As we celebrate our 9th anniversary this June, we highlight our ongoing efforts to combat impunity for international crimes and human rights violations using authenticated footage captured with the eyeWitness to Atrocities app (the App) in high-risk regions.</strong></p> <p>Throughout 2023, the App remained an important tool for those documenting potential evidence of atrocity crimes. Last year, App users uploaded over 18,500 items of footage captured in various conflict zones to eyeWitness’ secure server. This footage contained items showing attacks on civilians, assaults on healthcare systems, and the destruction of residential buildings, educational facilities, cultural heritage sites, food and commercial properties, and other critical infrastructure.</p> <p>In 2023, eyeWitness submitted 27 dossiers to accountability mechanisms relating to footage of atrocity crimes. Additionally, eyeWitness provided training to more than 80 human rights documenters from 6 different countries regarding how to use the App and best documentation practices. Furthermore, we established 12 new partnerships with human rights organisations worldwide, all committed to active documentation for accountability purposes.</p> <p>Throughout 2023, eyeWitness trained more than 100 pro bono lawyers, expanding our roster to 167 pro bono lawyers who generously contributed their legal expertise to the review, cataloguing, and analysis of the footage we received. Over 842 hours of review were dedicated to 60 review sessions over the course of the year.</p> <p>Our achievements would not have been possible without the dedicated efforts of our partners on the ground, the commitment of pro bono lawyers, as well as the support we receive from individuals and organisations. We are particularly grateful to the International Bar Association, LexisNexis Legal & Professional, Hogan Lovells, DLA Piper, and other anonymous supporters for their unwavering commitment.
