Burbano earned his Ph.D. in media arts and technology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. His book “Different Engines: Media Technologies from Latin America” is a substantial publication released by Routledge in 2023. Throughout his career, Dr. Burbano has engaged in research projects funded by reputable organizations, including NatGeo, NSF, IDRC, NASA, and Universidad de los Andes. His academic work has been recognized through distinctions by organizations such as Fulbright and the DAAD. He serves as the co-editor-in-chief of Artnodes, a diamond open-access journal acknowledged as Q1 by Scopus. He creates software, systems, and spaces through experimental research in the overlapping areas of new formats, network dynamics, and virtual architectures with a focus on audio and transmission. His activities tend to evoke themes of power, migration, play, noise, chance, and operate under methods of collaboration, commons-building, and communal interaction. He’s been a team member of organizations such as the ORF Kunstradio, the Ars Electronica Futurelab, the UCSB BioImaging Lab, and Cycling ’74 — the makers of Max/MSP. He’s shown works at places such as Dutch Electronic Arts Festival, Ars Electronica, Wave Farm, and TSONAMI Festival de Arte Sonoro, among others. Her past work includes the visual identity for a nonprofit that builds water projects in Uganda; set graphics and promotional work for an experimental theatre group; and real-time graphics animation for Slimetime NFL games. Her graphics related work has transitioned from writing computer vision applications for Duke Med School’s Electrophysiology Lab to creating data materializations with Courtney Starrett at Texas A&M’s VIVID Lab. His projects have led to many academic contributions and awards. He has also curated more than 30 exhibitions in institutions, including the American Institute of Architecture (NYC), the Royal College of Art (London), and the Musée des Arts décoratifs in Paris and Harvard University. He’s the co-founder of GAMI Global Alliance for Media Innovation and has been honored as a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French minister for culture and communication. Trained as an architect, he earned his Ph.D. in design computation from MIT, a master’s in architecture from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, and a bachelor of architecture from Hampton University. In his research, he continues to investigate both virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technology to find ways these tools can expand the way we work, play, and learn. His most recent VR project, “Barnstormers,” was shown at the 2022 Cannes XR. Interactive structures embed functionality within their geometry such that they can react to simple input with complex behavior. Such structures enable materials that can, e.g., embed robotic movement, perform computations, or communicate with users. Her lab develops optimization-based interactive design tools that enable novices to contribute their creativity and experts to apply their intuition in order to foster the advancement of high-tech materials. Her work is published at and awarded by top-tier HCI (ACM CHI & UIST) and graphics venues (ACM SIGGRAPH). It was invited for multiple exhibitions, including a permanent exhibition at the Ars Electronica Center in Austria. Her career has balanced experience in industry and education, including roles as lead software engineer at Raytheon, where she led the graphics algorithm team building a cutting-edge image analysis system for remote sensing, and as expert for intellectual property consulting related to halftoning with blue noise, display drivers and image processing. Committed to arts-centered engineering education, she has held Program Director roles in K-12 schools and museums to develop innovative curriculum and teacher training programs, including story-centered engineering through animatronics. She has been on the editorial board of IEEE Computer Graphics has several publications spanning the areas of halftoning, remote sensing and machine learning, and engineering education. Active as a volunteer with ACM SIGGRAPH since 2013, she served as Chair of the Education Committee and as 2019 and 2020 General Submission Chair before stepping into her current role as 2025
