And they kept<MH2790b> silent<MH2790b> all<MH3605> night<MH3915>, saying<MH559>, “<i>Let’s wait</i> until<MH5704> the morning<MH1242> light<MH216>, then we will kill<MH2026> him.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>Now Samson<MH8123> lay<MH7901> <i>asleep</i> until<MH5704> midnight<MH2677, 3915>, and at midnight<MH2677, 3915> he got<MH6965> up<MH6965> and took<MH270> hold<MH270> of the doors<MH1817> of the city<MH5892b> gate<MH8179> and the two<MH8147> doorposts<MH4201>, and pulled<MH5265> them up<MH5265> along<MH5973> with<MH5973> the bars<MH1280>; then he put<MH7760> <i>them</i> on his shoulders<MH3802>, and carried<MH5927> them up<MH5927> to the top<MH7218> of the mountain<MH2022> which<MH834> is opposite<MH5921, 6440> Hebron<MH2275a>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>After<MH310> this<MH3651> it came<MH1961> about<MH1961> that he was in love<MH157> with a woman<MH802> in the Valley<MH5158a> of Sorek<MH7796a>, whose name<MH8034> was Delilah<MH1807>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>So the governors<MH5633a> of the Philistines<MH6430> came<MH5927> up<MH5927> to her and said<MH559> to her, “Entice<MH6601b> him, and see<MH7200> where<MH4100> his great<MH1419> strength<MH3581b> <i>lies</i> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>how<MH4100> we can overpower<MH3201> him so that we may bind<MH631> him to humble<MH6031a> him. Then we will each<MH376> give<MH5414> you 1,100<MH505, 3967> <i>pieces</i> of silver<MH3701>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>So Delilah<MH1807> said<MH559> to Samson<MH8123>, “Please<MH4994> tell<MH5046> me where<MH4100> your great<MH1419> strength<MH3581b> <i>lies,</i> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>how<MH4100> you can be bound<MH631> to humble<MH6031a> you.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>And Samson<MH8123> said<MH559> to her, “If<MH518> they bind<MH631> me with seven<MH7651> fresh<MH3892> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span><i>animal</i> tendons<MH3499b> that have not been dried<MH2717a>, then I will become<MH2470a> weak<MH2470a> and be like any<MH259> <i>other</i> man<MH120>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Then the governors<MH5633a> of the Philistines<MH6430> brought<MH5927> up<MH5927> to her seven<MH7651> fresh<MH3892> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span><i>animal</i> tendons<MH3499b> that had not been dried<MH2717a>, and she bound<MH631> him with them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Now she had<MH3427> <i>men</i> prepared<MH3427, 693> for<MH693> an<MH693> ambush<MH693> in an inner<MH2315> room<MH2315>. And she said<MH559> to him, “The Philistines<MH6430> are upon you, Samson<MH8123>!” But he tore<MH5423> the tendons<MH3499b> to<MH5423> pieces<MH5423> just<MH3512c> like<MH3512c> a thread<MH6616> of flax<MH5296> is torn<MH5423> apart<MH5423> when it <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>comes<MH7381a> too<MH7381a> close<MH7381a> to<MH7381a> fire<MH784>. So his strength<MH3581b> was not discovered<MH3045>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Then Delilah<MH1807> said<MH559> to Samson<MH8123>, “Behold<MH2009>, you have toyed<MH8524> with me and told<MH1696> me lies<MH3577>; now<MH6258> please<MH4994> tell<MH5046> me <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>how<MH4100> you may be bound<MH631>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then He said<MH559> to her, “If<MH518> they bind<MH631> me tightly<MH631> with new<MH2319> ropes<MH5688> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>which<MH834> have not been used<MH6213a, 4399>, then I will become<MH2470a> weak<MH2470a> and be like any<MH259> <i>other</i> man<MH120>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>So Delilah<MH1807> took<MH3947> new<MH2319> ropes<MH5688> and bound<MH631> him with them and said<MH559> to him, “The Philistines<MH6430> are upon you, Samson<MH8123>!” For the <i>men</i> in the ambush<MH693> <i>were</i> waiting<MH3427> in the inner<MH2315> room<MH2315>. But he tore<MH5423> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>the ropes from his arms<MH2220> like thread<MH2339>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Then Delilah<MH1807> said<MH559> to Samson<MH8123>, “Up to now<MH2008> you have toyed<MH8524> with me and told<MH1696> me lies<MH3577>; tell<MH5046> me <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>how<MH4100> you may be bound<MH631>.” And he said<MH559> to her, “If<MH518> you weave<MH707> the seven<MH7651> locks<MH4253> of my <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>hair<MH7218> with the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>web<MH4545> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>[and fasten it with the pin, then I will be weak like any <i>other</i> man.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>So while he slept, Delilah wove the seven locks of his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>hair with the web]. And she fastened<MH8628> <i>it</i> with the pin<MH3489> and said<MH559> to him, “The Philistines<MH6430> are upon you, Samson<MH8123>!” But he awoke<MH3364> from his sleep<MH8142> and pulled<MH5265> out<MH5265> the pin<MH3489> of the loom<MH708> and the web<MH4545>. <p class="hdg">Delilah Extracts His Secret</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Then she said<MH559> to him, “How<MH349> can you say<MH559>, ‘I love<MH157> you,’ when your heart<MH3820> is not with me? You have toyed<MH8524> with me these<MH2088> three<MH7969> times<MH6471> and have not told<MH5046> me where<MH4100> your great<MH1419> strength<MH3581b> is.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>And it came<MH1961> about<MH1961>, when<MH3588> she pressed<MH6693> him daily<MH3117> with her words<MH1697> and urged<MH509> him, that his soul<MH5315> was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>annoyed<MH7114a> to death<MH4191>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>So he told<MH5046> her all<MH3605> <i>that was in</i> his heart<MH3820> and said<MH559> to her, “A razor<MH4177a> has never<MH3808> come<MH5927> on my head<MH7218>, for I have been a Nazirite<MH5139> to God<MH430> from my mother’s<MH517> womb<MH990>. If<MH518> I am shaved<MH1548>, then my strength<MH3581b> will leave<MH5493, 4480> me and I will become<MH2470a> weak<MH2470a> and be like any<MH3605> <i>other</i> man<MH120>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>When Delilah<MH1807> saw<MH7200> that he had told<MH5046> her all<MH3605> <i>that was in</i> his heart<MH3820>, she sent<MH7971> <i>word</i> and called<MH7121> the governors<MH5633a> of the Philistines<MH6430>, saying<MH559>, “Come<MH5927> up<MH5927> once<MH6471> more<MH6471>, for he has told<MH5046> me all<MH3605> <i>that is in</i> his heart<MH3820>.” Then the governors<MH5633a> of the Philistines<MH6430> came<MH5927> up<MH5927> to her and brought<MH5927> up<MH5927> the money<MH3701> in their hands<MH3027>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And she made him sleep<MH3462> on her knees<MH1290>, and called<MH7121> for a man<MH376> and had him shave<MH1548> off<MH1548> the seven<MH7651> locks<MH4253> of his head<MH7218>. Then she began<MH2490c> to humble<MH6031a> him, and his strength<MH3581b> left<MH5493> him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>She said<MH559>, “The Philistines<MH6430> are upon you, Samson<MH8123>!” And he awoke<MH3364> from his sleep<MH8142> and said<MH559>, “I will go<MH3318> out<MH3318> as at other<MH6471> times<MH6471> and shake<MH5287> myself free<MH5287>.” But he did not know<MH3045> that the LORD<MH3068> had departed<MH5493> from him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Then the Philistines<MH6430> seized<MH270> him and gouged<MH5365> out<MH5365> his eyes<MH5869>; and they brought<MH3381> him down<MH3381> to Gaza<MH5804a> and restrained<MH631> him with bronze<MH5178> chains<MH5178>, and he became<MH1961> a grinder<MH2912> in the prison<MH1004, 631>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>However, the hair<MH8181> of his head<MH7218> began<MH2490c> to grow<MH6779> <i>again</i> after<MH3512c> it was shaved<MH1548> off<MH1548>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>Now the governors<MH5633a> of the Philistines<MH6430> assembled<MH622> to offer<MH2076> a great<MH1419> sacrifice<MH2077> to Dagon<MH1712> their god<MH430>, and to celebrate<MH8057>, for they said<MH559>, <p class="indent1stline">“Our god<MH430> has handed<MH5414, 3027> Samson<MH8123> our enemy<MH340> over<MH5414> to us.” <A><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>When the people<MH5971a> saw<MH7200> him, they praised<MH1984b> their god<MH430>, for they said<MH559>, <p class="indent1stline">“Our god<MH430> has handed<MH5414, 3027> our enemy<MH340> over<MH5414> to us, <t><p class="indent1">Even the destroyer<MH2717b> of our country<MH776>, <t><p class="indent1">Who<MH834> has killed<MH2491a> many<MH7235a> of us.” <A><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>It so happened<MH1961> when <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>they were in high<MH2895> spirits<MH3820>, that they said<MH559>, “Call<MH7121> for Samson<MH8123>, that he may amuse<MH7832> us.” So they called<MH7121> for Samson<MH8123> from the prison<MH1004, 631>, and he <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>entertained<MH6711, 6440> them. And they made him stand<MH5975> between<MH996> the pillars<MH5982>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Then Samson<MH8123> said<MH559> to the boy<MH5288> who was holding<MH2388> his hand<MH3027>, “<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>Let<MH5117> me feel<MH4184> the pillars<MH5982> on which<MH834> the house<MH1004> rests<MH3559>, so that I may lean<MH8172> against<MH5921> them.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>Now the house<MH1004> was full<MH4390> of men<MH376> and women<MH802>, and all<MH3605> the governors<MH5633a> of the Philistines<MH6430> were there<MH8033>. And about three<MH7969> thousand<MH505> men<MH376> and women<MH802> were on the roof<MH1406> looking<MH7200> on while Samson<MH8123> was entertaining<MH7832> <i>them.</i> <p class="hdg">Samson Is Avenged</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Then Samson<MH8123> called<MH7121> to the LORD<MH3068> and said<MH559>, “Lord<MH136> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>GOD<MH3068>, please<MH4994> remember<MH2142> me and please<MH4994> strengthen<MH2388> me just<MH389> this<MH2088> time<MH6471>, O God<MH430>, that I may at once<MH259> take vengeance<MH5358> on the Philistines<MH6430> for my two<MH8147> eyes<MH5869>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>Then Samson<MH8123> grasped<MH3943> the two<MH8147> middle<MH8432> pillars<MH5982> on which<MH834> the house<MH1004> rested<MH3559>, and braced<MH5564> himself against<MH5921> them, the one<MH259> with his right<MH3225> hand<MH3225> and the other<MH259> with his left<MH8040>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>And Samson<MH8123> said<MH559>, “Let <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>me die<MH4191> with the Philistines<MH6430>!” And he pushed<MH5186> outwards<MH5186> powerfully<MH3581b>, so that the house<MH1004> fell<MH5307> on the governors<MH5633a> and all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> who<MH834> were in it. And the dead<MH4191> whom<MH834> he killed<MH4191> at his death<MH4194> were more<MH7227a> than<MH4480> those whom<MH834> he killed<MH4191> during his lifetime<MH2425b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/judges/16-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Then his brothers<MH251> and all<MH3605> his father’s<MH1> household<MH1004> came<MH3381> down<MH3381> and took<MH5375> him, and brought<MH5927> him up<MH5927> and buried<MH6912> him between<MH996> Zorah<MH6881> and Eshtaol<MH847b> in the tomb<MH6913> of his father<MH1> Manoah<MH4495>.
