<A name="8"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>they answer'd him, because we are not hired; go work then, said he, in my vineyard, and I will give you what's reasonable.<p> <A name="9"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>so when even was come, the master of the vineyard said to his steward, call the labourers, and give them their hire, beginning from the last to the first. <A name="10"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>they then that were hired about the eleventh hour, came and received every man his penny. <A name="11"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>last of all they came who were hired first, expecting to have received more, but they had only a penny a man, <A name="12"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>who upon the receipt of it fell a murmuring against the master, and cry'd, <A name="13"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>these last have work'd but an hour, and you put them upon the level with us, who have born the whole fatigue and heat of the day. <A name="14"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>but he answered one of them, friend, I do thee no wrong: did not you agree for a penny a day? because I am bountiful, are you invidious? <A name="17"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>thus the last shall be first, and the first last: for though many are invited, few have precedence.<p> <A name="18"></a><p class="hdg">The Third Prediction of the Passion<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/10.htm#32">Mark 10:32–34</a>; <a href ="../luke/18.htm#31">Luke 18:31–34</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>As Jesus was on the way to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples in private, and said to them, <A name="19"></a><span class="red"><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>we are now going to Jerusalem, where the son of man will be betrayed to the chief priests, and to the Scribes, who will condemn him to die, <A name="20"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>and deliver him up to the Gentiles, to be insulted, scourged, and crucified: but the third day he shall rise again.<p> <A name="21"></a><p class="hdg">A Mother’s Request<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/10.htm#35">Mark 10:35–45</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Then the mother of Zebedee's children, with her two sons, came and threw herself at his feet, desiring a favour of him. <A name="22"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>and he said to her, what would you have? grant, said she, when you are upon the throne, that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left. <A name="23"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>but Jesus answered them, ye know not what ye ask, can ye bear to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? they said to him, we can. <A name="24"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>he replied, ye shall indeed drink of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, I cannot grant to any but those whom my father has destin'd thereto.<p> <A name="25"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>upon hearing this, the other ten disciples were moved with indignation against the two brothers. <A name="26"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>but Jesus calling them to him, said, ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise arbitrary dominion over them, and they that are great exercise their authority. <A name="27"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>but it must not be so among you: on the contrary, whoever would rise among you, let him be your minister. <A name="28"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>and whoever would be chief among you, let him be your servant. <A name="29"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>as the son of man came not to be ministred unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for all.<p> <A name="30"></a><p class="hdg">The Blind Men by the Road<br /><span class="cross">(<a href ="../mark/10.htm#46">Mark 10:46–52</a>; <a href ="../luke/18.htm#35">Luke 18:35–43</a>)</span><p><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>At their departure from Jericho, a great multitude followed him. <A name="31"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>and there were two blind men sitting by the way-side, who hearing that Jesus was passing by, cried out, "have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David." <A name="32"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>and the people reprimanded them, to make them hold their tongue: but they bawl'd out the more, have mercy on us, O Lord, thou son of David. <A name="33"></a><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/20-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>then Jesus stood still, and calling them, said, what would ye have me do for you?
