The study also shows how charging differs from region to region. </b></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Specifically, the Japanese shy away from public charging even more than the Europeans, but the South Koreans swear by it. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>In Europe, </span></span></span></p> <ul> <li><span><span><span>23% of EV drivers use public chargers for 0% to 20% of their annual charging needs. </span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span>30% use public charging for 20% to 40% of their annual needs, and</span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span>47% use public charging for 40% and more of their needs. </span></span></span></li> </ul> <p><span><span><span>In Japan, </span></span></span></p> <ul> <li><span><span><span>a full third (33%) of EV drivers use public chargers for the smallest (0%-20%) share of their charging needs, and</span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span>28% use it for 20% to 40% of their needs. </span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span>That means just 39% uses public charging for more than 40% of their needs. </span></span></span></li> </ul> <p><span><span><span>In South Korea, however,</span></span></span></p> <ul> <li><span><span><span>just 3% of EV drivers relies least (0%-20%) on public charging stations, while</span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span>11% uses them for 20% to 40% of their needs. </span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span>That leaves the overwhelming majority (86%) using public charging for at least 40% of their needs. </span></span></span></li> </ul> <p><span><span><span>Why the stark differences? Europeans prefer charging at home, and many who live in detached houses have the opportunity. Koreans, who typically live in large residential blocks without the opportunity for home charging. Instead, they are able to rely on well-provided public charging infrastructure. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>So, what’s up with Japan? EVs have not yet made large inroads in the country, mainly because local OEMs don’t yet have a wide and attractive range of EV models, but also because Japan hasn’t yet passed the chicken-or-egg phase of public charging infrastructure. In other words: there’s little infrastructure because there are few EVs, and there are few EVs because there is little infrastructure. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>This is just one of the insights from the EV Charging Index 2024. The study, published by global management consultancy Roland Berger, shows an industry struggling with slowdown in 2023 after rapid expansion up to the previous year.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Overall, China increases its lead at the top of the Global Charging Index, while its closest competitors – the U.S., Germany, the Netherlands – all stagnate or decrease, as do most mature markets. The developing markets of the Middle East and Southeast Asia, for their part, are catching up – <i>see graph</i>. </span></span></span></p> <p><img alt="" src="/sites/default/files/screenshot_2024-07-18_at_13.05.41.png" /></p> <p><span><span><span>The slowdown in the mature markets is caused by high energy cost and high inflation, and governments turning their attention away from EV purchase <a href="https://www.globalfleet.com/en/taxation-and-legislation/north-america/features/china-challenges-us-electric-vehicle-subsidies-wto?a=YHE11&t%5B0%5D=United%20States&t%5B1%5D=China&t%5B2%5D=Trade&curl=1">subsidies</a> to EV infrastructure. One positive result from that redirection of funding: more than 80% of EV drivers say public charging has become easier in the past half year, a rise in satisfaction that is thanks in large part to the growing share of fast chargers. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Some findings from the report on three key issues:</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><b>EV sales</b></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Some developing markets showed the strongest growth, but China’s 36% market penetration rate in 2023 remains world-leading. In Europe, the removal of subsidies has slowed down EV growth in key markets like the Netherlands and Germany. In the U.S., PHEVs now make up 20% of overall sales. Their increasing popularity, also in Europe, reflects continued reservations about public charging. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><b>Charging infrastructure</b></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>China has been able to match the increase in charging points with that of EV sales. In the U.S., however charging infrastructure growth slowed down in 2023. In fact, vehicle-to-charger ratios stagnated or declined slightly everywhere, except in the rapidly evolving Middle East. Fast chargers are a global success story: their share of public chargers is increasing everywhere, and is now at about 25% globally. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><b>Market dynamics</b></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Thanks to technological advances and increasing cost-efficiency, the charging market is increasingly dynamic. In Europe and the U.S., new players from related fields are joining in, for example utility companies and supermarket chains. Chinese players are expanding globally, especially in Europe. OEMs are increasing their involvement, but are not yet major players. Branded charging networks are a factor when buying an EV, especially in China, India, and the Middle East.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><i><a
