High school and university students produced narratives that reflected their ideologies about organized crime, which were duly compared with the ideologies endorsed by Mafia members in televised interviews. This comparison has yielded several similarities, namely the presence of amoralism, familism, verticalism and religious relativism, but, at the same time, substantial differences in the form of anti-reductionism, anti-normalism and anti-victimism (vis-à-vis reductionism, normalism and victimism). Particularly, we present the main results of research carried out by Libera. Associations, names and numbers against Mafias in different high schools located in two regions in the north of Italy: Piemonte and Lombardia. We observe the Mafia phenomenon from the cultural and symbolic perspective (Santoro, 2007). In the last few years, in Italy, we have observed a growing significance of the Mafia phenomenon in the public debate. Indeed, we have seen a strong media exposure of the Mafia and the Antimafia stories (La Spina, 2009; Santoro, 2009; Santino, 2011; D'Amato, 2013). We have an important cultural production (tv series, movies, videogames, gadgets,…) in which the traditional and stereotypical images of Cosa Nostra, Camorra and 'Ndrangheta become a brand, symbol of Made in Italy (Glenny, 2009; Larke-Walsh, 2010). In addition, there is an epic social representation of the Antimafia hero (dalla Chiesa, 2014). Finally, we have a paradox: while the repressive policies against criminal organisations are getting increasingly stronger and effective, the Italian society becomes compatible with the Mafia phenomenon and Mafia organisations expand even in non traditional areas (like Piemonte and Lombardia regions; dalla Chiesa and Panzarasa, 2012; Sciarrone, 2014). We carried out the survey by a web self-administered questionnaire and we analysed the Mafia representation of the students through two types of independent variables: the socio-demographic variables, namely the gender, the type of school attended and the cultural capital of the family; the cultural variables, namely the Media use and the Antimafia education. Therefore, we investigated the role of the Media and School in conditioning the Mafia imagery among students. What we observed is that the Media influences the perception of the Mafia, while School influences the understanding about Antimafia. It analyses games of different genres with Italian organized crime as the main theme: they differ in terms of gameplay and narrative, though they all have important features in common. The study compares movies about organized crime and video games, in order to understand the relation between themes and genres in these two media. Furthermore, the paper examines both narrative aspects and game design, and is intended to raise questions concerning the genre of Mafia games. It also analyzes the role of Italian ethnic background, as well as the role played by gender and sexual orientation, and relates those elements to the values commonly associated with the Italian Mafia. Finally, the study highlights how games represent more general stereotypes that are associated with Italian culture, such as the consumption habits of food and music. I will attempt to show how the violent annihilation practiced by the Mafia can be situated in the field of nihilism, as a cultural phenomenon. I begin with the presentation of a back story, useful for approaching the semantics of violence and nihilism at work throughout the Mafia's history. Second, I summarize the forms of nihilism to which I will be referring in this chapter, and, thirdly, I sketch a short history of the Sicilian Mafia. Drawing on Foucault's conception of power and Mbembe's notion of necropolitics, I then attempt to identify the Mafia's semantics of power as a paradigm of those forms of violence and power that are hidden by traditional conceptions of western powerin particular, forms of violence that are characteristic of colonial and postcolonial contexts. Finally, through literary, cinematographic and historical examples, I examine the connections between the Mafia's symbolic semantics of violence and the emergence of nihilistic forms of power.
