It emphasizes the divine origin of the design, highlighting God's sovereignty and involvement in human affairs. The detailed instructions reflect God's care and precision, ensuring the ark's functionality and safety. This mirrors the detailed instructions given later for the Tabernacle (Exodus 25-31), showing God's desire for order and obedience.
The ark is to be 300 cubits long,
A cubit is an ancient measurement roughly equivalent to 18 inches or 45 centimeters, making the ark approximately 450 feet or 137 meters long. This immense size underscores the seriousness of the impending flood and the need for a vessel capable of preserving life. The ark's dimensions suggest a massive structure, comparable in size to modern ocean liners, indicating the scale of God's plan for salvation through Noah.
50 cubits wide,
This width, about 75 feet or 23 meters, contributes to the ark's stability and capacity. The proportions of the ark (length to width ratio of 6:1) are similar to those of modern ships, which are designed for stability in rough seas. This detail highlights the practicality and wisdom of God's design, ensuring the ark could withstand the floodwaters.
and 30 cubits high.
The height, approximately 45 feet or 13.5 meters, allows for multiple decks within the ark, maximizing space for Noah's family and the animals. This vertical dimension also suggests a structure that could endure the tumultuous conditions of the flood. The three levels (Genesis 6:16) may symbolize completeness and divine order, as seen in other scriptural instances of the number three, such as the Trinity or Jesus' resurrection on the third day.
Persons / Places / Events
1. Noah
A righteous man chosen by God to build the ark and preserve life during the flood.

2. God
The divine being who instructs Noah on how to build the ark, demonstrating His sovereignty and plan for salvation.

3. The Ark
A large vessel constructed by Noah according to God's specifications to save his family and pairs of every living creature from the flood.

4. The Flood
A cataclysmic event sent by God to cleanse the earth of its widespread wickedness.

5. The Earth
The setting for the events, which is filled with corruption and violence, prompting God's decision to send the flood.
Teaching Points
Obedience to God's Instructions
Noah's precise adherence to God's specifications for the ark demonstrates the importance of following God's guidance in our lives.

Faith in Action
Building the ark was an act of faith for Noah, showing that true faith is accompanied by action, even when the task seems daunting or the outcome uncertain.

God's Provision and Protection
The ark symbolizes God's provision and protection for those who trust in Him, reminding us of His faithfulness in times of trial.

Judgment and Salvation
The flood account illustrates both God's judgment on sin and His provision of salvation, pointing to the ultimate salvation through Jesus Christ.

Preparedness for God's Timing
Just as Noah prepared for the flood, we are called to be spiritually prepared for Christ's return, living in a way that reflects readiness and anticipation.
Lists and Questions
Top 10 Lessons from Genesis 6

How could all animal species fit and survive on the ark for the duration of the flood (Genesis 7)?

How could Noah’s Ark have housed and sustained all animal species for a year?

Is Noah's Ark discovery confirmed?

Is the Genesis flood scientifically proven?
Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers
(15) Cubits.--The cubit is the length of the arm from the elbow to the tip of the middle finger. As, further, it was regarded as one-fourth of a man's height, we may safely compute it at eighteen inches, except where the sacred or longer cubit is expressly mentioned. Thus the ark was 450 feet long, 75 broad, and 45 in depth. The Great Eastern is much larger, being: 680 feet in length. However simple her construction, there would be great difficulty in building so large a vessel, from the danger of her breaking her back, especially in the tempestuous weather which followed.

Pulpit Commentary
Verse 15. - And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of. With a cubit of twenty-one inches, the length would he 525 feet, the breadth 87 feet 6 inches, dimensions not dissimilar to those of the Great Eastern which is 680 feet long, 83 feet broad, and 58 feet deep. The cubic contents of the ark with these dimensions would be 2,411,718'75 feet, which, allowing forty cubic feet per ton, would give a carrying capacity equal to 32,800 tons. P. Jansen of Holland, in 1609, proved by actual experiment that a ship constructed after the pattern of the ark, though not adapted for sailing, would in reality carry a cargo greater by one-third than any other form of like cubical content. The difficulty of building a vessel of such enormous magnitude, T. Lewis thinks, may be got over by remembering the extreme simplicity of its structure, the length of time allowed for its erection, the physical constitution of the builders, and the facilities for obtaining materials which may have existed in abundance in their vicinity. Bishop Wilkins ('Essay towards a Philosophical Character and Language'), Dr. A. Clarke, and Bush are satisfied that the ark was large enough to contain all the animals directed to be taken into it, along with provision for a twelvemonth; but computations founded on the number of the species presently existing must of necessity be precarious; and besides, it is at least doubtful whether the Deluge was universal, or only partial and local, in which case the difficulty (so called) completely vanishes.

Parallel Commentaries ...

Hebrew
And this
וְזֶ֕ה (wə·zeh)
Conjunctive waw | Pronoun -
