towards the end, <em>Fear the Walking Dead</em>'s second episode brilliantly ups the tension and ramps up the growing sense of unease, while better introducing us to more of the characters we'll be following.<br/><br/><div id="articleimage" class=" centerimgfloat "><div class="image" style="width: 618px"> <img with a superb cold open cliffhanger, as Alicia goes to find out what's happened to her boyfriend Matt. Alicia creeps around Matt's house, in a mirror-version of the premiere's opening sequence, and when she turns a corner and finds him, she looks horrified and screams... only for the screen to cut to the title card. It's a great tease, and indicative of the darkly impish nature that this show seems keen to cultivate.<br/><br/>Similarly, as Nick fiddles with the car radio, the broadcasts playfully refer to everyday things in apocalyptic terms. "This is a disaster of biblical proportions", says one reporter, on nothing more innocuous than a local sports team's recent travails.<br/><br/>But, while the show likes to have fun with us, the situations its characters find themselves in are increasingly serious. Matt has been bitten, and with nobody aware of what that means, is left to fight a losing battle against the virus, while Nick begins to go into severe withdrawal from his addiction. "I'm about to step into a world of shit," he tells Madison, referring to his impending illness. She heads back to her school to collect some confiscated drugs from the teacher's office to help wean Nick off the stuff, and bumps into the worldly Tobias in the process. Tobias is a character that has obviously watched a lot of zombie films in his days - he knows exactly how all this going to play out - but it turns out knowledge isn't everything.<br/><br/>When it comes to fending off a Walker - his former principal, no less - he's far from a natural, and it'll be interesting to see whether Tobias remains an ongoing character in the series. Will we see him grow to match his knowledge and survival instincts with physical prowess? (It's perhaps fitting that Tobias's somewhat meta character is so reminiscent of figures in the self-aware horror franchise <em>Scream</em> in the week that <a href="/web/20150905103456/http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/movies/news/a666120/wes-craven-director-of-a-nightmare-on-elm-street-and-scream-dies-aged-76.html">Wes Craven sadly passed away</a>).<br/><br/><div id="articleimage" class=" centerimgfloat "><div class="image" style="width: 618px"> <img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20150905103456im_/http://i2.cdnds.net/15/36/618x370/ustv-fear-the-walking-dead-s01e02-still-01.jpg" alt="Lorenzo James Henrie as Chris in Fear The Walking Dead S01E02" width="618" height="370"/><div class="imgcaption imgcaption_large"><p>© AMC / Justina Mintz</p></div></div></div> <br/>Elsewhere, Travis goes out in search of his son Chris, who has wound up in the middle of an impending riot in downtown LA, in a sequence that brilliantly demonstrates the advantages <em>Fear</em> has over its parent series.<br/><br/>Having shot what appeared to be an unarmed man, the police find themselves being called to account by a group of furious onlookers. It's a very pertinent sequence given the multitude of real-life instances of questionable police practices that have made high-profile splashes in the news and on social media of late.<br/><br/>While <em>The Walking Dead</em> can certainly create parallels to real-life issues, directly addressing them in ways like this is out of the question, given that the world doesn't really exist anymore. It's something that <em>Fear</em> can approach in a much more head-on capacity.<br/><br/>However, in light of <em>FtWD</em> exploring issues of the police's abuse of power and violence against minorities, this might also be a good time to highlight the rather questionable fact that the only three African American characters on the show have been the only three characters to die thus far. As the Salazar patriarch, musician and actor Ruben Blades makes an instant impression. Despite not having a great deal to do yet, he may already be the most charismatic figure on the show, and hopefully there's plenty more to come from him.<br/><br/>The big strength of <em>Fear the Walking Dead</em> thus far has been in the smaller moments; moments that we - being well attuned to the zombie apocalypse - pay attention to more than the characters.<br/><br/>Wandering around listening to headphones, for instance, is natural to the characters, but to us it's just about the worst thing you could possibly be doing in the midst of the apocalypse. A neighbour's cough becomes something sinister, while the surreal image of birthday balloons juxtaposes superbly with the heavy atmosphere of looming dread. And when even the police are stocking up to leave town, you know you're in for a world of trouble. <br/><br/>Perhaps the second episode's most telling moment comes when Madison closes her office door and pauses, a weighted look on Kim Dickens's face. Madison senses that whatever's happening, she'll never set foot in that office again. It's only a small moment, but it's one that conveys just how quickly and severely everything is falling apart.<br/><br/><div id="articleimage" class=" centerimgfloat "><div class="image" style="width: 618px"> <img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20150905103456im_/http://i1.cdnds.net/15/36/618x404/ustv-fear-the-walking-dead-s01e02-still-03.jpg" alt="Mercedes Mason as Ofelia in Fear The Walking Dead S01E02" width="618" height="404"/><div class="imgcaption imgcaption_large"><p>© AMC / Justina Mintz</p></div></div></div> <br/>The score, too, is worthy of praise, as the constant thrumming and rumbling of the bass helps to amp up the tension in every scene. The score seems to waver, trembling on the edge, much like the world it underpins. And even when Alicia - by far the weakest of the principal characters - goes to do a very stupid thing (such is the way of teenagers in TV dramas), the script mercifully manages to give her a reason to pull back.<br/><br/>On the whole, this is a very strong second episode - in fact, it's difficult not to think that this should have aired directly after the first - or even been part of it.<br/><br/>It's an hour that better introduces us to characters that got short shrift in the opener - Chris, Liza, Tobias - and also introduces us to the Salazars, who round out the cast for the series well. Best of all, that musical montage at the end, which checks in on every character's situation just as society has begun to crumble in earnest, makes for a brilliant "Here we go then!" climax.<br/><br/>It feels like a statement: these are our characters, this is their situation; let's see how they do.
