Therefore, the inhabitants of the earth are burned [under the curse of God’s wrath], and few people are left. <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/24-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>The new wine mourns, <t><p class="indent1">The vine decays; <t><p class="indent1">All the merry-hearted sigh <i>and</i> groan. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/24-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>The mirth of the timbrels (tambourines) ceases, <t><p class="indent1">The noise of those who rejoice ends, <t><p class="indent1">The joy of the harp ceases. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/24-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>They do not drink wine with a song; <t><p class="indent1">Strong drink is bitter to those who drink it. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/24-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>The city of chaos is broken down; <t><p class="indent1">Every house is shut up so that no one may enter. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/24-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>There is an outcry in the streets concerning the wine; <t><p class="indent1">All jubilation is darkened, <t><p class="indent1">The joy of the earth is banished. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/24-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Horrible desolation is left in the city, <t><p class="indent1">And the gate is battered into ruins. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/24-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>For so it will be in the midst of the earth among the peoples, <t><p class="indent1">As the shaking of an olive tree, <t><p class="indent1">As the gleanings when the grape harvest is over [and only a little of the fruit remains]. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/24-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>They [who have escaped and remain] raise their voices, they shout for joy; <t><p class="indent1">They rejoice from the [Mediterranean] Sea in the majesty of the LORD. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/24-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Therefore honor <i>and</i> glorify the LORD in the east [in the region of light], <t><p class="indent1">The name of the LORD, the God of Israel [honor His name], <t><p class="indent1">In the coastlands <i>and</i> islands of the [Mediterranean] Sea. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/24-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>From the ends of the earth we hear songs, “Glory <i>and</i> honor to the Righteous One,” <t><p class="indent1">But I say, “I waste away, I waste away. Woe to me! <t><p class="indent1">The treacherous deal treacherously, <t><p class="indent1">Indeed, the treacherous deal very treacherously.” <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/24-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Terror and pit [of destruction] and snare <t><p class="indent1">Confront you, O inhabitant of the earth. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/24-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Then it will be that he who flees at the sound of terror will fall into the pit, <t><p class="indent1">And he who comes up out of the pit will be caught in the snare; <t><p class="indent1">For the windows of heaven are opened, and the foundations of the earth tremble. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/24-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>The earth is broken completely apart, <t><p class="indent1">The earth is split apart, <t><p class="indent1">The earth is shaken violently. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/24-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>The earth reels back and forth like a drunkard <t><p class="indent1">And sways like a shack; <t><p class="indent1">Its transgression lies heavily upon it, <t><p class="indent1">And it will fall and not rise again. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/24-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>So it will happen in that day <t><p class="indent1">That the LORD will visit <i>and</i> punish the host (fallen angels) of heaven on high, <t><p class="indent1">And the kings of the earth on the earth. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/24-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>They will be gathered together <t><p class="indent1">As prisoners [are gathered] in a dungeon; <t><p class="indent1">They will be shut up in prison, <t><p class="indent1">And after many days they will be visited <i>and</i> punished. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/isaiah/24-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Then the full moon will be embarrassed and the sun ashamed, <t><p class="indent1">For the LORD of hosts will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, <t><p class="indent1">And <i>His</i> glory <i>and</i> brilliance will shine before His elders.<A name="fn"></a></p><br /><br /><span class="footnotesbot">[a]</span> <span class="fnverse">1</span> The gradual destruction of the earth, as revealed by God to Isaiah, is prophesied in this passage.
