font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; color: #000;">As of Wednesday morning, these were the leading songs:</p> <p style="line-height: 18px; font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; Here Comes The Sun</strong></p> <p style="line-height: 18px; font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; color: #000;"><strong>2. In My Life</strong></p> <p style="line-height: 18px; font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; color: #000;"><strong>4. Come Together</strong></p> <p style="line-height: 18px; font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; color: #000;"><strong>6. With A Little Help From My Friends</strong></p> <p style="line-height: 18px; font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; color: #000;"><strong>7. Hey Jude</strong></p> <p style="line-height: 18px; font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; color: #000;"><strong>8. While My Guitar Gently Weeps</strong></p> <p style="line-height: 18px; font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; color: #000;"><strong>9. Twist & Shout (would probably be higher if combined with another version below)</strong></p> <p style="line-height: 18px; font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; color: #000;"><strong>10. Eleanor Rigby</strong><strong></strong></p> <p style="line-height: 18px; font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; color: #000;">As has radio in recent years, the list tends to default to mid-to-late period Beatles. It is led by one of the songs that has emerged as the group’s most enduring at radio, while “Come Together” has always benefited from being the song that Greatest Hits and Classic Rock formats can agree on, as well as feeling a little newer to people because of its 1978 Aerosmith remake. The only early Beatles title is “Twist & Shout,” which, of course, is actually a 1986 record to subsequent generations.</p> <p style="line-height: 18px; font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; color: #000;">Two of the top five Beatles songs – “In My Life” and “Blackbird” – aren’t radio mainstays. But there’s a definite lean on this list to not just balladry but songs that are practically elegiac. (“A Day In The Life” is right after “Eleanor Rigby.”) It will be interesting to see if the sales story moves some of those songs, “In My Life” particularly, back into station research at least, or if a sales story on an outlier title is as staunchly resisted as it is in other formats.</p> <p style="line-height: 18px; font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; color: #000;">Billboard only allows current titles to make the Hot 100, although the titles will be eligible for the Digital Songs Chart. So the Beatles won’t get a chance to go back ahead of “Glee” for the number of charted singles—a number that was distorted in the first place by the TV show’s ability to chart every song, not just physical singles. But the revenge would have been limited, several of this week’s passel of “Glee” tracks were ahead of even “Here Comes The Sun.” So was Willow (Smith’s) “Whip My Hair.”</p> <p style="line-height: 18px; font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; color: #000;"><strong></strong>There would have been one interesting historical rewrite. Joe Persek, recently namechecked in this column and the guy who started this discussion with an e-mail thread yesterday morning, points out that the Beatles would finally have had the biggest chart version of “Here Comes The Sun,” a distinction that will instead continue to go to Richie Havens.<br/> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20101203171611/mailto:rossonradio@in3media.com">comment <img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20101203171611im_/http://radio-info.com/in3_src/images/newsletter/ror/icon_comment.gif" alt="Comment" width="32" height="32" border="0" align="absbottom" target="Comment"></a></span></p> <!--End Story A--> <!--Story B Header--> <a name="StoryB"> <div> <h1 style="font-weight: bold; font-size: 22px; color: #1E2124; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; letter-spacing: -1px; line-height: 1.15em; display: block; padding-top: 8px; padding-bottom: 8px; margin-bottom: 15px; border-bottom: 3px double #EC6C33; border-top: 1px solid #EC6C33;">Racing To Share Control Of The Radio</h1> </div></a> <!--END Story B Header--> <!--Begin Story B--> <p style="line-height: 18px; font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; color: #000;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 12px; color: #D24608; text-transform: uppercase;">It was an interesting</span> sequence of announcements.</p> <img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20101203171611im_/http://radio-info.com/in3_src/images/newsletter/ror/logo_jelli.jpg" alt="Jelli logo" width="125" height="100" border="0" style="margin-right:10px; margin-top:6px;" align="left"> <p style="line-height: 18px; font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; color: #000;">At 3 p.m. on Monday afternoon (15), Jelli—the crowdsourced Internet radio station/syndicated program/Website—announced that <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20101203171611/http://94wysp.radio.com/">Classic Rock WYSP Philadelphia</a> was expanding its Jelli-based programming from Monday nights to its entire evening shift. In addition, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20101203171611/http://www.wpst.com/">Top 40 WPST Trenton/Philadelphia</a> would be switching its late night shift from the national “Jelli Pop” service to a “local, Philly-controlled program,” which will now be known on the air as “Real Time Radio”—notable since stations had been encouraged to use the national brand.</p> <img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20101203171611im_/http://radio-info.com/in3_src/images/newsletter/ror/logo_ldr-lrg.jpg" alt="Listener Driven Radio logo" width="125" height="100" border="0" style="margin-right:10px; margin-top:6px;" align="left"> <p style="line-height: 18px; font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; color: #000;">Less than three hours later, Clear Channel’s <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20101203171611/http://www.my1061.com/pages/mix-1061/">WISX (My 106.1) Philadelphia</a> made its own announcement. Besides segueing from Rhythmic Hot AC to a more traditional Hot AC as Mix 106.1, the station was going to use rival Listener Driven Radio and rebrand its 9 a.m-5 p.m. programming as “Mix Control,” starting today. (Interestingly, the Noon-7 p.m. host on Mix is the Detroit-based Jay Towers, which will add an additional wrinkle to being interactive.)</p> <p style="line-height: 18px; font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; color: #000;">The crowding of the crowd-sourcing releases brought to mind the late ‘80s when, for a few frantic months, Top 40 radio stations suddenly discovered the “Yes/No Radio” concept that, until then, had been best known as the calling card for the San Jose and Orange County, Calif., radio stations of maverick AC programmer Bill Weaver. </p> <p style="line-height: 18px; font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; color: #000;">These announcements were for the industry, not listeners, but the race to get them out suggests that interactivity has again become a place where some broadcasters wish to engage with Internet pureplays. Over the last five years, broadcasters have sometimes rushed to get listener playlists on the air and other times thrown their hands up and decided their role was as curators. And as with the growth of Talk radio on AM two decades ago, it also shows how much easier it is to do something when there’s a syndicated asset available.</p> <p style="line-height: 18px; font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; color: #000;">We’ll take a listen to Mix 106.1 (and a Fresh Listen to WPST’s crowdsourced show) in Monday’s edition of our new AC/Hot AC/Adult Top 40 newsletter, “25+.” If you’re not receiving “25+” yet and you’d like to (or if you’re not getting Ross On Radio directly), <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20101203171611/mailto:rossonradio@in3media.com">just e-mail me.</a></p> <p style="line-height: 18px; font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; color: #000;"><strong><em>(Disclosure: Listener Driven Radio’s Daniel Anstandig is also the author of Radio-Info’s Radio 3-D newsletter.)</em></strong><br/> <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20101203171611/mailto:rossonradio@in3media.com">comment <img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20101203171611im_/http://radio-info.com/in3_src/images/newsletter/ror/icon_comment.gif" alt="Comment" width="32" height="32" border="0" align="absbottom" target="Comment"></a></span></p> <!--End Story B--> <!--Readers on Radio Header--> <div style="display: block; padding-top: 8px; padding-bottom: 8px; margin-bottom: 15px; margin-top: 15px; border-bottom: 1px solid #666; border-top: 1px solid #666;"><a name="StoryC" id="StoryC"> <span style="font-weight: bold; font-size: 20px; color: #1E2124; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; text-transform: uppercase; line-height: 1.15em;">Readers on radio</span></a><br> <span style="font-style:italic; font-size: 19px; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; line-height: 1.25em; color: #D24608">Staying Current Or Moving On, The Final Provocation</span></div> <!--END Readers on Radio Header--> <!--Begin Readers on Radio--> <p style="line-height: 18px; font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; color: #000;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 12px; color: #D24608; text-transform: uppercase;"> “The only reason </span>I <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20101203171611/http://www.radio-info.com/newsletter/html/ror-11092010.html">stay current</a> is so I can act as a filter for some of the utter garbage that is being pushed upon our youth as music. But it’s still a nice vote of confidence for radio to have him back in the forefront, as evidenced by the publicity his announcement has generated.</p> <h5 style="margin: 0; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; line-height: 18px; color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold;">Greatest Uneasiness</h5> <p style="margin: 0 0 10px 0; font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 18px; color: #000; font-size: 11px;"><strong>Waiting For The Q4 Personnel Cuts</strong> – For the last few years, the end of the year has been like watching Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” unfold in our business, with jobs (and sometimes careers) randomly selected for elimination. And although the survivors try to reassure themselves otherwise, it’s often only the luck of the draw that seems to stand between those who still have a career and those who don’t. So one can only hope that the “up-from-the-bottom” optimism of 2010 carries us through the holiday season as well. </p> <h5 style="margin: 0; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; line-height: 18px; color: #000000; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold;">FM Station</h5> <img src="https://web.archive.org/web/20101203171611im_/http://radio-info.com/in3_src/images/newsletter/ror/logo_curve943-sml.jpg" alt="CHIQ (Curve 94.3) Winnipeg logo" width="125" height="60" border="0" style="margin-right:10px; margin-top:6px;" align="left"> <p style="margin: 0 0 10px 0; font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; line-height: 18px; color: #000; font-size: 11px;"><strong><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20101203171611/http://www.curve943.com/">CHIQ (Curve 94.3) Winnipeg</a></strong> – Their Alternative/Top 40 hybrid has expanded a little bit in both directions—more “Gen-X Radio”-type ‘90s and more Mainstream CHR product.
