</div> <p> At Indiana University East, the pursuit of knowledge goes beyond the traditional classroom. From IU East’s virtual reality lab to the university’s new archeological research center, students have the opportunity to learn and acquire new skills through a practical, hands-on approach. </p> <p> And one of the most prized instruments in IU East’s pedagogical toolbelt is its dedication to service-learning. </p> <p> Angela Lakes, Coordinator of Service-Learning at IU East, has been developing and managing service-learning projects since July 2023, offering new learning experiences for students. Under Lakes’ guidance, students are able to connect classroom knowledge with meaningful community service, allowing students to positively impact their community while honing their skills. </p> <p> “Service-learning is a unique opportunity for students,” Lakes said, explaining that there are two valuable components in the program: the experience gained through service and the personal reflection that comes from providing the service itself—giving students resume-worthy experience while offering students the opportunity to broaden their worldview. </p> <p> Many courses within the IU East curriculum require a service-learning element, and it is Lakes’ job to match students up to a service that relates to their interests and career goals while adhering to the personal schedule of the student. </p> <p> Lakes said that students who have reached out and participated in service-learning have fallen in love with it. “And that’s a wonderful thing, because as a student progresses through his or her career, that service is going to be a distinguishing point when that student applies for jobs...sometimes that service element is what really stands out to people who are looking over [resumes] and having to make decisions in a competitive setting.” </p> <p> One of IU East’s most valued form of service-learning comes from its after-school tutoring program. The program is currently underway in a few Richmond community schools and is completely free for families. Tutors are highly trained and participate in monthly development meetings, offering new learning strategies and communication skills to assist them as they engage with students. </p> <p> And while tutoring is popular with education majors as a way to preview the teaching field, students from any major can benefit from tutoring. </p> <p> “We’ve had a lot of BioMed majors, as you can imagine, that ended up being really awesome tutors because they just really have a strong grasp of advanced math,” Lakes said.<br /> <br /> She explained that IU East’s tutoring programs are so important for schools and families within the region. Richmond high school students especially benefit from tutors because “they can really see themselves in those tutors. And it gives them a confidence when they see that someone else has go through it and is on the other side of it.” </p> <p> But tutoring is merely the tip of the service-learning iceberg. The Center of Service-Learning at IU East is the home of Circle K International—the student branch of Kiwanis International, and closely connected to Richmond’s own Kiwanis Club chapter. Service is their specialty. </p> <p> Last year, for the Martin Luther King Jr. National Day of Service, the Center of Service-Learning assembled care packs for chemo patients and delivered them to the Reid Cancer Center.<br /> <br /> They collected books and treats and arranged a snack and book drive for Fairview Elementary School.<br /> <br /> They focused on voter registration efforts and have their sights on animal rescue services. </p> <p> “Then we’d like to do something for our own students, and that’s something we’ll start brainstorming about,” Lakes said. </p> <p> Lakes’ work extends beyond Richmond, too.<br /> <br /> For students away from campus, Lakes is just as eager to make a few calls. “You never know where the road’s going to take you…every student situation is unique, and we’re just so glad to be able to help them find their path, whether it’s here in this region, in this community, or in their own community.” </p> <p> Lakes also expressed her excitement to help any student who wants to offer their time to support others, no class requirement necessary. Her office is located in Hayes Hall, Room 151.<br /> <br /> “My door is always open—and I usually have snacks and drinks, so bonus!” she added. </p> <p> Service-learning offers a rare win-win scenario for all involved. It enriches and educates students while also benefiting and strengthening the community. And Lakes deeply appreciates the students she works with and is proud to support them on their academic journey. </p> <p> “I have really enjoyed getting to know the students that I’ve worked with,” Lakes said. “They’re not just amazing mentors—they are amazing people. They just give me so much hope and enthusiasm for the future because I can see that they’re going to do great things. Honestly, it just really does make me so proud to be even a small part of their educational journey.
