Fashion in the 1920’s varied throughout the decade but one could see the noticeable change from the previous fashion statements and eras. At the start of the decade, women began emancipating themselves from the constricting fashions by wearing more comfortable apparel. As women gained more rights and World War I forced them to become more independent, flappers came to be, mass-produced garments became available, and artistic movements increased in popularity, one can see how the fashions from the <a href='/topics/roaring-twenties' style='color:#3174a3'>roaring twenties</a> characterized the time and redefined womanhood. (<a href='/topics/1920-s' style='color:#3174a3'>1920s</a> <a href='/topics/clothing' style='color:#3174a3'>clothing</a> 1) <br /> In the early 1920s, change advanced<a data-href=/writing/document/F338ZKJTJ class="document__middle white-space--normal source-serif text-l" rel="nofollow" style="cursor:pointer;white-space: normal;"> <i>…show more content…</i> </a></p></span><span class="document__preview text-l source-serif "><p class='text-ellipsis-after'>Thanks to Coco Chanel, the iconic flapper image most closely associated with the roaring twenties came about. The flapper and flapper image didn’t actually come to be until around 1926 and even then was only in style for about three years. Typical flappers were women who appeared to have a bold attitude and were independent women who didn’t adhere to the previously innocent housewife image. A flapper usually had a bob haircut, a shorter than average dress, a flat chest, wore tons of make-up, drank illegal alcohol, smoked with a long cigarette holder, exposed her limbs and danced the Charleston. This was a drastic change from the typical American housewife to the reckless rebel. The flapper dresses stressed above the knee hemlines and construed straight, sleek shapes. This was the first time in centuries women’s legs were being seen in a garment. (1920s Fashion 1) Flappers loved to jazz up their costume and even their image. Many flappers’ dresses were adorned with jewels and intricate beading. The main object of the flapper image was to appear almost boyish rather than looking feminine. (1920s clothing 1) <br /> The nineteen twenties became the first century where mass produced goods really became available and made a significant impact in everyone’s lives. High fashion before the 1920s had really only been for the richer women of society who could afford such luxuries. Mass produced garments became available to more women who could afford them.</p></span></div><div class="paper__gradient paper__gradient--bottom"></div><div class="center paper__cta"><a class="button text-m button--orange" id="ShowMoreButton" rel="nofollow" data-href="/writing/document/F338ZKJTJ">Get Access</a></div></div></div></div><div class="columns large-4 hide-for-medium-only hide-for-small-only"><div class="rhino-slot center" id="essay_ad_sidebar"></div><div class="rhino-slot center" id="essay_ad_sidebar_1"></div></div></div><div class="row essay-preview-block essay-related-block "><div class="columns large-12 padding-1 no-padding-large"><div class="columns large-12 paper--related-separator-new"><span class="paper--related-separator-word">Related</span></div><div class="rhino-slot center" id="essay_ad_related"></div><section class=""><ul id="RelatedDocumentCenter" class="unstyled"><li id="related-essay1"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-12 card box-shadow card-grade-essay paper no-padding"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 hide-for-large position-relative card-grade-essay-grade-col grade-good-essays"><div><span>Good Essays</span></div></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 position-relative hide-for-large card-grade-essay-words-col padding-left-1-imp"><a href="/essay/How-Did-Womens-Fashion-Change-In-The-7279FB1DE053EF32" class="hide-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">How Did Women's Fashion Change In The 1800s</h2></a><ul><li>1958 Words</li><li>8 Pages</li></ul></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-8 position-relative"><div class="card-grade-essay-preview-col show-for-large"><a href="/essay/How-Did-Womens-Fashion-Change-In-The-7279FB1DE053EF32" class="show-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">How Did Women's Fashion Change In The 1800s</h2></a></div><p class="text-m break-word word-break text-ellipsis-after text-ellipsis-after">Imagine it was 1860 and the latest outfit just came out! Now I know it probably would not matter to you now if just one outfit came out cause millions of new clothes came out everyday but back then even if they came out with a new fabric pattern it was huge. Yes it was the Victorian era. Women's fashion in the 1800s saw the biggest change(Lucid Crew). From the hats to the shoes, from their sports wear to house wear. Or even if you have ever wonder where we got this idea, although some people may not have but we stole it from others, yes we may have improved on it but those people had it all figured out before we did. It took that history and made it help form the clothes today. Everyone owes thanks to those people. Then, black was the new black, Luxe labels came, there was name calling and fashion was flourishing. These modern day obsessions with black and big name labels are nothing new. People should not think that they started these trends but think way back then (Lucid Crew). Women’s fashion in the 1800’s saw the biggest change because of it’s great development in it’s dressage timeline. The reason why this fashion timeline developed so much was because of all the new ideas of machines, fabrics, colors, and the people that created all of this that changed history. Men’s pants got wider and women stopped wearing their corsets and tight dresses, while older women of the age considered this scandalous and still held the thought that women should not show their ankle. Though the majority of adults disagreed with the fashion revolution, young women continually hiked up their skirts, stayed out late, and kept up with fashion trends. Their hair was cut into a short “bob” and they wore much more make-up than previous women. The hem line of the flapper’s dresses rose to the knee and they began “bounding” their chests and wearing high heels. Along with the rise of the hem line, nude colored stockings were favored over the former black; the flapper also bared her arms; this gave off a much more “naked” look than any previous generations. They did away with the corset and instead adopted the girdle, which simply flattened the abdomen rather than emphasizing the waist. The infamous Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel’s clothing designs became the epitome of 1920’s style.1</p></div><div class="columns large-1-5 position-relative show-for-large card-grade-essay-words-col"><ul><li>1618 Words</li><li>7 Pages</li><li>4 Works Cited</li></ul></div><div class="columns large-2 show-for-large position-relative card-grade-essay-grade-col grade-better-essays"><div><span>Better Essays</span></div></div><div class="small-12 medium-12 large-1-5 position-relative card-grade-essay-button-col"><a class="button text-m " href="/essay/Freedom-of-the-Flapper-FKCVYX9ZVJ">Read More</a></div></div></li><li id="related-essay4"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-12 card box-shadow card-grade-essay paper no-padding"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 hide-for-large position-relative card-grade-essay-grade-col grade-decent-essays"><div><span>Decent Essays</span></div></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 position-relative hide-for-large card-grade-essay-words-col padding-left-1-imp"><a href="/essay/The-Role-Of-Flappers-In-The-1920s-DED11541B4FC772F" class="hide-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">The Role Of Flappers In The 1920's</h2></a><ul><li>639 Words</li><li>3 Pages</li></ul></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-8 position-relative"><div class="card-grade-essay-preview-col show-for-large"><a href="/essay/The-Role-Of-Flappers-In-The-1920s-DED11541B4FC772F" class="show-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">The Role Of Flappers In The 1920's</h2></a></div><p class="text-m break-word word-break text-ellipsis-after text-ellipsis-after">In the 1920s, women’s fashion and how they were seen were changing. The hemlines rose above the knee, where as before it would reach below their ankles. Having a “boyish” look with “bobbed” and “shingle” haircuts, were really popular in the 1920s. With this new look it showed that women became freer and were equal to men. Many women became flappers who lived non- conformist lives. These women did not follow the traditional views of women. People thought they were immoral and wild. They wore heavy makeup and perfume, used inappropriate language, wore revealing clothing, smoked cigarettes and drank alcohol. Many disapproved of this lifestyle, but it allowed women to start expressing themselves. This movement affected me. The fashion made me feel like I was about to express myself. New textures and patterns created the 1920’s style. For women many more options were now acceptable. A daring new style of skirts and dresses worn above the knee were popular. “1920's Dresses were lighter and brighter and shorter than ever before” (1920's Womens Fashion). Fashion symbolizes the spirit of the times and throughout history, women have embodied every decade by distinctively making a statement with garments created by various top fashion designers. Due to the burdens of World War II, the early 1940’s was a time of conformity, regulation, and limited accessibility of basic needs for every citizen in the nation. Encouragement and support of the war effort in all ways possible and making the best of out what resources were available was expected and considered patriotic. Being in style was not necessarily top priority during the war years, however at the same time, fashion had a great influence on how people dressed.</p></div><div class="columns large-1-5 position-relative show-for-large card-grade-essay-words-col"><ul><li>680 Words</li><li>3 Pages</li></ul></div><div class="columns large-2 show-for-large position-relative card-grade-essay-grade-col grade-decent-essays"><div><span>Decent Essays</span></div></div><div class="small-12 medium-12 large-1-5 position-relative card-grade-essay-button-col"><a class="button text-m " href="/essay/The-Role-Of-Fashion-In-The-1940s-BBCA60195FBCBF7F">Read More</a></div></div></li><li id="related-essay8"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-12 card box-shadow card-grade-essay paper no-padding"><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 hide-for-large position-relative card-grade-essay-grade-col grade-better-essays"><div><span>Better Essays</span></div></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 position-relative hide-for-large card-grade-essay-words-col padding-left-1-imp"><a href="/essay/1920s-Fashion-Essay-EDC6AC79C203FA66" class="hide-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">1920s Fashion Essay</h2></a><ul><li>1140 Words</li><li>5 Pages</li></ul></div><div class="columns small-12 medium-12 large-8 position-relative"><div class="card-grade-essay-preview-col show-for-large"><a href="/essay/1920s-Fashion-Essay-EDC6AC79C203FA66" class="show-for-large"><h2 class="heading-s weight-700 brand-secondary">1920s Fashion Essay</h2></a></div><p class="text-m break-word word-break text-ellipsis-after text-ellipsis-after">Fashion in the 1920s and Its Influences This essay reflects on the remarkable and unforgettable fashions worn by multiple groups in the 1920s. Looking at the teenage and middle-aged women of this time, conforming to what society wanted was not the top priority and a change in styles appears. Women were supposed to wear clothes that covered their legs, “even [if] flapper dresses were knee-length, it was still enough to raise eyebrows” (Jamie). These women would go to speakeasies and smokes in public. The women who did these things are referred to as flappers. Men and some women saw flappers as a disgrace and were disgusted by their way of living.
