Raw from a bootstrapping company on a shoestring budget to the thriving company it is today. Grand prize winner at the 2018 WeWork Creator Awards, hosted and judged by Kutcher, Benedetto credits the $360,000 prize money for giving Queen of Raw the last boost to make it to launch.</p> <p>On a mission to solve the world’s water crisis, Benedetto’s Queen of Raw is a platform for businesses to recapture value from their wasted materials instead of burning them or sending them to a landfill. The company matches buyers with sellers to quickly sell discarded raw materials at affordable prices, giving people access to materials they didn’t have before.</p> <p>So, how does this solve the water crisis? Each scrap of wasted material contributes to water waste—more than 700 gallons of water is needed to produce just one tee shirt. Since Queen of Raw’s launch, the company has enabled businesses to sell more than $120 billion dollars’ worth of excess fabric. Without meaningful and overall change in the textile industry, two-thirds of the entire world’s population will face shortages of freshwater from the textile industry alone. Most medical professionals wear some sort of badge reel attached to their collar or belt to house their credentials. Hermann’s technology replaces that reel with one that has embedded Bluetooth technology to communicate with sensors at handwashing stations in patient care areas. If a clinician walks in or out of a patient’s room, the sensors detect the movement. Then the clinician has a certain number of seconds to dispense the sanitizer or soap. If not, a voice reminder says, “Please sanitize.” </p> <p>Those two words have been revolutionary. In the ten most recent hospital installations, data was gathered for six months, showing a decrease in HAIs by more than 60%. The third in her burgeoning epicurean empire, Koh is also the owner of Chupitos, Singapore's first and only shooters bar. Next she opened The Beast Southern Kitchen and Bourbon Bar, featuring southern classics, including fried chicken and waffles and a range of bourbons. But launching the Brass Lion Distillery was different. Koh spent six years apprenticing in distilleries in North America to master the art, then headed back to Singapore to perfect the recipe for her signature gin, Brass Lion Singapore Dry Gin—a tropical and distinctly Singaporean gin that evokes the island’s sense of place by only using ingredients central to Asia and in context with Asian culture. More than 15 years ago, <strong>Jodi Rosenbaum</strong><strong> 97C</strong> launched the bookstore and program for at-risk youth from her basement in Waltham, Massachusetts. An online and storefront bookseller now with two locations in Waltham and in Boston, MTW is more than just books. This year alone, MTW has employed and empowered almost 400 youth, all of whom are in foster care, homeless, or involved with the court system. Each participant spends 20-30 hours per week working in the store to manage all aspects of the MTW online, retail, pop-up, and wholesale bookselling businesses, which generated approximately $4M last year. But after a conversation with a fellow student, he realized that he was more interested in the business of medicine.  After a few failed business attempts, Wu learned about the work of Steven Wolf<span>, PT, PhD, </span>professor of Physical Therapy in the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine at Emory  School of Medicine, and found his succesful venture, Motus Nova, which is Latin for “Movement Anew.” Through his research, Dr. Wolf found that stroke damage is not always permanent and that it is possible to rewire the neural functions through hours upon hours of repetitive motion. Inventors at another university created a functional exoskeleton for both the hand and the foot that is used in hospitals for a fraction of the cost of conventional rehab. Right now, almost 200 hospitals use the technology, but Wu and his partners have taken it further and have developed the exoskeletons for home use with plans to disrupt what is currently a $50 billion-a-year business that affects more than seven million people. Just recently, the FDA approved the devices for sale directly to the user, and the Veterans Administration is considering a roll-out in their facilities on a national level. But, considering how many hours the rehabilitation takes and the mindless repetition, how does Wu keep the patient involved? But for now, the legislative database tracks 2,800 municipalities, 2,500 state agencies, and 500 federal bodies. Applying data technology to government advocacy has streamlined the legislative process.
