This phrase reflects the human limitation in comprehending divine mysteries. It echoes similar sentiments found in other prophetic books, such as Ezekiel and Revelation, where the prophets also struggled to grasp the full meaning of their visions. The phrase highlights the distinction between divine knowledge and human understanding, emphasizing the need for divine revelation to interpret God's plans.<p><b>So I asked, “My lord, what will be the outcome of these things?”</b><br>Daniel's inquiry demonstrates a desire for clarity and understanding of the future events revealed to him. The term "my lord" indicates respect and recognition of the authority of the angelic messenger, likely Gabriel, who had been sent to explain the vision. This question is rooted in the prophetic tradition of seeking insight into God's plans for His people, similar to inquiries made by other prophets like Habakkuk. The phrase points to the eschatological focus of Daniel's visions, which concern the end times and the ultimate triumph of God's kingdom. It also reflects a common theme in apocalyptic literature, where the faithful seek assurance and understanding of God's ultimate purposes amidst present uncertainties.<div class="vheading2">Persons / Places / Events</div>1. <b><a href="/topical/d/daniel.htm">Daniel</a></b><br>A prophet and a key figure in the Old Testament, known for his faithfulness to God and his ability to interpret dreams and visions. These variations seem due to glosses and paraphrase. Theodotion is in complete agreement with the Massoretic text. The Peshitta differs only by inserting "Daniel." The Vulgate renders the last clause, <span class="accented">Quid erit post haec?</span> "What will be after these things?" Daniel understood the words, but by hypothesis he did not understand the meaning of them. This exhibits the relation of the prophet always to the revelations given - his faculty of understanding was totally independent of the receptive faculty by which he received the revelation. If we assume this as representing a fact, then all arguments which are grounded on the meanings which the prophet himself might see in his words are beside the question. Since he does not understand, he appeals to the angelic messenger, who had declared so much. <span class="p"><br /><br /></span><span class="versiontext"><a href="/commentaries/daniel/12-8.htm">Parallel Commentaries ...</a></span><span class="p"><br /><br /><br /></span><a name="lexicon" id="lexicon"></a><div class="vheading">Hebrew</div><span class="word">I</span><br /><span class="heb">וַאֲנִ֥י</span> <span class="translit">(wa·’ă·nî)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Pronoun - first person common singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_589.htm">Strong's 589: </a> </span><span class="str2">I</span><br /><br /><span class="word">heard,</span><br /><span class="heb">שָׁמַ֖עְתִּי</span> <span class="translit">(šā·ma‘·tî)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Qal - Perfect - first person common singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_8085.htm">Strong's 8085: </a> </span><span class="str2">To hear intelligently</span><br /><br /><span class="word">but I did not</span><br /><span class="heb">וְלֹ֣א</span> <span class="translit">(wə·lō)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Adverb - Negative particle<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_3808.htm">Strong's 3808: </a> </span><span class="str2">Not, no</span><br /><br /><span class="word">understand.</span><br /><span class="heb">אָבִ֑ין</span> <span class="translit">(’ā·ḇîn)</span><br /><span class="parse">Verb - Qal - Imperfect - first person common singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_995.htm">Strong's 995: </a> </span><span class="str2">To separate mentally, understand</span><br /><br /><span class="word">So I asked,</span><br /><span class="heb">וָאֹ֣מְרָ֔ה</span> <span class="translit">(wā·’ō·mə·rāh)</span><br /><span class="parse">Conjunctive waw | Verb - Qal - Consecutive imperfect - first person common singular | third person feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_559.htm">Strong's 559: </a> </span><span class="str2">To utter, say</span><br /><br /><span class="word">“My lord,</span><br /><span class="heb">אֲדֹנִ֕י</span> <span class="translit">(’ă·ḏō·nî)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - masculine singular construct | first person common singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_113.htm">Strong's 113: </a> </span><span class="str2">Sovereign, controller</span><br /><br /><span class="word">what</span><br /><span class="heb">מָ֥ה</span> <span class="translit">(māh)</span><br /><span class="parse">Interrogative<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_4100.htm">Strong's 4100: </a> </span><span class="str2">What?, what!, indefinitely what</span><br /><br /><span class="word">will be the outcome</span><br /><span class="heb">אַחֲרִ֖ית</span> <span class="translit">(’a·ḥă·rîṯ)</span><br /><span class="parse">Noun - feminine singular<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_319.htm">Strong's 319: </a> </span><span class="str2">The last, end, the future, posterity</span><br /><br /><span class="word">of these [things]?”</span><br /><span class="heb">אֵֽלֶּה׃</span> <span class="translit">(’êl·leh)</span><br /><span class="parse">Pronoun - common plural<br /></span><span class="str"><a href="/hebrew/strongs_428.htm">Strong's 428: </a> </span><span class="str2">These, those</span><br /><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><div class="vheading">Links</div><a href="/niv/daniel/12-8.htm">Daniel 12:8 NIV</a><br /><a href="/nlt/daniel/12-8.htm">Daniel 12:8 NLT</a><br /><a href="/esv/daniel/12-8.htm">Daniel 12:8 ESV</a><br /><a href="/nasb/daniel/12-8.htm">Daniel 12:8 NASB</a><br /><a href="/kjv/daniel/12-8.htm">Daniel 12:8 KJV</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="//bibleapps.com/daniel/12-8.htm">Daniel 12:8 BibleApps.com</a><br /><a href="//bibliaparalela.com/daniel/12-8.htm">Daniel 12:8 Biblia Paralela</a><br /><a href="//holybible.com.cn/daniel/12-8.htm">Daniel 12:8 Chinese Bible</a><br /><a href="//saintebible.com/daniel/12-8.htm">Daniel 12:8 French Bible</a><br /><a href="/catholic/daniel/12-8.htm">Daniel 12:8 Catholic Bible</a><span class="p"><br /><br /></span><a href="/daniel/12-8.htm">OT Prophets: Daniel 12:8 I heard but I didn't understand: then (Dan.
