and behold<MH2009>, the undergarment<MH232> was ruined<MH7843>, it was<MH6743b> completely<MH3605> useless<MH3808, 6743b>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/13-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Then the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068> came<MH1961> to me, saying<MH559>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/13-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>“This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559>: ‘To the same<MH3602> extent<MH3602> I will destroy<MH7843> the pride<MH1347b> of Judah<MH3063> and the great<MH7227a> pride<MH1347b> of Jerusalem<MH3389>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/13-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>This<MH2088> wicked<MH7451a> people<MH5971a>, who<MH3987> refuse<MH3987> to listen<MH8085> to My words<MH1697>, who walk<MH1980> in the stubbornness<MH8307> of their hearts<MH3820> and have followed<MH1980, 310> other<MH312> gods<MH430> to serve<MH5647> them and to bow<MH2331c> down<MH2331c> to them, let them be just like this<MH2088> undergarment<MH232> which<MH834> is<MH6743b> completely<MH3605> useless<MH3808, 6743b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/13-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>For as the undergarment<MH232> clings<MH1692> to the waist<MH4975> of a man<MH376>, so<MH3651> I made the entire<MH3605> household<MH1004> of Israel<MH3478> and the entire<MH3605> household<MH1004> of Judah<MH3063> cling<MH1692> to Me,’ declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>, ‘so that they might be My people<MH5971a>, for <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>renown<MH8034>, for praise<MH8416>, and for glory<MH8597>; but they did not listen<MH8085>.’ <p class="hdg">Captivity Threatened</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/13-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>“Therefore you are to speak<MH559> this<MH2088> word<MH1697> to them. ‘This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478> says<MH559>: “Every<MH3605> jug<MH5035a> is to be filled<MH4390> with wine<MH3196>.”’ And <i>when</i> they say<MH559> to you, ‘Do we not very<MH3045> well<MH3045> know<MH3045> that every<MH3605> jug<MH5035a> is to be filled<MH4390> with wine<MH3196>?’ <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/13-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>then say<MH559> to them, ‘This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559>: “Behold<MH2009>, I am going to fill<MH4390> all<MH3605> the inhabitants<MH3427> of this<MH2088> land<MH776>—the kings<MH4428> who sit<MH3427> for David<MH1732> on his throne<MH3678>, the priests<MH3548>, the prophets<MH5030>, and all<MH3605> the inhabitants<MH3427> of Jerusalem<MH3389>—with drunkenness<MH7943>! <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/13-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Then I will smash<MH5310a> them against<MH413> each<MH376> other<MH251>, both the fathers<MH1> and the sons<MH1121> together<MH3164a>,” declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>. “I will not have<MH2550> compassion<MH2550> nor<MH3808> be<MH2347> troubled<MH2347> nor<MH3808> take<MH7355> pity<MH7355> so as to keep<MH4480> from<MH4480> destroying<MH7843> them.”’” <poetry><p class="paragraph"><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/13-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Listen<MH8085> and pay<MH238> attention<MH238>, do not be<MH1361b> haughty<MH1361b>; <t><p class="indent1">For the LORD<MH3068> has spoken<MH1696>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/13-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>Give<MH5414> glory<MH3519b> to the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430> <t><p class="indent1">Before<MH2962> He brings<MH2821> darkness<MH2821> <t><p class="indent1">And before<MH2962> your feet<MH7272> stumble<MH5062> <t><p class="indent1">On the mountains<MH2022> in the dark<MH5399>, <t><p class="indent1">And while you are hoping<MH6960a> for light<MH216> <t><p class="indent1">He makes<MH7760> it into gloom<MH6757>, <t><p class="indent1"><i>And</i> turns<MH7896> <i>it</i> into thick<MH6205> darkness<MH6205>. <poetry><p class="indent1"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/13-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>But if<MH518> you do not listen<MH8085> to it, <t><p class="indent1">My soul<MH5315> will weep<MH1058> in secret<MH4565> for <i>such</i> pride<MH1466>;
