It is based on the optimization of the expected present value of the total cost, which includes the initial cost of structures as well as the cost due to earthquakes. Different types of seismicity models are considered, including one for characteristic earthquakes. Uncertainties are included in some variables to observe the influence on optimum values. Optimum seismic design coefficients are computed for three different structural types representing high, medium and low rise buildings, located near and far from the seismic sources. Ordinary and important structures are considered in the analysis. The results of optimum values show an important influence of seismicity models as well as of uncertainties on the variables. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=importance%20factors" title="importance factors">importance factors</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=optimum%20parameters" title=" optimum parameters"> optimum parameters</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seismic%20losses" title=" seismic losses"> seismic losses</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seismic%20risk" title=" seismic risk"> seismic risk</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=total%20cost" title=" total cost"> total cost</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/50007/expected-present-value-of-losses-in-the-computation-of-optimum-seismic-design-parameters" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/50007.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">284</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1993</span> Seismic Performance Assessment of Pre-70 RC Frame Buildings with FEMA P-58 </h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=D.%20Cardone">D. FEMA P-58 provides engineers a practical tool for the performance seismic assessment of buildings. In this study, FEMA P-58 is applied to two typical Italian pre-1970 reinforced concrete frame buildings, characterized by plain rebars as steel reinforcement and masonry infills and partitions. Given that suitable tools for these buildings are missing in FEMA P- 58, specific fragility curves and loss functions are first developed. Next, building performance is evaluated following a time-based assessment approach. Finally, expected annual losses for the selected buildings are derived and compared with past applications to old RC frame buildings representative of the US building stock.&nbsp; <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=FEMA%20P-58" title="FEMA P-58">FEMA P-58</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=RC%20frame%20buildings" title=" RC frame buildings"> RC frame buildings</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=plain%20rebars" title=" plain rebars"> plain rebars</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Masonry%20infills" title=" Masonry infills"> Masonry infills</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fragility%20functions" title=" fragility functions"> fragility functions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=loss%20functions" title=" loss functions"> loss functions</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=expected%20annual%20loss" title=" expected annual loss"> expected annual loss</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/51136/seismic-performance-assessment-of-pre-70-rc-frame-buildings-with-fema-p-58" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/51136.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">324</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1992</span> Application of Post-Stack and Pre-Stack Seismic Inversion for Prediction of Hydrocarbon Reservoirs in a Persian Gulf Gas Field</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Nastaran%20Moosavi">Nastaran Moosavi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mohammad%20Mokhtari"> Mohammad Mokhtari</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Seismic inversion is a technique which has been in use for years and its main goal is to estimate and to model physical characteristics of rocks and fluids. Generally, it is a combination of seismic and well-log data. Seismic inversion can be carried out through different methods; we have conducted and compared post-stack and pre- stack seismic inversion methods on real data in one of the fields in the Persian Gulf. Pre-stack seismic inversion can transform seismic data to rock physics such as P-impedance, S-impedance and density. While post- stack seismic inversion can just estimate P-impedance. Then these parameters can be used in reservoir identification. Based on the results of inverting seismic data, a gas reservoir was detected in one of Hydrocarbon oil fields in south of Iran (Persian Gulf). By comparing post stack and pre-stack seismic inversion it can be concluded that the pre-stack seismic inversion provides a more reliable and detailed information for identification and prediction of hydrocarbon reservoirs. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=density" title="density">density</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=p-impedance" title=" p-impedance"> p-impedance</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=s-impedance" title=" s-impedance"> s-impedance</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=post-stack%20seismic%20inversion" title=" post-stack seismic inversion"> post-stack seismic inversion</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=pre-stack%20seismic%20inversion" title=" pre-stack seismic inversion"> pre-stack seismic inversion</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/54295/application-of-post-stack-and-pre-stack-seismic-inversion-for-prediction-of-hydrocarbon-reservoirs-in-a-persian-gulf-gas-field" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/54295.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">323</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1991</span> Probabilistic Seismic Loss Assessment of Reinforced Concrete (RC) Frame Buildings Pre- and Post-Rehabilitation</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=A.%20Flora">A. Pilotis-type RC frame buildings, featuring an uniform infill throughout the height and an open ground floor, were, and still are, quite popular all over the world, as they offer large open areas very suitable for retail space at the ground floor. These architectural advantages, however, are of detriment to the building seismic behavior, as they can determine a soft-storey collapse mechanism. Extensive numerical analyses are carried out to quantify and benchmark the performance of the selected building, both in terms of overall collapse capacity and expected losses. Alternative retrofit strategies are then examined, including: (i) steel jacketing of RC columns and beam-column joints, (ii) steel bracing and (iv) seismic isolation. The Expected Annual Loss (EAL) of the selected case-study building, pre- and post-rehabilitation, is evaluated, following a probabilistic approach. The breakeven time of each solution is computed, comparing the initial cost of the retrofit intervention with expected benefit in terms of EAL reduction. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=expected%20annual%20loss" title="expected annual loss">expected annual loss</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=reinforced%20concrete%20buildings" title=" reinforced concrete buildings"> reinforced concrete buildings</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seismic%20loss%20assessment" title=" seismic loss assessment"> seismic loss assessment</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seismic%20retrofit" title=" seismic retrofit"> seismic retrofit</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/83756/probabilistic-seismic-loss-assessment-of-reinforced-concrete-rc-frame-buildings-pre-and-post-rehabilitation" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/83756.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">240</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1990</span> Seismic Vulnerability Analysis of Arch Dam Based on Response Surface Method</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Serges%20Mendomo%20Meye">Serges Mendomo Meye</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Li%20Guowei"> Li Guowei</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Shen%20Zhenzhong"> Shen Zhenzhong</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Earthquake is one of the main loads threatening dam safety. Once the dam is damaged, it will bring huge losses of life and property to the country and people. Therefore, it is very important to research the seismic safety of the dam. Due to the complex foundation conditions, high fortification intensity, and high scientific and technological content, it is necessary to adopt reasonable methods to evaluate the seismic safety performance of concrete arch dams built and under construction in strong earthquake areas. Structural seismic vulnerability analysis can predict the probability of structural failure at all levels under different intensity earthquakes, which can provide a scientific basis for reasonable seismic safety evaluation and decision-making. In this paper, the response surface method (RSM) is applied to the seismic vulnerability analysis of arch dams, which improves the efficiency of vulnerability analysis. Based on the central composite test design method, the material-seismic intensity samples are established. The response surface model (RSM) with arch crown displacement as performance index is obtained by finite element (FE) calculation of the samples, and then the accuracy of the response surface model (RSM) is verified. To obtain the seismic vulnerability curves, the seismic intensity measure ??(?1) is chosen to be 0.1~1.2g, with an interval of 0.1g and a total of 12 intensity levels. For each seismic intensity level, the arch crown displacement corresponding to 100 sets of different material samples can be calculated by algebraic operation of the response surface model (RSM), which avoids 1200 times of nonlinear dynamic calculation of arch dam; thus, the efficiency of vulnerability analysis is improved greatly. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=high%20concrete%20arch%20dam" title="high concrete arch dam">high concrete arch dam</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=performance%20index" title=" performance index"> performance index</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=response%20surface%20method" title=" response surface method"> response surface method</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seismic%20vulnerability%20analysis" title=" seismic vulnerability analysis"> seismic vulnerability analysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=vector-valued%20intensity%20measure" title=" vector-valued intensity measure"> vector-valued intensity measure</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/140363/seismic-vulnerability-analysis-of-arch-dam-based-on-response-surface-method" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/140363.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">240</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1989</span> Resilient Analysis as an Alternative to Conventional Seismic Analysis Methods for the Maintenance of a Socioeconomical Functionality of Structures</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Sara%20Muhammad%20Elqudah">Sara Muhammad Elqudah</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Vigh%20L%C3%A1szl%C3%B3%20Gergely"> Vigh László Gergely</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Catastrophic events, such as earthquakes, are sudden, short, and devastating, threatening lives, demolishing futures, and causing huge economic losses. Current seismic analyses and design standards are based on life safety levels where only some residual strength and stiffness are left in the structure leaving it beyond economical repair. Consequently, it has become necessary to introduce and implement the concept of resilient design. Resilient design is about designing for ductility over time by resisting, absorbing, and recovering from the effects of a hazard in an appropriate and efficient time manner while maintaining the functionality of the structure in the aftermath of the incident. Resilient analysis is mainly based on the fragility, vulnerability, and functionality curves where eventually a resilience index is generated from these curves, and the higher this index is, the better is the performance of the structure. In this paper, seismic performances of a simple two story reinforced concrete building, located in a moderate seismic region, has been evaluated using the conventional seismic analyses methods, which are the linear static analysis, the response spectrum analysis, and the pushover analysis, and the generated results of these analyses methods are compared to those of the resilient analysis. Results highlight that the resilience analysis was the most convenient method in generating a more ductile and functional structure from a socio-economic perspective, in comparison to the standard seismic analysis methods. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=conventional%20analysis%20methods" title="conventional analysis methods">conventional analysis methods</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=functionality" title=" functionality"> functionality</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=resilient%20analysis" title=" resilient analysis"> resilient analysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seismic%20performance" title=" seismic performance"> seismic performance</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/159399/resilient-analysis-as-an-alternative-to-conventional-seismic-analysis-methods-for-the-maintenance-of-a-socioeconomical-functionality-of-structures" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/159399.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">116</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1988</span> A Review of Masonry Buildings Restrengthening Methods</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Negar%20Sartipzadeh">Negar Sartipzadeh</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The historic buildings are generally the ones which have been built by materials like brick, mud, stone, and wood. Some phenomena such as severe earthquakes can be tremendously detrimental to the structures, imposing serious effects and losses on such structures. Hence, it matters a lot to ascertain safety and reliability of the structures under such circumstances. It has been asserted that the major reason for the collapse of Unreinforced Masonry (URM) in various earthquakes is the incapability of resisting the forces and vice versa because such URMs are meant for the gravity load and they fail to withstand the shear forces inside the plate and the bending forces outside the plate. For this reason, restrengthening such structures is a key factor in lowering the seismic loss in developing countries. Seismic reinforcement of the historic buildings with regard to their cultural value on one hand, and exhaustion and damage of many of the structural elements on the other hand, have brought in restricting factors which necessitate the seismic reinforcement methods meant for such buildings to be maximally safe, non-destructive, effective, and non-obvious. Henceforth, it is pinpointed that making use of diverse technologies such as active controlling, Energy dampers, and seismic separators besides the current popular methods would be justifiable for such buildings, notwithstanding their high imposed costs. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=masonry%20buildings" title="masonry buildings">masonry buildings</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seismic%20reinforcement" title=" seismic reinforcement"> seismic reinforcement</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Unreinforced%20Masonry%20%28URM%29" title=" Unreinforced Masonry (URM)"> Unreinforced Masonry (URM)</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=earthquake" title=" earthquake"> earthquake</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/11241/a-review-of-masonry-buildings-restrengthening-methods" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/11241.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">280</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1987</span> Seizure Effects of FP Bearings on the Seismic Reliability of Base-Isolated Systems</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Paolo%20Castaldo">Paolo Castaldo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Bruno%20Palazzo"> Bruno Palazzo</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Laura%20Lodato"> Laura Lodato</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This study deals with the seizure effects of friction pendulum (FP) bearings on the seismic reliability of a 3D base-isolated nonlinear structural system, designed according to Italian seismic code (NTC08). The isolated system consists in a 3D reinforced concrete superstructure, a r.c. substructure and the FP devices, described by employing a velocity dependent model. The seismic input uncertainty is considered as a random variable relevant to the problem, by employing a set of natural seismic records selected in compliance with L’Aquila (Italy) seismic hazard as provided from NTC08. Several non-linear dynamic analyses considering the three components of each ground motion have been performed with the aim to evaluate the seismic reliability of the superstructure, substructure, and isolation level, also taking into account the seizure event of the isolation devices. Finally, a design solution aimed at increasing the seismic robustness of the base-isolated systems with FPS is analyzed. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=FP%20devices" title="FP devices">FP devices</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seismic%20reliability" title=" seismic reliability"> seismic reliability</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seismic%20robustness" title=" seismic robustness"> seismic robustness</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seizure" title=" seizure"> seizure</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/55083/seizure-effects-of-fp-bearings-on-the-seismic-reliability-of-base-isolated-systems" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/55083.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">412</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1986</span> Introduction of the Harmfulness of the Seismic Signal in the Assessment of the Performance of Reinforced Concrete Frame Structures</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kahil%20Amar">Kahil Amar</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Boukais%20Said"> Boukais Said</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kezmane%20Ali"> Kezmane Ali</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hannachi%20Naceur%20Eddine"> Hannachi Naceur Eddine</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hamizi%20Mohand"> Hamizi Mohand</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The principle of the seismic performance evaluation methods is to provide a measure of capability for a building or set of buildings to be damaged by an earthquake. Multi-support excitations displacement input models and nonlinear time history analysis was used to calculate seismic response of structures, and the results were compared with bridge in the near-fault region. The results showed that the seismic response features of bridges crossing fault were different from the bridges in the near-fault region. The design according to the bridge in near-fault region would cause the calculation results with insecurity and non-reasonable if the effect of cross the fault was ignored. However, there is a limited experience in quantifying the sources of risk management in Egypt and in designing efficient strategies to keep away serious impacts of earthquakes. From the historical point of view and recent instrumental records, there are some seismo-active regions in Egypt, where some significant earthquakes had occurred in different places. The special tectonic features in Egypt: Aswan, Greater Cairo, Red Sea and Sinai Peninsula regions are the territories of a high seismic risk, which have to be monitored by up-to date technologies. The investigations of the seismic events and interpretations led to evaluate the seismic hazard for disaster prevention and for the safety of the dense populated regions and the vital national projects as the High Dam. In addition to the monitoring of the recent crustal movements, the most powerful technique of satellite geodesy GPS are used where geodetic networks are covering such seismo-active regions. The results from the data sets are compared and combined in order to determine the main characteristics of the deformation and hazard estimation for specified regions. The final compiled output from the seismological and geodetic analysis threw lights upon the geodynamical regime of these seismo-active regions and put Aswan and Greater Cairo under the lowest class according to horizontal crustal strains classifications. This work will serve a basis for the development of so-called catastrophic models and can be further used for catastrophic risk management. Also, this work is trying to evaluate risk of large catastrophic losses within the important regions including the High Dam, strategic buildings and archeological sites. Studies on possible scenarios of earthquakes and losses are a critical issue for decision making in insurance as a part of mitigation measures. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=b-value" title="b-value">b-value</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Gumbel%20distribution" title=" Gumbel distribution"> Gumbel distribution</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seismic%20and%20GPS%20data" title=" seismic and GPS data"> seismic and GPS data</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=strain%20parameters" title=" strain parameters"> strain parameters</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/35752/using-seismic-and-gps-data-for-hazard-estimation-in-some-active-regions-in-egypt" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/35752.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">459</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1982</span> Seismic Performance Evaluation of Existing Building Using Structural Information Modeling</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Byungmin%20Cho">Byungmin Cho</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Dongchul%20Lee"> Dongchul Lee</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Taejin%20Kim"> Taejin Kim</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Minhee%20Lee"> Minhee Lee</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> The procedure for the seismic retrofit of existing buildings includes the seismic evaluation. In the evaluation step, it is assessed whether the buildings have satisfactory performance against seismic load. Based on the results of that, the buildings are upgraded. To evaluate seismic performance of the buildings, it usually goes through the model transformation from elastic analysis to inelastic analysis. However, when the data is not delivered through the interwork, engineers should manually input the data. In this process, since it leads to inaccuracy and loss of information, the results of the analysis become less accurate. Therefore, in this study, the process for the seismic evaluation of existing buildings using structural information modeling is suggested. This structural information modeling makes the work economic and accurate. To this end, it is determined which part of the process could be computerized through the investigation of the process for the seismic evaluation based on ASCE 41. The structural information modeling process is developed to apply to the seismic evaluation using Perform 3D program usually used for the nonlinear response history analysis. To validate this process, the seismic performance of an existing building is investigated. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=existing%20building" title="existing building">existing building</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=nonlinear%20analysis" title=" nonlinear analysis"> nonlinear analysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seismic%20performance" title=" seismic performance"> seismic performance</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=structural%20information%20modeling" title=" structural information modeling"> structural information modeling</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/31008/seismic-performance-evaluation-of-existing-building-using-structural-information-modeling" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/31008.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">384</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1981</span> Application of Seismic Isolators in Kutahya City Hospital Project Utilizing Double Friction Pendulum Type Devices</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Kaan%20Yamanturk">Kaan Yamanturk</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Cihan%20Dogruoz"> Cihan Dogruoz</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Seismic isolators have been utilized around the world to protect the structures, nonstructural components and contents from the damaging effects of earthquakes. In Structural Engineering, seismic isolation is used for protecting buildings and its vibration-sensitive contents from earthquakes. Seismic isolation is a passive control system that lowers effective earthquake forces by utilizing flexible bearings. One of the most significant isolation systems is seismic isolators. In this paper, double pendulum type Teflon coated seismic isolators utilized in a city hospital project by Guris Construction and Engineering Co. Inc, located in Kutahya, Turkey, have been investigated. Totally, 498 seismic isolators were applied in the project. These isolators are double friction pendulum type seismic isolation devices. The review of current practices is also examined in this study. The focus of this study is related to the application of passive seismic isolation systems for buildings as practiced in Kutahya City Hospital Project. Based on the study, the acceleration at the top floor will be 0.18 g and it will decrease 0.01 g in every floor. Therefore, seismic isolators are very important for buildings located in earthquake zones. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=maximum%20considered%20earthquake" title="maximum considered earthquake">maximum considered earthquake</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=moment%20resisting%20frame" title=" moment resisting frame"> moment resisting frame</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seismic%20isolator" title=" seismic isolator"> seismic isolator</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seismic%20design" title=" seismic design"> seismic design</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/109879/application-of-seismic-isolators-in-kutahya-city-hospital-project-utilizing-double-friction-pendulum-type-devices" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/109879.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">154</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1980</span> Study on Seismic Assessment of Earthquake-Damaged Reinforced Concrete Buildings</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fu-Pei%20Hsiao">Fu-Pei Hsiao</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Fung-Chung%20Tu"> Fung-Chung Tu</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chien-Kuo%20Chiu"> Chien-Kuo Chiu</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In this work, to develop a method for detailed assesses of post-earthquake seismic performance for RC buildings in Taiwan, experimental data for several column specimens with various failure modes (flexural failure, flexural-shear failure, and shear failure) are used to derive reduction factors of seismic capacity for specified damage states. In this study, the accurate and computationally efficient algorithm is proposed for accurately selecting ground motions that satisfy the requirements specified in current seismic design provisions. The accuracy of the proposed algorithm is verified using single-degree-of-freedom systems with various natural periods and yield strengths. The main objective in performance-based design is to achieve a system performing precisely to meet the design objectives so to reduce unintended seismic risks and associated losses. Energy-based earthquake-resistant design is one of the design methodologies that can be implemented in performance-based earthquake engineering. In energy-based design, the seismic demand is usually described as the ratio of the hysteretic to input energy. Once the hysteretic energy is known as a percentage of the input energy, it is distributed among energy-dissipating components of a structure. The hysteretic to input energy ratio is highly dependent on the inherent damping of a structural system. In numerical analysis, damping can be modeled as stiffness-proportional, mass-proportional, or a linear combination of stiffness and mass. In this study, the effect of mathematical modeling of damping on the estimation of seismic energy demands is investigated by considering elastic-perfectly-plastic single-degree-of-freedom systems representing short to long period structures. Furthermore, the seismicity of Vancouver, Canada, is used in the nonlinear time history analysis. According to the preliminary results, the input energy demand is not sensitive to the type of damping models deployed. Hence, consistent results are achieved regardless of the damping models utilized in the numerical analyses. On the other hand, the hysteretic to input energy ratios vary significantly for the different damping models. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=damping" title="damping">damping</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=energy-based%20seismic%20design" title=" energy-based seismic design"> energy-based seismic design</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=hysteretic%20energy" title=" hysteretic energy"> hysteretic energy</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=input%20energy" title=" input energy"> input energy</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/111458/the-effect-of-mathematical-modeling-of-damping-on-the-seismic-energy-demands" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/111458.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">168</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1977</span> The Necessity of Retrofitting for Masonry Buildings in Turkey</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Soner%20G%C3%BCler">Soner Güler</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mustafa%20G%C3%BClen"> Mustafa Gülen</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Eylem%20G%C3%BCzel"> Eylem Güzel</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> Masonry buildings constitute major part of building stock in Turkey. Also, scaling amplifies low amplitude events in deeper region which disappear due to high amplitude shallow events that saturate amplitude scale. We have focused on significance of scaling data to aid interpretation. This study elucidates a proper seismic loading procedure in workstations without using default preset parameters as available in most software suites. Differences and distribution of amplitude values at different depth for seismic data are probed in this exercise. Proper loading parameters are identified and associated steps are explained that needs to be taken care of while loading data. Finally, the exercise interprets the un-certainties which might arise when correlating scaled and unscaled versions of seismic data with synthetics. As, seismic well tie correlates the seismic reflection events with well markers, for our study it is used to identify regions which are enhanced and/or affected by scaling parameter(s). <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=clipping" title="clipping">clipping</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=compression" title=" compression"> compression</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=resolution" title=" resolution"> resolution</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seismic%20scaling" title=" seismic scaling"> seismic scaling</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/24110/seismic-data-scaling-uncertainties-potential-and-applications-in-workstation-interpretation" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/24110.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">469</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1975</span> Preliminary Seismic Hazard Mapping of Papua New Guinea</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hadi%20Ghasemi">Hadi Ghasemi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mark%20Leonard"> Mark Leonard</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Spiliopoulos%20Spiro"> Spiliopoulos Spiro</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Phil%20Cummins"> Phil Cummins</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Mathew%20Moihoi"> Mathew Moihoi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Felix%20Taranu"> Felix Taranu</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Eric%20Buri"> Eric Buri</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Chris%20Mckee"> Chris Mckee</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> In this study the level of seismic hazard in terms of Peak Ground Acceleration (PGA) was calculated for return period of 475 years, using modeled seismic sources and assigned ground-motion equations. The calculations were performed for bedrock site conditions (Vs30=760 m/s). From the results it is evident that the seismic hazard reaches its maximum level (i.e. PGA≈1g for 475 yr return period) at the Huon Peninsula and southern New Britain regions. Disaggregation analysis revealed that moderate to large earthquakes occurring along the New Britain Trench mainly control the level of hazard at these locations. The open-source computer program OpenQuake developed by Global Earthquake Model foundation was used for the seismic hazard computations. However, these masonry panels tend to influence the structural response. Thus, these structures can be regarded as seismic risk buildings, although in the Algerian seismic code there is little guidance on the seismic evaluation of infilled frame buildings. In this study, three RC frames with 2, 4, and 8 story and subjected to three recorded Algerian accelerograms are studied. The diagonal strut approach is adopted for modeling the infill panels and a fiber model is used to model RC members. This paper reports on the seismic evaluation of RC frames with brick infill panels. The results obtained show that the masonry panels enhance the load lateral capacity of the buildings and the infill panel configuration influences the response of the structures. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seismic%20design" title="seismic design">seismic design</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=RC%20frames" title=" RC frames"> RC frames</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=infill%20panels" title=" infill panels"> infill panels</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=non%20linear%20dynamic%20analysis" title=" non linear dynamic analysis"> non linear dynamic analysis</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/21693/behaviour-of-reinforced-concrete-infilled-frames-under-seismic-loads" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/21693.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">546</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1971</span> Seismic Fragility Functions of RC Moment Frames Using Incremental Dynamic Analyses</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Seung-Won%20Lee">Seung-Won Lee</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=JongSoo%20Lee"> JongSoo Lee</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Won-Jik%20Yang"> Won-Jik Yang</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Hyung-Joon%20Kim"> Hyung-Joon Kim</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> A capacity spectrum method (CSM), one of methodologies to evaluate seismic fragilities of building structures, has been long recognized as the most convenient method, even if it contains several limitations to predict the seismic response of structures of interest. This paper proposes the procedure to estimate seismic fragility curves using an incremental dynamic analysis (IDA) rather than the method adopting a CSM. To achieve the research purpose, this study compares the seismic fragility curves of a 5-story reinforced concrete (RC) moment frame obtained from both methods, an IDA method and a CSM. Both seismic fragility curves are similar in slight and moderate damage states whereas the fragility curve obtained from the IDA method presents less variation (or uncertainties) in extensive and complete damage states. This is due to the fact that the IDA method can properly capture the structural response beyond yielding rather than the CSM and can directly calculate higher mode effects. From these observations, the CSM could overestimate seismic vulnerabilities of the studied structure in extensive or complete damage states. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seismic%20fragility%20curve" title="seismic fragility curve">seismic fragility curve</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=incremental%20dynamic%20analysis" title=" incremental dynamic analysis"> incremental dynamic analysis</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=capacity%20spectrum%20method" title=" capacity spectrum method"> capacity spectrum method</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=reinforced%20concrete%20moment%20frame" title=" reinforced concrete moment frame"> reinforced concrete moment frame</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/21652/seismic-fragility-functions-of-rc-moment-frames-using-incremental-dynamic-analyses" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/21652.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">422</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1970</span> Numerical Modeling of the Seismic Site Response in the Firenze Metropolitan Area</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Najmeh%20Ayoqi">Najmeh Ayoqi</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Emanuele%20Marchetti"> Emanuele Marchetti</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> OpenSWPC was used to model 2D and 3D seismic waveforms produced by various earthquakes in the Firenze metropolitan area. The signal-to-noise ratio of the data also highly determines quality of seismic data. This factor affects the reliability as well as the accuracy of seismic signal during interpretation for different purposes in different companies. To use seismic data for further application and interpretation, we need to improve the signal-to-noise ration while attenuating random noise effectively. To improve the signal-to-noise ration and attenuating seismic random noise by preserving important features and information about seismic signals, we introduce the concept of anisotropic total fractional order denoising algorithm. The anisotropic total fractional order variation model defined in fractional order bounded variation is proposed as a regularization in seismic denoising. The split Bregman algorithm is employed to solve the minimization problem of the anisotropic total fractional order variation model and the corresponding denoising algorithm for the proposed method is derived. We test the effectiveness of theproposed method for synthetic and real seismic data sets and the denoised result is compared with F-X deconvolution and non-local means denoising algorithm. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=anisotropic%20total%20fractional%20order%20variation" title="anisotropic total fractional order variation">anisotropic total fractional order variation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=fractional%20order%20bounded%20variation" title=" fractional order bounded variation"> fractional order bounded variation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seismic%20random%20noise%20attenuation" title=" seismic random noise attenuation"> seismic random noise attenuation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=split%20Bregman%20algorithm" title=" split Bregman algorithm"> split Bregman algorithm</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/77827/anisotropic-total-fractional-order-variation-model-in-seismic-data-denoising" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/77827.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">207</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1968</span> Statistical Physics Model of Seismic Activation Preceding a Major Earthquake</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Daniel%20S.%20Brox">Daniel S. A co-operation on an international scale is necessary for an exchange of information and experiments for the prevention and the installation of action plans in the countries prone to this phenomenon. For that, the 1990s was designated as 'International Decade for Natural Disaster Reduction (IDNDR)' by the United Nations, whose interest was to promote the capacity to resist the various natural, industrial and environmental disasters. Within this framework, it was launched in 1996, the RADIUS project (Risk Assessment Tools for Diagnosis of Urban Areas Against Seismic Disaster), whose the main objective is to mitigate seismic risk in developing countries, through the development of a simple and fast methodological and operational approach, allowing to evaluate the vulnerability as well as the socio-economic losses, by probable earthquake scenarios in the exposed urban areas. In this paper, we will present the adaptation and application of this methodology to the Algerian context for the seismic risk evaluation in urban areas potentially exposed to earthquakes. This application consists to perform an earthquake scenario in the urban centre of Constantine city, located at the North-East of Algeria, which will allow the building seismic damage estimation of this city. For that, an inventory of 30706 building units was carried out by the National Earthquake Engineering Research Centre (CGS). These buildings were digitized in a data base which comprises their technical information by using a Geographical Information system (GIS), and then they were classified according to the RADIUS methodology. The study area was subdivided into 228 meshes of 500m on side and Ten (10) sectors of which each one contains a group of meshes. The results of this earthquake scenario highlights that the ratio of likely damage is about 23%. This severe damage results from the high concentration of old buildings and unfavourable soil conditions. This simulation of the probable seismic damage of the building and the GIS damage maps generated provide a predictive evaluation of the damage which can occur by a potential earthquake near to Constantine city. These theoretical forecasts are important for decision makers in order to take the adequate preventive measures and to develop suitable strategies, prevention and emergency management plans to reduce these losses. They can also help to take the adequate emergency measures in the most impacted areas in the early hours and days after an earthquake occurrence. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seismic%20risk" title="seismic risk">seismic risk</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=mitigation" title=" mitigation"> mitigation</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=RADIUS" title=" RADIUS"> RADIUS</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=urban%20areas" title=" urban areas"> urban areas</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Algeria" title=" Algeria"> Algeria</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=earthquake%20scenario" title=" earthquake scenario"> earthquake scenario</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Constantine" title=" Constantine"> Constantine</a> </p> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/41307/urban-seismic-risk-reduction-in-algeria-adaptation-and-application-of-the-radius-methodology" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">Procedia</a> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/41307.pdf" target="_blank" class="btn btn-primary btn-sm">PDF</a> <span class="bg-info text-light px-1 py-1 float-right rounded"> Downloads <span class="badge badge-light">262</span> </span> </div> </div> <div class="card paper-listing mb-3 mt-3"> <h5 class="card-header" style="font-size:.9rem"><span class="badge badge-info">1965</span> Alternative Method of Determining Seismic Loads on Buildings Without Response Spectrum Application</h5> <div class="card-body"> <p class="card-text"><strong>Authors:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=Razmik%20Atabekyan">Razmik Atabekyan</a>, <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=V.%20Atabekyan"> V. Atabekyan</a> </p> <p class="card-text"><strong>Abstract:</strong></p> This article discusses a new alternative method for determination of seismic loads on buildings, based on resistance of structures to deformations of vibrations. The basic principles for determining seismic loads by spectral method were developed in 40… 50ies of the last century and further have been improved to pursuit true assessments of seismic effects. The base of the existing methods to determine seismic loads is response spectrum or dynamicity coefficient β (norms of RF), which are not definitively established. To this day there is no single, universal method for the determination of seismic loads and when trying to apply the norms of different countries, significant discrepancies between the results are obtained. On the other hand there is a contradiction of the results of macro seismic surveys of strong earthquakes with the principle of the calculation based on accelerations. It is well-known, on soft soils there is an increase of destructions (mainly due to large displacements), even though the accelerations decreases. Obviously, the seismic impacts are transmitted to the building through foundation, but paradoxically, the existing methods do not even include foundation data. Meanwhile acceleration of foundation of the building can differ several times from the acceleration of the ground. During earthquakes each building has its own peculiarities of behavior, depending on the interaction between the soil and the foundations, their dynamic characteristics and many other factors. In this paper we consider a new, alternative method of determining the seismic loads on buildings, without the use of response spectrum. The following main conclusions: 1) Seismic loads are revealed at the foundation level, which leads to redistribution and reduction of seismic loads on structures. 2) The proposed method is universal and allows determine the seismic loads without the use of response spectrum and any implicit coefficients. 3) The possibility of taking into account important factors such as the strength characteristics of the soils, the size of the foundation, the angle of incidence of the seismic ray and others. 4) Existing methods can adequately determine the seismic loads on buildings only for first form of vibrations, at an average soil conditions. <p class="card-text"><strong>Keywords:</strong> <a href="https://publications.waset.org/abstracts/search?q=seismic%20loads" title="seismic
