Therefore, offer<MH5375> a prayer<MH8605> for the remnant<MH7611> that is <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>left<MH4672>.&#8217;&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>So the servants<MH5650> of King<MH4428> Hezekiah<MH2396> came<MH935> to Isaiah<MH3470b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>And Isaiah<MH3470b> said<MH559> to them, &#8220;This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> you shall say<MH559> to your master<MH113>: &#8216;The LORD<MH3068> says<MH559> this<MH3541>: &#8220;Do not be<MH3372a> fearful<MH3372a> because<MH4480, 6440> of the words<MH1697> that you have heard<MH8085>, with which<MH834> the servants<MH5288> of the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b> have blasphemed<MH1442> Me. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Behold<MH2009>, I am going to put<MH5414> a spirit<MH7307> in him so that he will hear<MH8085> news<MH8052> and return<MH7725> to his own land<MH776>. And I will make him fall<MH5307> by the sword<MH2719> in his own land<MH776>.&#8221;&#8217;&#8221; <p class="hdg">Sennacherib Defies God</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Then Rabshakeh<MH7262> returned<MH7725> and found<MH4672> the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b> fighting<MH3898a> against<MH5921> Libnah<MH3841>, for he had heard<MH8085> that <i>the king</i> had left<MH5265> Lachish<MH3923>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>When he heard<MH8085> <i>them</i> say<MH559> about<MH413> Tirhakah<MH8640> king<MH4428> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>Cush<MH3568a>, &#8220;Behold<MH2009>, he has come<MH3318> out<MH3318> to fight<MH3898a> you,&#8221; he sent<MH7971> messengers<MH4397> again<MH7725> to Hezekiah<MH2396>, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>&#8220;This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> you shall say<MH559> to Hezekiah<MH2396> king<MH4428> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>Judah<MH3063>: &#8216;Do not let your God<MH430> in whom<MH834> you trust<MH982> deceive<MH5378> you by saying<MH559>, &#8220;Jerusalem<MH3389> will not be handed<MH5414, 3027> over<MH5414> to the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Behold<MH2009>, you yourself<MH859> have heard<MH8085> what<MH834> the kings<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b> have done<MH6213a> to all<MH3605> the lands<MH776>, destroying<MH2763a> them completely<MH2763a>. So will you be saved<MH5337>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Did the gods<MH430> of the nations<MH1471> which<MH834> my fathers<MH1> destroyed<MH7843> save<MH5337> them: Gozan<MH1470>, Haran<MH2771a>, Rezeph<MH7530>, and the sons<MH1121> of Eden<MH5729> who<MH834> <i>were</i> in Telassar<MH8515>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Where<MH335> is the king<MH4428> of Hamath<MH2574>, the king<MH4428> of Arpad<MH774>, the king<MH4428> of the city<MH5892b> of Sepharvaim<MH5617>, and <i>of</i> Hena<MH2012> and Ivvah<MH5755>?&#8217;&#8221; <p class="hdg">Hezekiah&#8217;s Prayer</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then Hezekiah<MH2396> took<MH3947> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>letter<MH5612> from the hand<MH3027> of the messengers<MH4397> and read<MH7121> it, and he went<MH5927> up<MH5927> to the house<MH1004> of the LORD<MH3068> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>spread<MH6566> it out<MH6566> before<MH6440> the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Hezekiah<MH2396> prayed<MH6419> before<MH6440> the LORD<MH3068> and said<MH559>, &#8220;LORD<MH3068>, God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>enthroned<MH3427> <i>above</i> the cherubim<MH3742>, You are the God<MH430>, You alone<MH905>, of all<MH3605> the kingdoms<MH4467> of the earth<MH776>. You have made<MH6213a> heaven<MH8064> and earth<MH776>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Incline<MH5186> Your ear<MH241>, LORD<MH3068>, and hear<MH8085>; open<MH6491b> Your eyes<MH5869>, LORD<MH3068>, and see<MH7200>; and listen<MH8085> to the words<MH1697> of Sennacherib<MH5576>, which<MH834> he has sent<MH7971> to taunt<MH2778a> the living<MH2416a> God<MH430>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>It is true<MH551>, LORD<MH3068>; the kings<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b> have laid<MH2717b> waste<MH2717b> the nations<MH1471> and their lands<MH776>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>and have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>hurled<MH5414> their gods<MH430> into the fire<MH784>; for they were not gods<MH430>, but <i>only</i> the work<MH4639> of human<MH120> hands<MH3027>, wood<MH6086> and stone<MH68>. So they have destroyed<MH6> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>But now<MH6258>, LORD<MH3068> our God<MH430>, please<MH4994>, save<MH3467> us from his hand<MH3027>, so that all<MH3605> the kingdoms<MH4467> of the earth<MH776> may know<MH3045> that You alone<MH905>, LORD<MH3068>, are God<MH430>.&#8221; <p class="hdg">God&#8217;s Answer through Isaiah</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Then Isaiah<MH3470b> the son<MH1121> of Amoz<MH531> sent<MH7971> <i>word</i> to Hezekiah<MH2396>, saying<MH559>, &#8220;This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478> says<MH559>: &#8216;Because<MH834> you have prayed<MH6419> to Me about<MH413> Sennacherib<MH5576> king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b>, I have heard<MH8085> <i>you.</i>&#8217; <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>This<MH2088> is the word<MH1697> that the LORD<MH3068> has spoken<MH1696> against<MH5921> him: <p class="indent1stline">&#8216;She, the virgin<MH1330> daughter<MH1323> of Zion<MH6726>, has shown<MH959> contempt<MH959> for you <i>and</i> mocked<MH3932> you; <t><p class="indent1">She, the daughter<MH1323> of Jerusalem<MH3389>, has shaken<MH5128> <i>her</i> head<MH7218> behind<MH310> you! <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>&#8216;Whom<MH4310> have you taunted<MH2778a> and blasphemed<MH1442>? <t><p class="indent1">And against<MH5921> whom<MH4310> have you raised<MH7311> <i>your</i> voice<MH6963>, <t><p class="indent1">And <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>haughtily<MH4791> raised<MH5375> your eyes<MH5869>? <t><p class="indent1">Against<MH5921> the Holy<MH6918> One<MH6918> of Israel<MH3478>! <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>&#8216;Through<MH3027> your messengers<MH4397> you have taunted<MH2778a> the Lord<MH136>, <t><p class="indent1">And you have said<MH559>, &#8220;With my many<MH7230> chariots<MH7393> <t><p class="indent1">I went<MH5927> up<MH5927> to the heights<MH4791> of the mountains<MH2022>, <t><p class="indent1">To the remotest<MH3411> parts<MH3411> of Lebanon<MH3844>; <t><p class="indent1">And I cut<MH3772> down<MH3772> its tall<MH6967> cedars<MH730> <i>and</i> its choicest<MH4004> junipers<MH1265>. <t><p class="indent1">And I entered<MH935> its farthest<MH7093> resting<MH4411> place<MH4411>, its thickest<MH3759> forest<MH3293a>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>&#8220;I dug<MH6979> <i>wells</i> and drank<MH8354> foreign<MH2114a> waters<MH4325>, <t><p class="indent1">And with the soles<MH3709> of my feet<MH6471> I dried<MH2717a> up<MH2717a> <t><p class="indent1">All<MH3605> the streams<MH2975> of Egypt<MH4693>.&#8221; <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>&#8216;Have you not heard<MH8085>? <t><p class="indent1">Long<MH7350> ago<MH7350> I did<MH6213a> it; <t><p class="indent1">From ancient<MH6924a> times<MH3117, 6924a> I planned<MH3335> it. <t><p class="indent1">Now<MH6258> I have brought<MH935> it about<MH935>, <t><p class="indent1">That you would turn<MH1961, 7582> fortified<MH1219> cities<MH5892b> into ruined<MH5327c> heaps<MH1530>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>&#8216;Therefore their inhabitants<MH3427> were <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>powerless<MH7116, 3027>, <t><p class="indent1">They were shattered<MH2865> and put<MH954> to<MH954> shame<MH954>. <t><p class="indent1">They were <i>like</i> the vegetation<MH6212a> of the field<MH7704> and the green<MH3419> grass<MH1877>, <t><p class="indent1"><i>Like</i> grass<MH2682> on the housetops<MH1406> that is scorched<MH7711a> before<MH6440> it has grown<MH7054>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>&#8216;But I know<MH3045> your sitting<MH3427> down<MH3427>, <t><p class="indent1">Your going<MH3318> out<MH3318>, your coming<MH935> in<MH935>, <t><p class="indent1">And your raging<MH7264> against<MH413> Me. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>&#8216;Because<MH3282> of your raging<MH7264> against<MH413> Me, <t><p class="indent1">And because your complacency<MH7600> has come<MH5927> up<MH5927> to My ears<MH241>, <t><p class="indent1">I will put<MH7760> My hook<MH2397> in your nose<MH639>, <t><p class="indent1">And My bridle<MH4964> in your lips<MH8193>, <t><p class="indent1">And I will turn<MH7725> you back<MH7725> by the way<MH1870> by which<MH834> you came<MH935>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>&#8216;Then this<MH2088> shall be the sign<MH226> for you: <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>you will eat<MH398> this year<MH8141> what<MH5599b> grows<MH5599b> of<MH5599b> itself<MH5599b>, in the second<MH8145> year<MH8141> what<MH5501b> grows<MH5501b> by<MH5501b> itself<MH5501b>, and in the third<MH7992> year<MH8141> sow<MH2232>, harvest<MH7114b>, plant<MH5193> vineyards<MH3754>, and eat<MH398> their fruit<MH6529>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>The survivors<MH6413> that are left<MH7604> of the house<MH1004> of Judah<MH3063> will again<MH3254> <i>take</i> root<MH8328> downward<MH4295> and bear<MH6213a> fruit<MH6529> upward<MH4605>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>For out<MH3318> of Jerusalem<MH3389> will go<MH3318> a remnant<MH7611>, and survivors<MH6413> out of Mount<MH2022> Zion<MH6726>. The zeal<MH7068> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>the LORD<MH3068> will perform<MH6213a> this<MH2088>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>&#8216;Therefore<MH3651> this<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559> about<MH413> the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b>: &#8220;He will not come<MH935> to this<MH2088> city<MH5892b> nor<MH3808> shoot<MH3384> an arrow<MH2671> there<MH8033>; and he will not come<MH6923> before<MH6923> it with a shield<MH4043> nor<MH3808> heap<MH8210> up<MH8210> an assault<MH5550> ramp<MH5550> against<MH5921> it. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>By the way<MH1870> that he came<MH935>, by <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>the same he will return<MH7725>, and he shall not come<MH935> to this<MH2088> city<MH5892b>,&#8221;&#8217; declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>&#8216;For I will protect<MH1598> this<MH2088> city<MH5892b> to save<MH3467> it for My own sake<MH4616>, and for My servant<MH5650> David&#8217;s<MH1732> sake<MH4616>.&#8217;&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>Then it happened<MH1961> that night<MH3915> that the angel<MH4397> of the LORD<MH3068> went<MH3318> out<MH3318> and struck<MH5221> 185,000<MH3967, 8084, 2568, 505> in the camp<MH4264> of the Assyrians<MH804b>; and when <i>the rest</i> got<MH7925> up<MH7925> early<MH7925> in the morning<MH1242>, behold<MH2009>, all<MH3605> of <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>the 185,000 were <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>dead<MH4191, 6297>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-36.htm"><b>36</b></a></span>So Sennacherib<MH5576> the king<MH4428> of Assyria<MH804b> departed<MH5265> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>returned<MH7725> <i>home,</i> and lived<MH3427> at Nineveh<MH5210>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/2_kings/19-37.htm"><b>37</b></a></span>Then it came<MH1961> about<MH1961>, as he was worshiping<MH2331c> in the house<MH1004> of Nisroch<MH5268> his god<MH430>, that <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>Adrammelech<MH152> and Sharezer<MH8272> killed<MH5221> him with the sword<MH2719>; and they escaped<MH4422> to the land<MH776> of Ararat<MH780>.
