The Roots & Shoots program is a global environmental, animal welfare, and humanitarian youth outreach programme operating in 110 countries. I thought to myself, is there really nothing I can do considering I’m not a doctor or a nurse,” said Michael.</p> <p>The budget tracker project allowed him to help in the country’s COVID-19 response by bringing relevant data closer to Filipinos and helping them understand what government programs were available to them during the crisis. He spent his evenings doing relief work, packing 1,000 to 2,000 bags with basic goods every night for distribution to 15,000 families around his hometown.</p> <p>“I wanted to help in my barangay because I saw how people were struggling. Now that I have it, I pray that I may never get too busy in my own affairs and accustomed to comforts that I fail to respond to the needs of others.</p> <p>I find joy in volunteering, from speaking at student conferences to spending my weekends visiting shelters for neglected children and underprivileged girls. Most of my speeches and talks are focused on self-efficacy and the power of dreams. Every time I talk to people from different realities of life, it is like the amplifiers are on me, reflecting the words of affirmation and encouragement louder. My volunteering journey started with the ‘cool’ feeling of doing good which soon developed into deep, habit-forming contentment. In this regard, Deloitte Malaysia’s aim to provide quality education to children and youth resonates with me. Having also implemented CSR initiatives for various stakeholders, I’m excited to return to a climate where private-public collaborations are increasingly seen as a necessity to drive growth, presenting opportunities to empower communities and for the exchange of expertise and resources. I felt hopeless, but I was lucky enough to meet people who believed in me and helped me build my future. With their support, I secured a scholarship to a good high school, worked for a global company, did an MBA in the US, and now work in Asia.</p> <p>Education was key in my life, and I want to help build more futures. For about 4 years, I taught English, Accounting, and Entrepreneurship to underprivileged youth during the weekends. I taught them technical skills for job hunting and encouraged them to keep studying and dream big. As a World<i>Class</i> Impact Maker, I now manage three youth mentorship programmes with a partner organisation. I remember getting on an air-conditioned shuttle bus from my state-of-the-art school in Shanghai’s Pudong district. Driving away, we barely noticed our surroundings while listening to music on our iPods. As we pulled up to a local village school, I will never forget one of my classmates say, “We are not in Kansas anymore”, alluding to the famous line in the Wizard of Oz.</p> <p>That first day of volunteering at a local village school changed everything for me — it opened my eyes to the inequalities of the world. Now at Deloitte, I can create real social impact, while also moving the needle at the top of business agendas. I am developing a platform to connect underprivileged youth to real opportunities with top-employers, through future-focused learning. By launching micro-credentials, we envision creating physical and digital career opportunities, to ensure youth outside tier-1 cities are not left behind.</p> <p>What keeps me going when the obstacles and barriers are stacked high, is my son.
