and Executive Director of the Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund, Dr. Gincel oversees programs on university research, tech transfer, and commercialization and innovation that contribute to economic growth in Maryland. He is dedicated to increasing research capacity for Maryland scientists, supporting cutting-edge technology development, and ultimately, developing cures for debilitating diseases. Recently Dr. Gincel launched a new initiative called Accelerating Cures to support regenerative medicine and cell therapy technologies moving from research to commercialization and finally to clinical trials. Accelerating Cure has five programs to address the different stages the cell therapy technologies to go through. He is a Professor and Director of Graduate Programs in the College of Pharmacy at Mercer University in Atlanta, Georgia. He also serves as the Director of the Clinical Laboratory and Co-Director of the Center for Drug Delivery Research. He has graduated over 50 PhD students and has published over 100 manuscripts. He has been the recipient of several research grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the American Diabetes Association, the Georgia Cancer Coalition, and Georgia Research Alliance. He has published over 120 full length manuscripts and 20 chapters and reviews. His focus is on womenâ€™s health and recently on regenerative medicine approaches to restoration of the urinary sphincter for women with urinary incontinence. This presentation is a review of determinates of cell therapy efficacy on urinary incontinence using nonhuman primates as an animal model of aging, chronicity of disease, estrogen deficiency, and obesity. I am presently studying the molecular mechanisms governing the interplay between lipid autacoids, adiponectin and the HO system in the regulation of adipocyte function in obesity induced-hypertension. I have extensive experience in experimental approaches of gene and stem cell therapy. My experience in stem cell biology goes back to my discovery in 1982 of the role of HO in bone marrow stem cell and stromal cell (mesenchymal stem cells) function. My record of success and productivity in the area of HO in hypertension and cardiovascular disease goes back to the first paper published on this topic in Science (1989). Mentoring is a critical element of this proposal and I bring considerable mentoring experience. I have successfully mentored undergraduate, graduate, post-doctoral and clinical fellows and junior faculty for more than 35 years. Many of these individuals have attained positions of leadership including departmental chairs, full professorships, chiefs of clinical departments and have achieved national and international recognition in their respective fields. As former chair of Physiology and Pharmacology at the University of Toledo, I was able to mentor junior and mid-level faculty and increased their success rate when applying for NIH funding. Subsequently, he spent four years of postdoctoral training at the Center for Cancer Research at MIT under the supervision of Dr. Richard Hynes investigating cell adhesion during the cell cycle. As a Scientist and a Senior Scientist at U.S. Surgical Corporation and at Baxter BioSurgery, he worked in the field of Tissue Regeneration examining products (synthetic and biologics) that successfully deliver bioactive substances and cells to enhance healing in soft and hard tissue defects. He, then, acted as a director of global expansion at Baxter BioSurgery responsible for scientific initiatives related to tissue engineering establishing collaborations between Baxter and other companies and academic institutions. Presently, Bill is a Director of R&D at CR Bard. Bill is also an adjunct professor in the Bioengineering Department at UCLA where he is continuing his research in Tissue Engineering, specifically on 3D constructs. He is on council for the Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (TERMIS) â€“ North America society and on the Executive Editorial Board for the Tissue Engineering Journal. He move to Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey in 2001 and was promoted to a Full Professor with a University Professor title in 2003. Since 1988, Dr. Shi has been studying apoptosis, especially in T cells. He published more than 130 papers on activation-induced cell death (AICD), role of c-myc in apoptosis, T cell immunobiology, and mesenchymal stem cell immunology in Nature, Science, Nature Medicine, Cell Stem Cell, Immunity, J. Exp. Med and other journals. Dr. Shi is a Receiving Editor of Oncogene and an Editor of Cell Death and Diseases.
