he himself has been raised<MG1453> from the dead<MG3498>, and that is why<MG1223> miraculous<MG1411> powers<MG1411> are at work<MG1754> in him.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>For when Herod<MG2264> had John<MG2491> arrested<MG2902>, he bound<MG1210> him and put<MG659> him in prison<MG5438> because<MG1223> of Herodias<MG2266>, the wife<MG1135> of his brother<MG80> Philip<MG5376>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>For John<MG2491> had been saying<MG3004> to him, “It is not lawful<MG1832> for you to have<MG2192> her.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Although Herod wanted<MG2309> to put<MG615> him to<MG615> death<MG615>, he feared<MG5399> the crowd<MG3793>, because<MG3754> they regarded<MG2192> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>John<MG846> as a prophet<MG4396>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>But when Herod’s<MG2264> birthday<MG1077> came<MG1096>, the daughter<MG2364> of Herodias<MG2266> danced<MG3738> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>before<MG1722, 3319> <i>them</i> and pleased<MG700> Herod<MG2264>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>so<MG3606> <i>much</i> that<MG3606> he promised<MG3670> with an oath<MG3727> to give<MG1325> her whatever<MG3739, 1437> she asked<MG154>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And after being prompted<MG4264> by her mother<MG3384>, she *said<MG5346>, “Give<MG1325> me the head<MG2776> of John<MG2491> the Baptist<MG910> here<MG5602> on a platter<MG4094>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And although he was grieved<MG3076>, the king<MG935> commanded<MG2753> <i>it</i> to be given<MG1325> because<MG1223> of his oaths<MG3727> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>his dinner<MG4873> guests<MG4873>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>He sent<MG3992> <i>word</i> and had John<MG2491> beheaded<MG607> in the prison<MG5438>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>And his head<MG2776> was brought<MG5342> on a platter<MG4094> and given<MG1325> to the girl<MG2877>, and she brought<MG5342> <i>it</i> to her mother<MG3384>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span><span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>John’s disciples<MG3101> came<MG4334> and took<MG142> away<MG142> the body<MG4430> and buried<MG2290> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>it; and they went<MG2064> and reported<MG518> to Jesus<MG2424>. <p class="hdg">Five Thousand Men Fed</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Now<MG1161> when Jesus<MG2424> heard<MG191> <i>about John,</i> He withdrew<MG402> from<MG1564> there<MG1564> in a boat<MG4143> to a secluded<MG2048> place<MG5117> by Himself<MG2398>; and when the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>people<MG3793> heard<MG191> <i>about this,</i> they followed<MG190> Him on foot<MG3979a> from the cities<MG4172>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>When He came<MG1831> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>ashore<MG1831>, He saw<MG3708> a large<MG4183> crowd<MG3793>, and felt<MG4697> compassion<MG4697> for them and healed<MG2323> their sick<MG732>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Now when it was evening<MG3798>, the disciples<MG3101> came<MG4334> to Him and said<MG3004>, “This<MG3588> place<MG5117> is secluded<MG2048> and the hour<MG5610> is already<MG2235> past<MG3928> <i>to eat;</i> send<MG630> the crowds<MG3793> away<MG630>, so<MG2443> that<MG2443> they may go<MG565> into the villages<MG2968> and buy<MG59> food<MG1033> for themselves<MG1438>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>But Jesus<MG2424> said<MG3004> to them, “They do not need<MG5532> to go<MG565>; you give<MG1325> them <i>something</i> to eat<MG2068>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>They *said<MG3004> to Him, “We have<MG2192> nothing<MG3756> here<MG5602> except<MG1487, 3361> five<MG4002> loaves<MG740> and two<MG1417> fish<MG2486>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>And He said<MG3004>, “Bring<MG5342> them here<MG5602> to Me.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And ordering<MG2753> the crowds<MG3793> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>sit<MG347> down<MG347> on the grass<MG5528>, He took<MG2983> the five<MG4002> loaves<MG740> and the two<MG1417> fish<MG2486>, and looked<MG308> up<MG308> toward<MG1519> heaven<MG3772>. He blessed<MG2127> <i>the food</i> and breaking<MG2806> the loaves<MG740>, He gave<MG1325> them to the disciples<MG3101>, and the disciples<MG3101> <i>gave them</i> to the crowds<MG3793>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>And they all<MG3956> ate<MG2068> and were satisfied<MG5526>, and they picked<MG142> up<MG142> what<MG3588> was left<MG4052> over<MG4052> of the broken<MG2801> pieces<MG2801>: twelve<MG1427> full<MG4134> baskets<MG2894>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>There were about<MG5616> five<MG4000> thousand<MG4000> men<MG435> who ate<MG2068>, besides<MG5565> women<MG1135> and children<MG3813>. <p class="hdg">Jesus Walks on the Water</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Immediately<MG2112> <i>afterward</i> He compelled<MG315> the disciples<MG3101> to get<MG1684> into the boat<MG4143> and to go<MG4254> ahead<MG4254> of Him to the other<MG4008> side<MG4008>, while<MG2193> He sent<MG630> the crowds<MG3793> away<MG630>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>After He had sent<MG630> the crowds<MG3793> away<MG630>, He went<MG305> up<MG305> on the mountain<MG3735> by Himself<MG2398> to pray<MG4336>; and when it was evening<MG3798>, He was there<MG1563> alone<MG3441>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>But the boat<MG4143> was already<MG2235> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>a long<MG4183> distance<MG4712> from the land<MG1093>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>battered<MG928> by the waves<MG2949>; for the wind<MG417> was <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>contrary<MG1727>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>And in the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>fourth<MG5067a> watch<MG5438> of the night<MG3571> He came<MG2064> to them, walking<MG4043> on the sea<MG2281>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>When the disciples<MG3101> saw<MG3708> Him walking<MG4043> on the sea<MG2281>, they were terrified<MG5015>, and said<MG3004>, “It is a ghost<MG5326>!” And they cried<MG2896> out<MG2896> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>in fear<MG5401>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>But immediately<MG2117> Jesus<MG2424> spoke<MG2980> to them, saying<MG3004>, “Take<MG2293> courage<MG2293>, <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>it is I; do not be<MG5399> afraid<MG5399>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>Peter<MG4074> responded<MG611> and said<MG3004> to Him, “Lord<MG2962>, if<MG1487> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>it is You, command<MG2753> me to come<MG2064> to You on the water<MG5204>.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>And He said<MG3004>, “Come<MG2064>!” And Peter<MG4074> got<MG2597> out<MG2597> of the boat<MG4143> and walked<MG4043> on the water<MG5204>, and came<MG2064> toward<MG4314> Jesus<MG2424>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>But seeing<MG991> the wind<MG417>, he became<MG5399> frightened<MG5399>, and when he began<MG757> to sink<MG2670>, he cried<MG2896> out<MG2896>, saying<MG3004>, “Lord<MG2962>, save<MG4982> me!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Immediately<MG2112> Jesus<MG2424> reached<MG1614> out<MG1614> with His hand<MG5495> and took<MG1949> hold<MG1949> of him, and *said<MG3004> to him, “You of<MG3640b> little<MG3640b> faith<MG3640b>, why<MG1519, 5101> did you doubt<MG1365b>?” <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>When they got<MG305> into the boat<MG4143>, the wind<MG417> stopped<MG2869>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>And those<MG3588> who were in the boat<MG4143> worshiped<MG4352> Him, saying<MG3004>, “You are truly<MG230> God’s<MG2316> Son<MG5207>!” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>When they had crossed<MG1276> over<MG1276>, they came<MG2064> to land<MG1093> at Gennesaret<MG1082>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/matthew/14-35.htm"><b>35</b></a></span>And when the men<MG435> of that place<MG5117> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>recognized<MG1921> Him, they sent<MG649> <i>word</i> into all<MG3650> that surrounding<MG4066> region<MG4066> and brought<MG4374> to Him all<MG3956> who were sick<MG2560>;
