The name Arioch is believed to be of Akkadian origin, meaning "servant of the moon god," which reflects the cultural and religious influences of the regions mentioned in the biblical accounts.

1. Arioch, King of Ellasar: Arioch is first mentioned in the Book of Genesis as a king who participated in a coalition of four kings led by Chedorlaomer, king of Elam. This coalition waged war against five kings in the region of the Dead Sea, including the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah. The account is found in Genesis 14:1-9:

"In those days Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goiim went to war against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar). All these latter kings joined forces in the Valley of Siddim (that is, the Salt Sea). For twelve years they had been subject to Chedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled."

Arioch's role in this narrative highlights the geopolitical dynamics of the ancient Near East, where city-states and regional powers often formed alliances for military campaigns. The coalition's campaign ultimately led to the capture of Lot, Abram's nephew, prompting Abram to mount a successful rescue operation.

2. Arioch, Captain of the Guard: The second mention of Arioch is found in the Book of Daniel, where he serves as the captain of the guard for King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. In Daniel 2, King Nebuchadnezzar has a troubling dream and demands that his wise men not only interpret the dream but also recount it without being told its content. When the wise men fail to meet this demand, the king orders their execution. Arioch is tasked with carrying out this decree:

"Then the king issued a decree to summon the wise men of Babylon to explain the dream to him. When they came and stood before the king, he said to them, 'I have had a dream, and my spirit is anxious to understand it.' The astrologers answered the king in Aramaic, 'O king, live forever! Tell your servants the dream, and we will give the interpretation.' The king replied to the astrologers, 'This is my decision: If you do not tell me the dream and its interpretation, you will be cut into pieces, and your houses will be reduced to rubble.'" (Daniel 2:2-5)

Arioch's involvement becomes crucial when Daniel, a young Hebrew captive, requests time to seek God's revelation of the dream. Arioch facilitates Daniel's audience with the king, demonstrating a level of respect and cooperation with Daniel. Daniel's successful interpretation of the dream leads to his promotion and the sparing of the wise men, including Arioch.

In both instances, Arioch is depicted as a figure of authority and action, involved in significant events that reflect the broader themes of divine providence and the unfolding of God's plan in history. The accounts of Arioch serve to illustrate the interplay between human authority and divine intervention, as well as the faithfulness of God's servants in challenging circumstances.
Hitchcock's Bible Names Dictionary
Arioch
long; great; tall
Smith's Bible Dictionary
Arioch
(venerable).

The king of Eliasar, one of the allies of Chedorlaomer in his expedition against his rebellious tributaries. In Genesis 14:1, 9, where the names of the allied kings who marched against the Cities of the Plain are given, that of Arioch follows his more immediate suzerain, Amraphel, and not Chedorlaomer, who, however, appears to have been the real overlord (verse 4), which agrees with the indications of the Bah records. No details of the expedition are available from Babylonian sources. Besides Larsa, Eri-Aku's inscriptions inform us that Ur (Muqayyar, Mugheir) was in the principality of which Larsa was the capital.

(2) The Arioch of Daniel 2:14, 25 was captain of the bodyguard of King Nebuchadnezzar.
