It's been so fun to work with so many different people and watch them learn to engage with nature in new and exciting ways. I think my favorite type of class to teach was sampling for macroinvertebrates in the stream. I still remember the one time we caught a catfish. I also really enjoyed teaching astronomy and leading naturalist hikes this summer, shout-out to everyone who stayed up late to attend Sola Fide showings and came to my hikes and listened to me geek out about flowers, you're great! I'm definitely going to miss caring for all our critters and teaching alongside the other Nature Center staff. Everyone created this great environment for me as I figured out how to find my footing after graduating college and learned to blend and balance my interests in both scientific research and education. My name is Katherine. I grew up in Austin and have always been familiar with the Nature Center. I started in the mentee program when I was in high school, after which I became part of the ski rental staff. I loved every opportunity I had to help out with different classes and programs, so going into education seemed like a no-brainer. After high school, I moved up to Duluth and majored in Environmental and Outdoor Education with minors in Psychology and Deaf Studies at UMD. Every September we open up our beehives and harvest excess honey, bottle it, and sell it. Have you ever wondered why we harvest only once a year, always in September? Well, you’ve come to the right place!</span></p> <p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 14px;">Minnesota beekeepers (almost) always harvest in September. Typically by the end of September, flowers are no longer blooming, and nectar is no longer flowing. Consequently, honey production is coming to a close. Additionally, summer warmth often continues through September; opening a hive in cold weather can cause a lot of damage to the health of the hive.</span></p> <p style="margin: 0;"><span style="font-size: 14px;">However, there are a lot of other factors that determine the best time to harvest.
