 students on how to adapt their group written-novel, Daughters of the Community, into an audio production as part of a pilot program created in collaboration with Audible’s Global Center for Urban Development (GCUD) and the Newark nonprofit International Girls Academy.

“This workshop not only helped introduce these students to new opportunities, like we strive to do for our own members,” says Monica Tirri, co-lead of Women@Audible and a member of the corporate communications team, “but it also drove forward our impact group’s mission in elevating women’s stories and lived experiences.”

Quiroz says the mixers and coffee chats have helped her keep up her friendship with colleagues, admitting to “geeking out” to whatever they’re listening to, reading, and watching. “It’s helped me to feel much more connected to the wider Audible team,” she reports. “Getting to meet so many friendly, interesting, and supportive people makes working from my little Brooklyn apartment all the better. I appreciate how Women@Audible has created a space for those connections and conversations.”

Related

Highlights

HighlightsFebruary 25, 2022
Triumphs and Creativity at the Center of this Month’s Black History Events

This year, Black History Month was filled with events for employees and listeners celebrating the full range of Black life. With offices closed and employees working remotely, she didn’t have the usual chances to meet, get to know, and network with her new colleagues. Without “water cooler moments,” as Quiroz puts it, “it can be challenging to get to know others,” especially those outside of her team. To give herself more opportunities to build camaraderie, Quiroz joined Women@Audible, one of several [employee-led impact groups]( https://www.audiblecareers.com/spectrum-and-belonging) that facilitate mentorship, professional networking, and belonging at Audible. \n\nThrough the group, Quiroz was set up to meet female employees around the globe for virtual, casual coffee chats as part of an initiative Women@Audible kicked off at the start of the pandemic to help keep employees connected. Called “Let’s Be Friends,” the meet-ups were centered around icebreaker questions inspired by the Audible Original podcast [*Freunde sein?*]( https://www.audible.com/?ref=Adbl_ip_rdr_from_DE\u0026source_code=AUDGBHP0923159F0F\u0026ipRedirectFrom=DE\u0026ipRedirectOriginalURL=pd%2FFreunde-sein-Wenn-zwei-sich-treffen-Staffel-2-Original-Podcast-Hoerbuch%2FB07ZFDPMHT%3Fqid%3D1644414400%26sr%3D1-1%26ref%3Da_search_c3_lProduct_1_1%26pf_rd_p%3De54013e2-074a-460e-861f-7feac676b789%26pf_rd_r%3DMMXT3R2QZ9BQ100R8932), released in Germany. Sibylle Schwarz, who works in Audible’s Berlin office and spent several years as co-lead for the EU chapter of Women@Audible, helped conceive the idea. “We wanted to create something that brings back the ability to just meet a random person and find out together common topics that make you both tick,” she says.\n\nThe enthusiasm for the program has spawned others like it, always with an eye toward global accessibility. \n\nAlong with the opportunity to connect and network, providing mentorship is one of Women@Audible’s core goals, and Brown found her own mentor thanks to an event the group organized around the Audible Original By Sophia Chang, [*The Baddest Bitch In the Room*]( https://www.audible.com/pd/The-Baddest-Bitch-in-the-Room-Audiobook/B07TVKM94R). “I also learned that she is just as human, even being in a very senior role, and that we all have to find our strengths and hone those skills.”\n\nThere are multiple chapters of Women@Audible in the cities we operate in worldwide, with more than 20% of global employees involved. Women@ members are often active with other impact groups as well, including Moms@Audible, Women in Tech (WiT), Black Employee Network (BEN), AudiblePRIDE, and UNIDOS. The group joins forces frequently with WiT and Moms@Audible to organize panels, workshops, and public events throughout the year, especially during Women’s History Month, and together they work with Audible’s editorial teams in each marketplace to [curate content]( https://www.audible.com/ep/womens-history-audiobooks) that highlights women’s stories and voices. The groups have also been key advisors on promoting Audible initiatives that affect women the most, such as the range of supports the company offers employees to [help with caregiving]( https://www.audible.com/about/newsroom/caring-for-our-employees-by-helping-them-care-for-their-families), or the “Next Chapter” [Returnship Program]( https://www.audible.com/about/newsroom/they-paused-careers-for-caregiving-now-their-journeys-resume-at-audible) that helps professionals return to the workforce after time away to raise families or care for a relative. \n\n“We are working intentionally to improve representation and growth opportunities for women at all levels of the company worldwide,” says Susan Jurevics, Audible’s EVP, Head of International and the executive sponsor for Women@Audible. “Making Audible a place where women can thrive at every stage in their career and personal life is a responsibility I am personally very invested in.”\n\nWomen@Audible engages with our local communities as well. The UK chapter created a program with The Girls Network in which 12 volunteer mentors were paired to work one-on-one with young women from under-resourced backgrounds. Over the course of a year, the pairs will focus on building confidence, learning new skills, and meeting more female role models. In the US, Women@Audible coached 22 students on how to adapt their group written-novel, Daughters of the Community, into an audio production as part of a pilot program created in collaboration with Audible’s [Global Center for Urban Development (GCUD)]( https://www.audible.com/about/impact) and the Newark nonprofit International Girls Academy. \n\n“This workshop not only helped introduce these students to new opportunities, like we strive to do for our own members,” says Monica Tirri, co-lead of Women@Audible and a member of the corporate communications team, “but it also drove forward our impact group’s mission in elevating women’s stories and lived experiences.”\n\nQuiroz says the mixers and coffee chats have helped her keep up her friendship with colleagues, admitting to “geeking out” to whatever they’re listening to, reading, and watching. “It’s helped me to feel much more connected to the wider Audible team,” she reports. “Getting to meet so many friendly, interesting, and supportive people makes working from my little Brooklyn apartment all the better. I appreciate how Women@Audible has created a space for those connections and conversations.”\n"}}],"related":[{"metadata":{"tags":[],"concepts":[]},"sys":{"space":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Space","id":"3sa0209epr53"}},"id":"2WqCygDypsUIrhCljKlvhC","type":"Entry","createdAt":"2022-02-25T16:21:48.136Z","updatedAt":"2023-09-27T13:01:14.864Z","environment":{"sys":{"id":"master","type":"Link","linkType":"Environment"}},"publishedVersion":16,"revision":2,"contentType":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"ContentType","id":"newsPost"}},"locale":"en-US"},"fields":{"title":"Triumphs and Creativity at the Center of this Month’s Black History Events","slug":"triumphs-and-creativity-at-the-center-of-this-months-black-history-events","seo":{"metadata":{"tags":[],"concepts":[]},"sys":{"space":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Space","id":"3sa0209epr53"}},"id":"7deb6O19QvIuh3i1JAyteA","type":"Entry","createdAt":"2022-02-25T16:21:30.194Z","updatedAt":"2022-02-25T16:21:30.194Z","environment":{"sys":{"id":"master","type":"Link","linkType":"Environment"}},"publishedVersion":4,"revision":1,"contentType":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"ContentType","id":"pageSeo"}},"locale":"en-US"},"fields":{"pageTitle":"Triumphs and Creativity at the Center of this Month’s Black History Events","pageDescription":"This year, Black History Month was filled with events for employees and listeners celebrating the full range of Black life. Now Aimunmondion just had to come up with a good subject. She decided to use the opportunity to learn more about her Nigerian roots, delving into Nigeria’s rich history, political struggles, and civil war. She invited her grandfather to share his experience and discuss how the country’s turbulent past has affected its present, and what can be done to create a brighter future. The resulting podcast, *Breaking Dawn*, which Aimunmondian presented at the end of her internship, is informative and engrossing, melding documentary and memoir through Nigerian music and voices.\n\nIn spite of having to schedule interviews across time zones and editing so much her fingers cramped up, Aimunmondion says that the hours spent researching Nigeria’s history and talking with her grandfather made it all worthwhile. “It taught me a lot about the history of my country,” she said. \n\nAudible’s paid internship for [Newark high school students](https://www.audible.com/about/impact/future-leaders) has been offered for 14 years as part of the company’s mission to cultivate the city’s next generation of leaders. In October 2020, Audible piloted a new program within the internship, teaching a remote 12-week podcasting masterclass to a small group of students from Newark’s North Star Academy, including Aimunmondion. \n\nThe addition of a podcasting masterclass exposes interns to another of Audible’s core missions, which is to create a [diverse talent pipeline](https://www.audible.com/about/impact/amplify-voices) for creatives of all types in the audio industry. This effort includes providing workshops, training, and mentoring in acting and writing as well as sound engineering and production in the US, the UK, Australia, and Germany.\n\nEquipped with gear from Audible Studios, the interns took part in employee-led tutorials that focused on different aspects of the process, from pitching an idea to writing, editing, and recording, through post-production, marketing, and promotion. Rebecca Takyi, an intern on the content team, knew she wanted her podcast to be about the arts. Brainstorming with mentor Emilia LaPenta, a senior producer for Audible Theater, she decided to bring in her older sister for a deep-dive into the legacy of artists across generations and the importance of exploring music beyond one’s generational scope. In *Naming Greatness*, the multi-generational siblings discussed the cultural, political, and artistic impact of icons from different decades, from Nina Simone and Aretha Franklin to Lauryn Hill and Mariah Carey to Beyoncé.\n\n“The process was very long, but fun,” Takyi told her peers and instructors. “The outcome was phenomenal. I was proud of myself.” \n\nLaPenta points out that, just as the students benefit from the opportunity to learn audio storytelling, the landscape itself benefits from their ideas and voices. “They came to the program with fresh insights and imaginative concepts, pushing the form forward with their unique perspectives and innovations,” she says. \n\nMental health was the subject of more than one podcast. Michael Torto, also an intern on the content team, explored mental health in the face of racial injustice and Covid-19. For *Our Voices, Our Story, Our Experience*, he invited a fellow North Star student to discuss coping with the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor against the backdrop of the pandemic, and how it may be affecting the mental health of younger generations. \n\nSimilarly, Edna Agyemang brought in a friend for her podcast, *It Had To Be Said*, to discuss mental health in the context of the dangers of beauty standards. The result is a high-energy, conversational deep dive into colorism, “pretty privilege,” and the influencer culture encountered on digital platforms like TikTok. Agyemang reported that the editing process helped her get over the discomfort of hearing herself in a recording.\n\nEven though she wasn’t a podcast listener before, Aimunmondion is already planning future episodes of *Breaking Dawn*. Dave Blum, editor-in-chief of Audible Originals, is glad to hear that. “I really hope you keep doing this,” he told the group during their final meeting. “We need you in the audio space.” \n"}}]}},{"metadata":{"tags":[],"concepts":[]},"sys":{"space":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Space","id":"3sa0209epr53"}},"id":"2cliqn3jxXwzkfPbKqA2X4","type":"Entry","createdAt":"2022-02-24T01:31:26.529Z","updatedAt":"2023-09-27T13:01:13.969Z","environment":{"sys":{"id":"master","type":"Link","linkType":"Environment"}},"publishedVersion":30,"revision":3,"contentType":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"ContentType","id":"newsPost"}},"locale":"en-US"},"fields":{"title":"Abby West Works to Amplify Stories from Across the Human Spectrum","slug":"abby-west-works-to-amplify-stories-from-across-the-human-spectrum","seo":{"metadata":{"tags":[],"concepts":[]},"sys":{"space":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"Space","id":"3sa0209epr53"}},"id":"2ipRIWmaG7xcaYPUCRP4yr","type":"Entry","createdAt":"2022-02-18T22:12:36.607Z","updatedAt":"2022-02-24T01:24:37.615Z","environment":{"sys":{"id":"master","type":"Link","linkType":"Environment"}},"publishedVersion":5,"revision":2,"contentType":{"sys":{"type":"Link","linkType":"ContentType","id":"pageSeo"}},"locale":"en-US"},"fields":{"pageTitle":"Abby West Works to Amplify Stories from Across the Human Spectrum ","pageDescription":"After a career in journalism, Abby West now focuses on storytelling for Audible. And it can be as intangible as understanding how intimate a format this is, being processed in a different way, inciting imagination in a wholly different way than the written word. There’s a lot of thought and care put into the [People Principles](https://www.audible.com/about/people-principles), so we have an understanding of what this company stands for and what it encourages employees to do for each other and the communities we live in and serve.
