It was one of those motivational emails some folks enjoy spamming their family and loved ones with. I rarely open those kinds of messages; however, for some reason I peeked at this one. It was about a mother giving unasked-for advice to her recently married daughter and—as my daughter is about to be married—it spoke to me. The essence of the advice was, <em><strong>pay special attention to your sisters</strong></em>, with “sisters” defined as girlfriends, daughters, granddaughters, daughters-in-law, sisters, sisters-in-law, mothers, grandmothers, aunties, nieces, cousins, and extended family.</p> <p>When I read the message I thought of all the women in my life who have played significant and/or supporting roles and I was reminded of one woman in particular, the late <strong>Lieutenant Governor Lois Hole</strong>, who continues to play an important role in women’s lives through the legacy of the <a title="Lois Hole Hospital for Women Homepage" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://www.loisholehospital.com/" target="_blank"><strong>Lois Hole Hospital for Women</strong></a>, which is scheduled to open later this year.</p> <p>However, Mrs. Hole’s good will and good works was not limited to the female of the species and the <a title="Lois Hole Library Legacy Program" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://visityourlibrary.net/lhllp/index.html" target="_blank"><strong>Lois Hole Library Legacy Program</strong></a> is a reflection of her unstinting advocacy of education and literacy. This special program will help perpetuate Mrs. Hole’s exemplary support of libraries across Alberta by encouraging like-minded individuals to approach a participating library of their choice and tailor a donation to best benefit the community.</p> <p><a title="Staff at the University of Alberta Press" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://www.uap.ualberta.ca/UAP.asp?lid=12" target="_blank"><strong>The University of Alberta Press team</strong></a> holds a special place in their hearts for Lois Hole and we were, therefore, delighted earlier this year to publish <a title="Words that Matter at the University of Alberta Press" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://www.uap.ualberta.ca/UAP.asp?lid=41&bookid=730" target="_blank"><em><strong>Lois Hole Speaks: Words that Matter</strong></em></a>. I recently saw such a movie, <a title="The Savages from Fox Searchlight" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://www.foxsearchlight.com/thesavages/" target="_blank"><em><strong>The Savages</strong></em></a>, directed by <strong>Tamara Jenkins</strong> and starring <strong>Laura Linney</strong> as Wendy, <strong>Philip Seymour Hoffman</strong> as her brother, Jon, and <strong>Philip Bosco</strong> and their elderly father, Lenny, who is descending into the bottomless pit of dementia.</p> <p>The family was never a happy one and Wendy and Jon have both gone their separate ways and have not seen their abusive father for years when they are called upon to deal with his sudden homelessness (his aged girlfriend dies). Despite their unresolved anger toward their father for his earlier treatment, they take on the burden of care, which in this case is placing him in a nursing home.</p> <div id="attachment_164" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 165px"><a title="Dianne Godkin's Living Will, Living Well at the University of Alberta Press" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://www.uap.ualberta.ca/UAP.asp?lid=41&bookid=566" target="_blank"><img class="size-full wp-image-164" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402im_/http://holeinthebucket.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/233.jpg?w=155&h=233" alt="Reflections on Preparing an Advance Directive by Dianne Godkin" width="155" height="233"/></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Living Will, Living Well: Reflections on Preparing an Advance Directive by Dianne Godkin</p></div> <p>I found one scene in the film particularly poignant. It takes place in a diner where Wendy and Jon are attempting to have a conversation with Lenny about an <a title="advance health care directive on Wikipedia" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advance_directive" target="_blank"><strong>advance directive</strong></a> (living will). Wendy is struggling with the conversation and is confusing Lenny as she is reluctant to ask direct questions: <em>what do you want us to do with your body when you die and do you want to be maintained on life support?</em> Jon has much less trouble expressing himself, and when he sees Lenny does not understand Wendy’s approach he says something like <em>Do you want us to pull the plug?</em></p> <p>These are real issues for real people and through our work with clinical ethicist Dianne Godkin we are trying to help people deal with these emotional topics. While the University of Alberta Press was preparing to publish her book, <a title="Dianne Godkin's Living Will, Living Well at the University of Alberta Press" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://www.uap.ualberta.ca/UAP.asp?lid=41&bookid=566" target="_blank"><em><strong>Living Will, Living Well: Reflections on Preparing an Advance Directive</strong></em></a>, I sat with Dianne and we talked about her motivation for writing the book.</p> <p>She said that one of the most difficult aspects of her work and those of other medical professionals is dealing with family when there have not been any conversations prior to either life-support decisions or death for a cherished family member. Everyone is in a highly emotional state and it is tough to make important decisions. Often, in addition to grief, there is anger and hurt feelings just when people need each other the most. However, there is a way to mitigate the stress: <strong>Communication among family members in advance</strong> can help to ensure a person’s wishes are honoured and those left behind can feel some solace in having eased the mind of their loved one.</p> <p>There is no Hollywood happy ending in <strong><em>The Savages</em></strong>; however, there is some healing and closure. I recommend the film for its complexity, humanity, and truthfulness.</p> <p>~ <a title="Linda Cameron, Director, UAP" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://www.uap.ualberta.ca/UAP.asp?lid=12" target="_blank">Linda</a></p> </div> <p class="postinfo"> Filed under: <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://wordpress.com/tag/new-books/" title="View all posts in New Books" rel="category tag">New Books</a> | Tagged: <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://wordpress.com/tag/advance-directive/" rel="tag">advance directive</a>, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://wordpress.com/tag/advance-health-care-directive/" rel="tag">advance health care directive</a>, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://wordpress.com/tag/dianne-godkin/" rel="tag">dianne godkin</a>, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://wordpress.com/tag/fox/" rel="tag">Fox</a>, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://wordpress.com/tag/laura-linney/" rel="tag">Laura Linney</a>, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://wordpress.com/tag/living-will/" rel="tag">living will</a>, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://wordpress.com/tag/philip-bosco/" rel="tag">Philip Bosco</a>, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://wordpress.com/tag/philip-seymour-hoffman/" rel="tag">Philip Seymour Hoffman</a>, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://wordpress.com/tag/searchlight/" rel="tag">Searchlight</a>, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://wordpress.com/tag/tamara-jenkins/" rel="tag">Tamara Jenkins</a>, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://wordpress.com/tag/the-savages/" rel="tag">The Savages</a> | <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://holeinthebucket.wordpress.com/2008/07/22/nothing-savage-about-planning-an-advance-directive/#respond" title="Comment on Nothing savage about planning an advance directive…">No Comments »</a> </p> </div> </div> <div class="post hentry category-news tag-dressed-to-rule tag-fu-shiang-chia tag-airs-of-the-states tag-9789574452392 tag-bookman-books tag-chinese-poetry tag-chinese-english-poetry tag-shi-jing tag-mactaggart tag-brilliant-strokes tag-algal-bowl tag-cultural-eutrophication tag-ka-bo-tsang tag-john-vollmer tag-david-schindler tag-john-vallentyne tag-limnology tag-nutrient-pollution tag-lyric-poetry tag-museum tag-university-of-alberta-museums tag-%e2%80%9cairs-of-the-states%e2%80%9d-from-the-shi-jing-a-new-trili" id="post-156"> <h2><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://holeinthebucket.wordpress.com/2008/07/14/a-visit-and-a-book-from-a-good-friend-of-the-press/" rel="bookmark" title="A visit and a book from a good friend of the Press">A visit and a book from a good friend of the Press</a></h2> <div class="postinfo"> Posted on <span class="postdate">July 14, 2008</span> by lcameron </div> <div class="entry"> <div class="snap_preview"><div id="attachment_157" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 136px"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://www.bookman.com.tw/BookDetail.aspx?bokno=10008218" target="_blank"><img class="size-full wp-image-157" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402im_/http://holeinthebucket.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/airsofthestates9789574452392.jpg?w=126&h=177" alt="A New Trilingual Translation of the World’s Oldest Collection of Lyric Poetry" width="126" height="177"/></a><p class="wp-caption-text">Fu-Shiang Chia's “Airs of the States” from the Shi Jing: A New Trilingual Translation of the World’s Oldest Collection of Lyric Poetry</p></div> <p>Today I had the pleasure of a visit from <strong>Fu-Shiang Chia</strong>, professor emeritus of biology, University of Alberta, who presented me with an autographed copy of his new book <a title="A New Trilingual Translation of the World’s Oldest Collection of Lyric Poetry" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://www.bookman.com.tw/BookDetail.aspx?bokno=10008218" target="_blank"><strong><em>“Airs of the States” from the </em>Shi Jing<em>: A New Trilingual Translation of the World’s Oldest Collection of Lyric Poetry</em></strong></a>.</p> <p>I first met Professor Chia several years ago shortly after <strong>Cécile</strong> and <strong>Sandy Mactaggart</strong> presented the University of Alberta with <a title="The Mactaggart Art Collection" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://www.museums.mactaggart.ualberta.ca/mac/index.aspx" target="_blank">an astonishing collection of East Asian art and textiles</a>, the single most costly gift to the University of Alberta, ever. In 2006 I was privileged to be invited to visit Fu-Shiang and his artist-wife, Sharon, at their lovely hilltop home on Salt Spring Island. It is easy to see how Fu-Shiang could be inspired to interpret and translate <em><strong>“Airs of the States”</strong></em> from that location.</p> <p>Fu-Shiang has been working on the translation for many years and found great joy in interpreting the 3,000 year old poems in modern Chinese and English. It is a fabulous gift to contemporary Chinese people and to westerners to have access to the poems in this manner.</p> <p>In the preface Fu-Shiang refers to the great sage, <em>Rien-Yu</em>, who centuries ago told his students the <a title="Shi Jing defined at Wikipedia" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shi_Jing" target="_blank"><em>Shi Jing</em></a> has three functions:</p> <ol> <li><em>to help us to think, to observe, to live with others and to make good judgments;</em></li> <li><em>to help us to respect our parents and the state; and,</em></li> <li><em>to help us to learn the names of birds, beasts, grasses and trees.</em></li> </ol> <p>In particular Fu-Shiang hopes to ensure his interpretation will accomplish the first two of the <em>Shi Jing</em> functions and revitalize our interest in the third function, “to help us to learn the names of birds, beasts, grasses and trees.” Why is this so important? Because as Fu-Shiang tells us “…there is almost no art which can be divorced from the natural world…. We need biodiversity. Nature’s creatures are necessary for humanity’s survival, and birds, beasts, grasses and trees are our soul, as they are the soul of the <em>Shi Jing</em> and the blood of 3,000 years of literature.”</p> <div id="attachment_158" class="wp-caption alignright" style="width: 136px"><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://www.uap.ualberta.ca/UAP.asp?lid=41&bookid=635" target="_blank"><img class="size-full wp-image-158" src="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402im_/http://holeinthebucket.files.wordpress.com/2008/07/algalbowl126.jpg?w=126&h=189" alt="Overfertilization of the World’s Freshwaters and Estuaries by David W. The University of Alberta Press will soon release an important book concerning the threat to water quality worldwide, entitled <a title="Overfertilization of the World’s Freshwaters and Estuaries by David W. circumstances a garden party turned indoors due to rain might be disappointing. Such was not the case on Sunday, June 22, when the celebration to launch the University of Alberta Press, Gutteridge Books imprint book <a title="Illuminating the Alberta Order of Excellence, a UAP Gutteridge Book" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://www.uap.ualberta.ca/UAP.asp?LID=41&bookID=789" target="_blank"><em>Illuminating the Alberta Order of Excellence</em></a> took shelter in <a title="Alberta's Government House located in Edmonton" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://www.assembly.ab.ca/lao/library/lt-gov/house.htm" target="_blank">Government House</a>. Master of Ceremonies and Chair of the Alberta Order of Excellence, Dr. Robert Westbury, welcomed the Lieutenant Governor, <a title="Alberta's Lieutenant Governor, The Honourable Norman L. The Alberta Order of Excellence is the highest honour the Province of Alberta can bestow on a citizen.</p> <p>Members of the Alberta Order of Excellence come from all walks of life. Their careers range from medicine, science, engineering, law, and business to politics, education, agriculture and the arts. The one thing all members have in common is that they have made an outstanding provincial, national, or international impact.</p> <p><a title="The Alberta Order of Excellence online" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://www.lieutenantgovernor.ab.ca/aoe/" target="_blank">The Alberta Order of Excellence</a> is about more than simply doing one’s job well. It’s about Albertans who have made a difference, who have served fellow Albertans with excellence and distinction, and whose contributions will stand the test of time.</p> <p>Also in attendance were <a title="Cora Healy-Tobin's bio on the University of Alberta Press website" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://www.uap.ualberta.ca/UAP.asp?lid=42&bookid=789" target="_blank">Cora Healy-Tobin</a> whose artistry adorns each of the personalized scrolls presented to AOE awardees and which is featured in the book, and Allison Sivak whose essay about Healy-Tobin appears in the book. Dr. Carl Amrhein, Provost and Vice-President (Academic) delivered greetings and congratulations on behalf of the University.</p> <p>It was a thrill to be among so many Albertans who have, through the example of their lives and work, made this province a special place.</p> <p>Publication of <a title="Purchase Illuminating the Alberta Order of Excellence online" The work of Access Copyright is licensing reprographic rights, collecting royalties for those licenses and distributing the royalties to the copyright owners, creators and publishers.</p> <p>Access Copyright has been licensing reprography rights since the 1980s and is entering its 20th year. Access Copyright works with copyright owners across Canada and around the world. He joined our freelance editor, Paul Payson, as they waited to hear the results of the jury’s deliberations on the Tom Fairley Award. We were all very excited to see two of “our people” being recognized on the shortlist for this important award.</p> <p>In the end, Peter received an Honourable Mention for his work on <em>Culturing Wilderness in Jasper National Park</em>. Paul Payson had already won the Lois Hole Award for Editorial Excellence at the Alberta publishing awards gala, for honing Don McPhail’s<em> The Freshwater Fishes of British Columbia</em>. We are so pleased to see Peter and Paul’s passion and intensity rewarded by their peers. So, instead of simply organizing catalogues, designing order forms, producing signage, selecting books, and arranging shipping, I came to the conference for two days. This is the fourth Congress I’ve attended, and as usual, I found it a rewarding experience. I appreciate the opportunity to talk to scholars in various disciplines, to see the depth and scope of books being published, and to share ideas and stories with my peers.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-CA">I particularly enjoyed meeting colleagues from <a title="Wilfrid Laurier University Press blog" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://nestor.wlu.ca/blog/" target="_blank">Wilfrid Laurier University Press</a> (Lisa Quinn, Leslie Macredie, and Clare Hitchens) and Canadian Scholars Press (Rick Walker). It was great to re-connect with David Carr and Cheryl Miki of the <a title="University of Manitoba Press" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://www.umanitoba.ca/uofmpress/" target="_blank">University of Manitoba</a>—who were celebrating 40 years of publishing—and Brian Mlazgar of Canadian Plains Research Centre.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-CA">It was delightful to host author Gloria Mehlmann and chat over lunch at Sage Café and to meet her husband, Peter. (Boy, do I ever recommend this on-campus restaurant, despite the drilling and pounding of the contractors working one floor below.) The food, service, and view were all exemplary. Gloria was so pleased to see a mock-up of her forthcoming book on display: <a title="Gloria Mehlmann's Gifted to Learn, due out very soon" href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://www.uap.ualberta.ca/UAP.asp?lid=41&bookid=740" target="_blank"><em>Gifted to Learn</em></a>.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-CA">I also had a chance to catch up with one of my favourite marketing associates from a few years back, Laraine Coates, who left University of Alberta Press to take a Masters in Publishing—and has stayed on in Vancouver with Pacific Educational Press. And I was fortunate to overlap for a morning with a good friend, Catherine Edwards, who I first met when we both worked for Weigl Educational Publishers in Regina. She is a gifted publisher—a triple-threat editor, administrator, and sales person—and one of the brightest people I know.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal">Next year, Congress will be in Ottawa. Hmm…</p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-CA">*Each spring, the <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20080925135402/http://www.fedcan.ca/congress2008">Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Science Annual Congress</a> acts as an umbrella for dozens of scholarly societies to come together and share conference resources; a meta-conference. While imperfect, it allows publishers and others an opportunity to interact with several thousand scholars in a wide arrange of disciplines over six to ten days of meetings.</span></p>
