Additionally there was the bombing of two churches in Baghdad and the kidnapping of two girl chlidren one in Baghdad and one in Mosul. Furthermore many Christian families received letters threatening their liquidation. </p> <p>In response to this persecution more than 1800 Christian families have been forced to flee their homes to different parts of the Nineveh Plain. الإثنين مصادمات مسلحة بين عناصر من الجيش العراقي وافراد حماية احد مقرات الحزب الديمقراطي الكردستاني وسط كركوك اسفرت عن مقتل مدني واصابة جنديين وعنصري حماية بجروح. وقال مصدر في الجيش العراقي ان المصادمات وقعت في شارع اطلس وسط كركوك، من دون أن يبين الأسباب التي دفعت لوقوع هذه الإشتباكات. وأشار المصدر إلى أنه تم فرض طوق امني على المكان من قبل قوات الشرطة التي انتشرت بكثافة.</p> <p><strong>العراق وإيران يوقعان اتفاقية لتسليم المطلوبين</strong></p> <p>اعلن وزير الدولة الناطق الرسمي باسم الحكومة علي الدباغ ،اليوم الاثنين، " ان العراق وقع اتفاقية ثنائية مع ايران تقضي بتسليم المطلوبين "، مشيرا الى إن الاتفاقية هي شبيهة بالأتفاقيات التي وقعت مع تركيا والأردن قبل اشهر لتبادل المطلوبين. <br/>من جانبها رجحت وسائل إعلام إيرانية أن يكون الغرض من الاتفاقية، تسليم العراق لعناصر منظمة مجاهدي خلق الإيرانية المطلوبين لطهران. <br/>وذكرت وكالات أنباء إيرانية رسمية أن اتفاقا لتبادل المطلوبين وقع مساء امس في العاصمة الإيرانية طهران بين وزيرا العدل الإيراني مرتضى بختياري ونظيره الشعب الكردستاني رمزي كارتال اتهامه مع ثلاثة قياديين في حزب العمال الكردستاني من قبل الولايات المتحدة بالاتجار بالمخدرات بانه مرتبط بصفقة شراء مروحيات عسكرية اميركية. <br/>واوضح كارتال لوكالة كردستان للانباء انه شعر بغضب شديد لدى سماعه النبأ قائلا انه من المستحيل ان تكون هناك أية علاقة بمتاجرة المخدرات مع اشخاص وهبوا حياتهم في سبيل نضال الشعب الكردي. <br/>ولفت كارتال الى ان الشعب الكردي الذي يبلغ سقوط قتلى وجرحى في درعا</b></p> <p>افادت وكالة "رويترز" نقلا عن مسؤولين اردنيين، ان سورية أغلقت حدودها مع الاردن اليوم الاثنين، بعد نشر وحدات من قوات الامن في مدينة درعا الجنوبية. <br/>واكد دبلوماسي جدولا لتنفيذ الانسحاب من المحافظة نهاية العام الجاري، حسب الاتفاقية الأمنية المبرمة بين بغداد وواشنطن. <br/>وقال النجيفي في تصريح صحفي" إن القوات الأمريكية في محافظة نينوى وضعت جدولا لتنفيذ الانسحاب من المحافظة نهاية العام الجاري، بعد ان لمست إصرار الأهالي من مواطنين ومسؤولين بمطالبتهم برحيلها من خلال تنظيمهم التظاهرات والاعتصامات المتواصلة". <br/>وأضاف النجيفي" أن القوات الأمريكية في محافظة نينوى تعد العدة حاليا من أجل الرحيل عن المحافظة نهاية العام الحالي، حسب الاتفاقية الأمنية المبرمة بين بغداد وواشنطن".</p> <p><b>عودة 72 أسرة عراقية من سوريا خلال 48 ساعة الماضية</b></p> <p>كشف مصدر في منفذ الوليد الحدودي العراقي مع سوريا ،اليوم الاثنين، أن 72 أسرة عراقية عادت إلى البلاد قادمة من سوريا خلال 48 ساعة الماضية نتيجة الأوضاع التي تشهدها المدن السورية. <br/>وقال المصدر" إن 72 أسرة عراقية دخلت العراق خلال الـ48 ساعة الماضية عن طريق منفذ الوليد الحدودي، قادمين من مدن حمص ودرعا وريف دمشق واللاذقية السورية"، مبينا " أن الأسر العائدة أبلغت السلطات العراقية أنها اضطرت لمغادرة سوريا خوفا على أبنائهم من حملة الاعتقالات العشوائية التي تنفذها الشرطة السرية السورية". <br/>وأضاف المصدر" أن السلطات العراقية عملت على تسهيل عملية دخول تلك الأسر إلى الأراضي العراقية"، لافتا إلى" أن وجود عدد من كبار السن والمرضى بين تلك الأسر ".</p> <p><strong>وصول طائرة جثامين العراقيين في حادث العمرة في سوريا </strong></p> <p>وصلت صباح اليوم الى مطار البصرة طائرة عراقية وعلى متنها عدد من الجثامين والجرحى الذي اصيبوا في حادث سيارة العمرة في سوريا. <br/>وقال مصدر في المطار للوكالة الاخبارية للانباء: وصلت صباح اليوم الاثنين الطائرة العراقية القادمة من سوريا وعلى متنها 29جثمانا و20مصابا جميعهم من ابناء البصرة. <br/>واضاف المصدر, ان اهالي القتلى والجرحى وعدد من المسؤولين كانوا في استقبال ذويهم الذين قضوا وجرحوا في الحادث، مبينا ان الجرحى تم نقلهم الى عدد من مستشفيات البصرة لتلقي العلاج. <br/>يذكر ان الضحايا كانوا في طريقهم الى اداء العمرة عن طريق البر عبر الاراضي السورية وتعرضوا لحادث تصادم مع احدى الشاحنات في الطريق البري ، مما اسفر عن انقلاب السيارة في احد الوديان من ارتفاع 15م ،عن مستوى كتلة الاحرار التابعة للتيار الصدري ان عودة زعيم التيارمقتدى الصدر الى النجف لاعلاقة لها بموضوع قضية تمديد بقاء القوات الامريكية في البلاد. <br/>وقال القيادي الذي فضل عدم ذكر اسمه (للوكالة الاخبارية للانباء) امس ان الصدر طالب علم ومتفرغ للدراسة وعودته لاتعني انه قادم لغرض التحقق من مسالة بقاء القوات الاجنبية. <br/>يذكر ان زعيم التيار الصدري مقتدى الصدر عاد الى النجف أمس قادماً من قم، وكانت تقارير صحفية قد اشارت الى ان عودة الصدر جاء ليتحقق بنفسه عما يروِّج له البعض من وجود اتفاق سري بين حكومة المالكي والإدارة الاميركية يقضي بتمديد بقاء القوات الامريكية في البلاد .</p> <p><strong>كنا:هناك مظلومية على المسيحيين بسبب عدم وجود توازن بين الحجم السكاني والتمثيل البرلماني </strong></p> <p>اكد النائب المسيحي ورئيس قائمة الرافدين البرلمانية يونادم كنا ان هناك مظلومية على المسيحيين لانه لايوجد توازن بين الحجم السكاني والتمثيل البرلماني. واكد كنا في تصريح صحفي " نحن لا ننعزل كدين أو كقومية ولكن نحن عراقيون وسنبقى, وهناك كثافة سكانية بما يعادل نصف مليون نسمة. مبينا" ان المسيحيين لايريدون الانعزال وهذه الفكرة سوقت خطاء بسبب التسويف ,لا طابع ديني أو قومي لطرح وهذا الكلام .مشيرا" سيكون هذا صحيح لو كانت الفكرة دينية أو قومية وهذا مرفوض لأنه بالأساس يتقاطع مع الدستور . موضحا" ان العراق يعيش صراعات ذات طابع يحمل عناوين فرعية وليس وطنية وهذه مشكلة العراق ألأساسية.متسائلا" هل مايجمعنا الوطن وهو عنواننا الرئيسي أم هناك عناوين فرعية وهذا شيء خطير ولا يخدم الوحدة الوطنية وعليه تتراكم مسألة الفساد والمحاصصة على أساس طائفي وحزبي.</p> <p><b>اسامة النجيفي : المحاصصة الطائفية دفعت بشخصيات فاسدة وضعيفة إلى مراكز صنع القرار</b></p> <p>أكد رئيس مجلس النواب أسامة النجيفي ،اليوم الاثنين، أن المحاصصة الطائفية والحزبية أدت إلى تغييب غالبية الشعب، ودفعت بشخصيات فاسدة وضعيفة إلى مكان صنع القرار في بعض مفاصل الدولة. <br/>وقال النجيفي خلال مؤتمر منظمات المجتمع المدني الذي عقد في بغداد اليوم الاثنين" إن حقوق الإنسان تبقى مدونات إلى أن يسعى الفرد في المجتمع إلى تحصيلها، أما الشعب الذي ينتظر أن تهب الحكومات له حقوق الإنسان على طبق من ذهب، فلن ينالها، وإن قدر أن ينالها فسينال قشورها". <br/>وأضاف النجيفي" أن توفير بيئة حقوق الإنسان يضعنا أمام تحد خطير، وهي كيفية إيجاد هذه البيئة في ظل دوامات بعض مسارات العملية السياسية، كالمحاصصة الطائفية التي أدت إلى تغييب غالبية الشعب لصالح النوايا الحزبية والطائفية، التي دفعت بشخصيات فاسدة وضعيفة إلى مراكز صنع القرار والإدارة في بعض مفاصل الدولة".</p> <p><b>اسامة النجيفي :بقاء القوات الاجنبية في العراق معروض على الحكومة وكلمة الفصل لمجلس النواب</b></p> <p>اعلن رئيس مجلس النواب اسامة النجيفي ان المزاج الشعبي في العراق لايريد بقاء قوات اجنبية في البلاد، مشيرا الى ان القرار الذي يجب ان يتخذ من قادة البلد والسياسيين هو الاصلح والاصوب قانونيا . <br/>واضاف خلال استقباله السفير الياباني في العراق سوسوموها سيغاوا ان الامر معروض الان على الحكومة وهي صاحبة الكلمة الاولى في تقدير حاجة العراق الى وجود قوات اجنبية من عدمه وستكون الكلمة الاخيرة والحاسمة في مجلس النواب لاقرار ذلك او رفضه. <br/>النجيفي بين "ان وجود خلافات سياسية تضر بالشراكة التي تشكلت الحكومة بموجبها وفق اتفاق سياسي معلن" لافتاً الى "وجود محاولات لاستكمال بنود هذا الاتفاق من خلال مفاوضات جارية حاليا ". <br/>وقال "اننا امام اختبار حقيقي في ممارسة الحريات وتقديم الخدمات للشعب ولو بنسب معقولة". <br/>واعرب النجيفي عن تعاطف الشعب العراقي مع الشعب الياباني في الكارثة التي اصابته جراء الاعصار والتلوث الاشعاعي الذي حصل، متمنيا ان لايكون ذلك عامل قلق للشعب الياباني .</p> <h5>الحائري يحّرم تمديد بقاء القوات الأمريكية في العراق </h5> <p>حرم المرجع الديني كاظم الحائري المقيم في إيران، الاحد ، تمديد بقاء القوات الأمريكية في العراق بعد انتهاء المدة المقررة في الاتفاقية الأمنية نهاية عام 2011، مؤكد أنه ليس من حق الحكومة العراقية والبرلمان أن يمددوا فترة بقاء هذه القوات. <br/>وقال بيان صدر عن مكتب الحائري في النجف إن المرجع يحرم تمديد بقاء المحتلين في العراق، بعد انتهاء المدة المقررة في الاتفاقية الأمنية، مضيفا أنه لا يحق للحكومة العراقية ومجلس النواب أن يمددوا فترة بقاء هذه القوات في العراق ولو ليوم واحد بعد نهاية عام 2011.</p> <p><strong>اليعقوبي:السياسيون لاضمير لهم ولا يتحركون إلاّ عندما تُحرق الأرض تحت أقدامهم وتُهدّد مصالحهم </strong></p> <p>دعا المرجع الديني الشيخ محمد اليعقوبي العراقيين الى أن يكونوا واعين ولا يسمحوا للانتهازيين بمصادرة جهودهم وتضحياتهم، ورفع شعارات غير ما خرج المتظاهرون من أجله، وأن يعرفوا قيادتهم بالخير والصلاح و لا يسيروا خلف مجهولين لا تُعرف أجنداتهم ولا الجهات التي يعملون لحسابها ويريدون توجيه الشعب عبر مواقع الفيسبوك واليوتيوب والتويتر. <br/>ونقلت الوكالة الاخبارية للانباء عن بيان لمكتب اليعقوبي قوله أن هذه اليقظة وهذه المطالبات جاءت متأخرة وبعد فوات الفرصة. <br/>وأكد اليعقوبي أن هؤلاء السياسيين لا ضمير لهم قد أعماهم حب الدنيا، ولا يتحركون إلاّ عندما تُحرق الأرض تحت أقدامهم وتُهدّد مصالحهم، لكن الشعب لم يفقه ما يقوله المخلصون له، وجاءته فرصة التغيير في الانتخابات ليختار من يعرف كفائته ونزاهته وإخلاصه لكن الأغلبية الساحقة اختارت نفس المفسدين المستأثرين.</p> <h3><font color="#800000">الاخبار الاقتصادية</font></h3> <p><strong>أعتصام سائقي باصات خط المدينة القديمة في النجف الأشرف </strong></p> <p>أضرب سائقو باصات الخط المستحدث من مرآب الداخل إلى المدينة القديمة احتجاجا على رفع هيئة النقل والمواصلات أجور النقل من 500 إلى 1000 دينار.وذكرت مصادر خاصة في المحافظة، ان سائقي الباصات شكلوا تجمعات تطالب المواطنين بالتضامن معهم للتظاهر احتجاجا على رفع الاجور. يذكر أن الإضراب أدى إلى حدوث مشاكل في نقل المواطنين وتأخر الموظفين عن الوصول الى عملهم في منطقة المدينة القديمة وبالعكس. واكد سائقو الباصات ان رفع الاجور يؤدي الى قلة ارتياد الباصات من قبل المواطنين، ما يؤدي الى انخفاض الاجور اليومية لسائقي الباصات.</p> <p><strong><span style="font-size: 1.5em"><font color="#800000">الاخبار الامنية </font></span></strong></p> <p><strong>انفجار عبوة لاصقة بحافلة صغيرة في ديالى </strong></p> <p>انفجرت عبوة لاصقة بحافلة صغيرة نوع كيا في تقاطع القدس في ديالى مما ادى الى استشهاد السائق في الحال وجرح </p> <p>العشرات .وبين المصدر " ان الانفجار ادى الى استشهاد سائق"الكيا" بالاضافة الى جرح عشرات المواطنين الابرياء واضرار مادية كبيرة . ولم يذكر المصدر اي تفاصيل اخرى.</p> <p><strong>استشهاد ضابط في الجيش الحكومي بمنطقة السيدية </strong></p> <p>استشهد صباح اليوم ضابط في الجيش الحكومية باسلحة كاتمة للصوت في منطقة السيدية جنوب غرب العاصمة بغداد.وذكر</p> <p>مصدر امني " ان مسلحين مجهولين يستقلون سيارة رباعية الدفع اطلقوا النار من مسدساتهم الكاتمة للصوت على ضابط في الجيش العراقي حال وصوله المنطقة المذكورة ما تسبب باستشهاده على الفور في حين لاذ المجرمون الى جهة غير معلومة.واشار الى ان القوات الامنية سارعت الى فرض طوق امني حول مكان الحادث بعد ان قامت بنقل الجثة الى دائرة الطب العدلي.</p> <p><strong>نجاة مسؤول العمليات المشتركة في الحويجة من محاولة اغتيال </strong></p> <p>نجا مسؤول غرفة العمليات المشتركة في قضاء الحويجة العقيد غازي احمد من محاولة اغتيال بعبوة ناسفة بحسب قول مصدر في قوات شرطة كركوك. واضاف المصدر اليوم الاثنين أن عبوة ناسفة انفجرت على سيارة العقيد غازي احمد عند خروجه من مقر قيادات العمليات المشتركة في قضاء الحويجة مشيرا الى ان العقيد إصيب بجروح طفيفة.</p> <p><strong>انفجار عبوة ناسفة شمال بغداد </strong></p> <p>أفاد مصدر أمني الاثنين بأن جنديين عراقيين أصيبا بانفجار عبوة ناسفة شمال بغداد.وقال المصدر إن عبوة ناسفة كانت مزروعة على جانب الطريق بمنطقة الأعظيمة شمال بغداد، </p> <p>انفجرت في ساعة متقدمة من ليل أمس على دورية للجيش الحكومي مما أسفر عن إصابة اثنين من عناصرها نقلا على أثرها إلى مستشفى قريب لتلقي العلاج.</p> <p><strong>العثور على جثة شاب مصابة بإطلاقات في ديالى </strong></p> <p>أفاد مصدر أمني بأن قوة أمنية عثرت على جثة تعود لشاب وهي مصابة باعيرة نارية في منطقة الرأس عند ضفاف نهر في شمال بعقوبة.وقال المصدر إن قوة امنية عثرت على جثة شاب ,</p> <p>في العقد الثاني من عمره يدعى احمد شلال وهي مصابة باعيرة نارية في الرأس وملقاة على ضفاف نهرخريسان 3كم شمال بعقوبة واضاف المصدر أن الاجهزة الامنية نقلت الجثة الى وحدة الطبابة العدلية في مستشفى بعقوبة العام.</p> <p><strong>إصابة شرطيين في انفجار قرب كنيسة في الكرادة </strong></p> <p>أصيب شرطيان ومدنيان بجروح لدى انفجار عبوة ناسفة زرعت على الطريق قرب مدخل كنيسة كاثوليكية في بغداد يوم </p> <p>مس الأحد حيث يحتفل المسيحيون بعيد القيامة.وأوضح مصدر امني" أن الانفجار استهدف عربة للشرطة كانت توفر الحماية لكنيسة القلب المقدس في حي الكرادة وسط العاصمة.هذا وأصيب العميد الركن في وزارة الدفاع عبد الغني محمد بجروح بالغة عندما انفجرت عبوة مثبتة في سيارته في منطقة العامرية غرب بغداد.</p> <p><strong>شرطيات ديالى يعملن من دون رواتب ولا مخصصات حكومية لهن </strong></p> <p>تعاني النساء العراقيات العاملات في شرطة محافظة ديالى من غبن وعدم أنصافهن من قبل الحكومة، فهن يعملن في وحدات الشرطة بشكل رسمي ولكن من دون رواتب لعدة أشهر.وقالت مصادر من الشرطة النسائية في المحافظة أن الوحدة النسائية شكلت بعد تنامي العمليات الإرهابية التي كانت تنفذها نساء تابعات لتنظيم القاعدة في المحافظة من خلال عمليات أنتحارية، حيث تم تسجيل أكثر من 32 عملية أنتحارية وقعت بالمحافظة في ذلك الوقت نفذت بواسطة نساء، تمكن من عبور السيطرات الأمنية وتفجير أنفسهن داخل أهداف معينة أسفر عنها عشرات الشهداء. وتابعت المصادر أنه وعلى اثر تلك العمليات تشكل فصيل "بنات العراق" المكون من 250 شرطية ويتسلمن مبلغاً يتراوح بين 250 و330 دولار شهريا، كانت تدفع لهن من قبل القوات الأمريكية، وقام هذا الفصيل بدوره على أكمل وجه، فلم يحصل خرق أمني من قبل أي عنصر نسوي، ولهذا أشادت الحكومة العراقية بدورهن وقالت بصراحة "إن وحدة الشرطة النسائية في ديالى ساهمت بنصيب كبير في إحباط هجمات انتحارية كانت ستنفذها نساء". وتابعت المصادر أنه في مقابل هذه التضحية والجهد والعطاء والإشادة الحكومية بدور أولئك النسوة العراقيات، التي يعملن ضمن مسمى "بنات الأحد، أن واقع الصحافة في إقليم كردستان وخاصة السليمانية مثير للقلق، مبينة أن العمل الصحافي في الإقليم يزداد خطورة. <br/>وقال رئيس الجمعية إبراهيم السراجي، لآكانيوز: إن العمل الصحفي يزداد صعوبة وخطورة في إقليم كردستان العراق، مشيراً إلى أن الأمر حدث أثناء تغطية ومتابعة وتوثيق الأحداث الأخيرة في السليمانية. <br/>وأضاف السراجي أن عدداً كبيراً من حالات الاعتداء والتجاوز التي رسمت معالم مشهد انتهاكات قيادة شرطة نينوى لطرد اللواء الركن مهدي صبيح الغرباوي المدير العام الجديد للشرطة وكان محافظ نينوى أثيل النجيفى أعلن رفضه لقرار, </p> <p>تعيين الغرباوى وأوضح أن أمر التعيين جاء من قبل الحكومة المركزية نوري المالكي بتعويض متضرري الفيضانات الاخيرة في محافظتي نينوى وكربلاء من الذين تضررت مساكنهم ومزارعهم وحقولهم وبساتينهم . <br/>وذكر وزير المالية رافع العيساوي " ان رئيس الوزراء وجه بصرف مبلغ سبعة مليارات و500 مليون دينار لمتضرري محافظة نينوى ومبلغ خمسة مليارات دينار لمتضرري محافظة كربلاء" . <br/>وكانت السيول الناجمة عن الامطار الغزيرة التي شهدتها محافظة نينوى خلال اليومين الماضيين قد ادت الى هدم اكثر من خمسين منزلا وفقدان شخصين واتلاف العديد من المزارع وخاصة في المناطق الغربية من المحافظة فيما تسببت الامطار بهدم 17 منزلا واتلاف العديد من المزارع والحقول والبساتين في كربلاء .</p> <p><b>امين بغداد يتهم الوقف السني بالتجاوز على الأماكن العامة في العاصمة</b></p> <p>اتهم أمين بغداد صابر العيساوي ديوان الوقف السني بالتجاوز على الاملاك العامة في العاصمة بغداد. <br/>وقال العيساوي في تصريح صحفي "إن ديوان الوقف السني لديه تجاوزات عدة في العاصمة ، لاسيما في جامع ام القرى دون موافقة أمانة بغداد ، ولديه عمارات خلف جامع أم الطبول وهو معلم من معالم بغداد". <br/>واضاف " أن لدى الوقف ان تمديد الاتفاقية الامنية بين الحكومتين العراقية والامريكية التي ستنتهي نهاية العام الجاري هو من صلاحية الحكومة حصرا ، لان توقيع الاتفاقيات من مهمات الحكومة. <br/>عاشور اضاف في بيان صحفي اليوم الاحد "ان دور البرلمان يتحدد بالتصويت رفضا او قبولا لما تتفق عليه الحكومة ، وان رفض حكومة المالكي لتمديد الاتفاقية وبقاء بعض القوات الامريكية في العراق ، سيكون إيذانا بنهاية الاتفاقية بشكل رسمي وتنتفي يقوم بالتشهير وكيل الاتهامات جزافا بحقها</b></p> <p>هددت المفوضية العليا المستقلة للانتخابات بـ " اتباع جميع الاجراءات القانونية التي كفلها الدستور والتشريعات النافذة ومقاضاة كل من يقوم بالتشهير وكيل الاتهامات جزافا بحقها ". <br/>وذكر بيان للمفوضية اليوم الاحد " يفترض ان المغزى الرئيس من الاستجواب هو تحقيق الافضل لها وتصحيح مسارها ، ان كان هناك ثمة خلل يستوجب تصحيحه ، كون العراق بمؤسساته الرسمية ومن خلال تجربته الحديثة والناشئة في مجال الديمقراطية ، يحتاج الى ديمومة في ترتيب وانضاج عمل تلك المؤسسات ". <br/>واشار الى " ان هناك اتهامات دون الاستناد الى الوثائق والادلة التي ينبغي توفيرها إلى "توفير الأمن ليتمكن المسيحيون العراقيون مم ممارسة حياتهم الطبيعية وطقوسهم الدينية بحرية في أنحاء البلاد". <br/>وبحسب مصادر مطلعة، فإن المئات من الأسر المسيحية استقرت في منطقة سهل نينوى، شمال شرق الموصل، منذ الهجوم المسلح على كنيسة "سيدة النجاة"، في منطقة الكرادة وسط بغداد، خلال تشرين الثاني الماضي، وهرباً من تهديدات الجماعات المسلحة لهم. <br/>يذكر أن عدد المسيحيين في العراق بلغ في الثمانينيات ما بين مليون إلى مليوني نسمة، وانخفضت هذه النسبة خلال حقبة التسعينيات بسبب توالي الحروب وتردي الأوضاع الاقتصادية، في حين هاجر القسم الأكبر منهم، بعد سنة 2003 بسبب أعمال العنف التي طالتهم في مناطق [Translation by ZENIT]</p> </p></div> <p>Syria has facilitated the reception of Iraqi refugees. Thousands of them have come, above all to Damascus, and hundreds of them continue to come to flee from death and the violence they have suffered since 2003. U.N. agencies organize their exodus to other more clement skies. While waiting for their visas, these refugees stay in Damascus, at times for two or three years and sometimes more.</p> <p>These well-formed Christians, fervent and practicing, take refuge in Christian faith and hope. They fill our churches, invigorate our parishes and reinforce the Christian faith in Syria, offering new encouragement to our parishes.</p> <p>Iraqi refugees take part assiduously in daily Mass despite the fact they come from far away, on foot or public transport.</p> <p>On asking for confession before receiving Communion, these refugees have accelerated the return to the confessional which now has waiting queues.</p> <p>Their devotion to the saints and veneration of the Virgin has relaunched the production of candles and the niches of the saints both within and outside the churches are illuminated day and night.</p> <p>Their children are numerous in the catechism and first Communion classes. Young people are involved in the choirs and liturgies of different churches.</p> <p>The war spread information technology rapidly in Iraq. These refugees who have arrived in Damascus are very familiar with the Internet and the Web. They have put their knowledge in a generous way at the service of parishes and communities. In this way, thanks to them, our parishes have been equipped with Web sites, vanguard instrument at the service of evangelization at a universal scale.</p> <p>Moved by profound piety, they come together in dozens, two or three times a week, to do the great cleaning of the cathedral and the Square of the Church until they receive their visas. Before traveling, they ensure the take over in this activity.</p> <p>They take part in prayer vigils, eucharistic adoration, pilgrimages and processions on the streets of Damascus during Holy Week and especially in the month of May. Their spiritual dynamism attracts other communities, one of our priests gives a helping hand in the Chaldean parish.</p> <p>Despite their poverty and precarious condition of life, they are generous and know how to share. Suffice it to see them as they leave Mass giving help with joy, a smile and tears.</p> <p>They live their more intimate moments in silence before the Most Blessed Sacrament, face-to-face with the Lord. For hours, they mourn the death of their loved ones and wonder about the future. And they try to understand the reason why.</p> <p>They arrive in great numbers at the archbishopric every week to say good-bye before traveling to the unknown, and at times separated: parents to Australia, children to Canada. Even in exile they cannot live as a family, an even more painful wrench.</p> <p>These Iraqi refugees passing though Damascus are itinerant missionaries who have left their imprint on the Church in Syria, which sees them pass by and wonders about its own future.</p> <p>The synod of Christians of the East was an opportunity and a hope which, however, has been unable to halt the exodus. These missionary refugees scattered in the four corners of the world are united only by prayer and the Internet, as their roots have been torn and they live the twilight of their Church. Handing over a copy of one of his books, his face breaks into a wide grin as he asks: "Would you like me to sign that for you? I tell you what, I’ll use this pen. It was the same one used to sign Saddam Hussein’s death sentence." </p> <p>Such a macabre piece of historical memorabilia might appear an unusual keepsake for an Anglican priest but then Canon White – the so-called Vicar of Baghdad – is no ordinary clergyman. As pastor to St George’s, the only Anglican church in Iraq, Canon White has been on the front line of the most violent and barbaric persecution of a Christian minority in living memory. </p> <p>Cut off from the streets of Baghdad by blast-proof barriers, razor wire and round-the-clock security, St George’s is one of the few churches still able to operate weekly services for the Iraqi capital’s rapidly diminishing Christian congregation. Scores of his worshippers have been kidnapped or murdered, and militants have routinely tried to storm the complex which lies outside the comparative safety of the Green Zone. </p> <p>Canon White, 47, who suffers from multiple sclerosis, has been shot at and kidnapped but still he returns, making sure to spend at least three weeks of every month with an embattled congregation that refer to him as their abouna (father). </p> <p>The 6ft 2in, bowtie-loving priest spoke on a brief visit back to his picturesque home in a quiet Hampshire village which he shares with his wife and two boys (for security reasons he asks us not to give their names or location). The stopover was part publicity tour for his new book Faith Under Fire, part a chance to catch up with the family. </p> <p>The Hampshire house is a pretty, single-storey family home in a quiet curving cul-de-sac, containing a theologian’s study filled with books and crucifixes from across the world. Work is a war zone 3,000 miles away, where Canon White is protected by 30 security guards. A place of sandbags and terror, particularly for Iraqi Christians, whose population has plummeted in the past 20 years from 1.4 million to just 300,000. </p> <p>The fountain pen, which Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki borrowed for a couple of days and used to sign Saddam’s death warrant, is a way of breaking the ice before talking about a subject that will inevitably be gruesome. We meet just days after Shahbaz Bhatti, Pakistan’s only Christian cabinet member, was gunned down in Islamabad and it is inevitable that the conversation quickly turns to violent persecution of Christians. "All over the world there are increasing threats against Christians," Canon White says. "Bhatti’s death is deeply disturbing. But when you’re living in the midst of the fire like in Baghdad, it’s really what happens there that concerns you. We have had 123 people killed in Baghdad since November." </p> <p>Last year in fact was a particularly brutal year for Iraq’s Christians and 2011 looked like it was going to be no different. But in the past few weeks the killings have stopped. </p> <p>As head of the Foundation for Relief and Reconciliation in the Middle East, Canon White has built unparalleled relationships with Iraq’s senior Sunni and Shia clerics. In late January he gathered them in Copenhagen to issue a joint fatwa (religious edict) condemning any attacks on minority communities. "Until then Christians were being killed every day," he says. "After the fatwa the killings stopped. It’s crucial to remember that the vast majority of Muslims we work with, they are our friends. We can only do what we do with their help." </p> <p>When he is not administering to his flock, it is these kinds of delicate negotiations between Iraq’s religious power players that occupy much of Canon White’s time in Baghdad. He has been a key negotiator in kidnappings including that of the IT worker Peter Moore, who was released, and Ken Bigley, who was killed. He has himself been taken hostage, held in a room where freshly severed fingers and toes littered the floor, and has negotiated for the release of countless Iraqis. The violence he has seen is harrowing. Does he ever lose his faith? "Never," he says. "If anything, my faith has got stronger." It’s a reply you often hear from religious people in conflict zones – but how can religion be a force for good when it does so much harm in these situations? </p> <p>"I remind myself that if religion is a force for bad it is also a force for good," he says. "If religion is the cause of this horrific violence then it is also the cure. The only way you will be able to stop this violence is engage with Iraq’s religions in a religious way. The best thing we can do is work with the Islamic leaders as most of them are not terrorists." </p> <p>Canon White places the blame for the violence against his congregants squarely at the feet of al-Qa’ida in Iraq, the primarily foreign militant network inspired by Osama bin Laden. "Those who instigate violence are mainly from outside," he says. "There are certain people you simply can’t work with and the al-Qa’ida people fall into that category." </p> <p>But he is equally infuriated by Christian bigots and publicity seekers – such as the American pastor Terry Jones, who threatened to burn the Koran. "Pastor Terry Jones is directly responsible for the murder of some of our people," Canon White says. "They have no idea how terrible it was. Throughout the time he threatened to burn the holy Koran, they were warning us that our people would be attacked. Four of my guards were killed throughout that time. He can try and say from the safety of Florida he was trying to make an important point. But it was an important point that killed our people." </p> <p>Canon White was himself a supporter of the American-led invasion of Iraq, but after all the killing, the mutilations, the kidnappings and the mass exodus of Iraq’s Christians – does he still think it was worth it? </p> <p>It’s the first time he seems unsure of himself. "I had one day in the whole of my life when I thought to myself, why did we do this," he says. "But I remember what it was like in Iraq before the war, the fear people lived under."
