and when the Chaldeans<MH3778> who had been besieging<MH6696a, 5921> Jerusalem<MH3389> heard<MH8085> the report<MH8088> about them, they withdrew<MH5927> from Jerusalem<MH3389>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/37-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Then the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068> came<MH1961> to Jeremiah<MH3414> the prophet<MH5030>, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/37-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>“This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478> says<MH559>: ‘This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> you are to say<MH559> to the king<MH4428> of Judah<MH3063>, who sent<MH7971> you to Me to inquire<MH1875> of Me: “Behold<MH2009>, Pharaoh’s<MH6547> army<MH2428>, which has come<MH3318> out<MH3318> to help<MH5833> you, is going to return<MH7725> to its own land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/37-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Then the Chaldeans<MH3778> will return<MH7725> and fight<MH3898a> against<MH5921> this<MH2088> city<MH5892b>, and they will capture<MH3920> it and burn<MH8313> it with fire<MH784>.”’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/37-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559>: ‘Do not deceive<MH5378> yourselves<MH5315>, saying<MH559>, “The Chaldeans<MH3778> will certainly<MH1980> go<MH1980> <i>away</i> from us,” for they will not go<MH1980>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/37-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>For even if<MH518> you had defeated<MH5221> the entire<MH3605> army<MH2428> of Chaldeans<MH3778> who were fighting<MH3898a> against<MH854> you, and there were <i>only</i> wounded<MH1856> men<MH376> left<MH7604> among them, each<MH376> man<MH376> in his tent<MH168>, they would rise<MH6965> up<MH6965> and burn<MH8313> this<MH2088> city<MH5892b> with fire<MH784>.’” <p class="hdg">Jeremiah Imprisoned</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/37-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Now it happened<MH1961> when the army<MH2428> of the Chaldeans<MH3778> had withdrawn<MH5927> from Jerusalem<MH3389> because<MH4480, 6440> of Pharaoh’s<MH6547> army<MH2428>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/37-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>that Jeremiah<MH3414> left<MH3318> Jerusalem<MH3389> to go<MH1980> to the land<MH776> of Benjamin<MH1144> in order to take<MH2505a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>possession<MH2505a> of<MH2505a> <i>some</i> property<MH2505a> there<MH4480, 8033> among<MH8432> the people<MH5971a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/37-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>While he was at the Gate<MH8179> of Benjamin<MH1144>, a captain<MH1167> of the guard<MH6488> whose name<MH8034> was Irijah<MH3376>, the son<MH1121> of Shelemiah<MH8018> the son<MH1121> of Hananiah<MH2608a> was there<MH8033>; and he arrested<MH8610> Jeremiah<MH3414> the prophet<MH5030>, saying<MH559>, “You are deserting<MH5307> to the Chaldeans<MH3778>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/37-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>But Jeremiah<MH3414> said<MH559>, “A lie<MH8267>! I am not deserting<MH5307> to the Chaldeans<MH3778>”; yet he would not listen<MH8085> to him. So Irijah<MH3376> arrested<MH8610> Jeremiah<MH3414> and brought<MH935> him to the officials<MH8269>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/37-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Then the officials<MH8269> were<MH7107> angry<MH7107> at Jeremiah<MH3414> and they beat<MH5221> him, and put<MH5414> him in prison<MH1004, 612> in the house<MH1004> of Jonathan<MH3083> the scribe<MH5613b>, for they had made<MH6213a> it into the prison<MH1004, 3608>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/37-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>For Jeremiah<MH3414> had come<MH935> into the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>dungeon<MH1004, 953a>, that is, the vaulted<MH2588> cell<MH2588>; and Jeremiah<MH3414> stayed<MH3427> there<MH8033> many<MH7227a> days<MH3117>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/37-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Now King<MH4428> Zedekiah<MH6667> sent<MH7971> <i>men</i> and took<MH3947> him <i>out;</i> and in his palace<MH1004> the king<MH4428> secretly<MH5643a> asked<MH7592> him and said<MH559>, “Is<MH3426> there<MH3426> a word<MH1697> from the LORD<MH3068>?” And Jeremiah<MH3414> said<MH559>, “There<MH3426> is<MH3426>!” Then he said<MH559>, “You will be handed<MH5414, 3027> over<MH5414> to the king<MH4428> of Babylon<MH894>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/37-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Moreover, Jeremiah<MH3414> said<MH559> to King<MH4428> Zedekiah<MH6667>, “<i>In</i> what<MH4100> <i>way</i> have I sinned<MH2398> against you, or your servants<MH5650>, or this<MH2088> people<MH5971a>, that you have put<MH5414> me in prison<MH1004, 3608>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/37-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And where<MH346> are your prophets<MH5030> who<MH834> prophesied<MH5012> to you, saying<MH559>, ‘The king<MH4428> of Babylon<MH894> will not come<MH935> against<MH5921> you or against<MH5921> this<MH2088> land<MH776>’? <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/37-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>But now<MH6258>, please<MH4994> listen<MH8085>, my lord<MH113> the king<MH4428>; please<MH4994> let my plea<MH8467> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>come<MH5307> before<MH6440> you and do not make me return<MH7725> to the house<MH1004> of Jonathan<MH3083> the scribe<MH5613b>, so that I will not die<MH4191> there<MH8033>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/37-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Then King<MH4428> Zedekiah<MH6667> gave<MH6680> a<MH6680> command<MH6680>, and they placed<MH6485> Jeremiah<MH3414> in<MH6485> custody<MH6485> in the courtyard<MH2691a> of the guardhouse<MH4307>, and gave<MH5414> him a loaf<MH3603> of bread<MH3899> daily<MH3117> from the bakers’<MH644> street<MH2351>, until<MH5704> all<MH3605> the bread<MH3899> in the city<MH5892b> was gone<MH8552>.
