Islanders Cindy Buxton needs no introduction – her name is well known in the Falklands. One mention of it conjures up fabulous wildlife images, a courageous spirit and more than a hint of outdoorsy glamour.<br>But for those less familiar Lucinda Catherine Buxton is a British wildlife film-maker, photographer and author. She released her first wildlife film Nakuru (based in Kenya) when she was just 21 years old in 1971. To Islanders though she is best known for her years filming on Carcass Island, New Island and West Point and Steeple Jason not to mention becoming stranded with her friend Annie Price on South Georgia during the 1982 war. (See films Falklands Summer 1981 – Stranded on South Georgia 1982).<br>Last week Cindy returned to the Islands for a joyful holiday along with her nephew Sam for his belated 50th birthday and his wife Anna and together they spent two days relaxing on Carcass Island where Cindy was able to finally introduce her family to the wildlife they’d only ever seen in her movies.<br>But how did it all begin?<br>“I first came to the Falklands for a recce,” explained Cindy.<br>There she met up with Governor Jim Parker who had previously approached her father Lord Buxton (founder of Anglia Television and the television series Survival) to see if there was any interest in filming the wildlife, “in the hope that it might generate some tourism.”<br>Cindy, who was between filming two movies in Africa took up the challenge, and on arrival in 1978 “made a point of really talking to the locals, because it’s the local people who know where the wildlife is, where the best islands are.”<br>She visited New Island and met Ian Strange and then took a trip to Pebble Island. After two or three weeks, “having looked round there was no question – in my view the islands, the wildlife and the people were absolutely perfect.” In particular she was impressed by how tame the wildlife was.<br>The Governor told her if she insisted on spending time on the islands she must have company so she contacted an old school friend Annie Price to help with the filming. “She had no idea where the Falklands were, and thought she could go home every other weekend to see her parents, until I explained that it was actually 8,000 miles away and no, she could not go home.”<br>The pair went on to spend two years filming wildlife on isolated islands said Cindy: “And once everybody realized and understood what it was that we were doing they were just so unbelievably helpful and would say ‘you must go to that island to film something.’”<br>South Georgia<br>In year three they headed to South Georgia to St Andrews Bay courtesy of RRS John Biscoe on to which they loaded, “all the equipment, all the food, all the camping equipment, everything else that you can think of.”<br>She said: “I remember spending an hour or so with some weather person who taught us about certain clouds and what it meant, in case we ever got caught out.”<br>They flew to Rio for a couple of days, joined John Biscoe, and then on to South Georgia, stopping off at Grytviken at the BAS base, and then sailed round to St Andrews Bay. BAS had built a hut for the pair of them. They were ‘privileged’ to be allowed there at all because up until that point no women were allowed and it had taken a great deal of begging the Head of BAS Dick Laws on Cindy’s part to achieve their aim, she explained.<br>Cindy said before leaving Dick had asked if she still had her appendix. When she replied “yes,” he had said she should have it removed. She’d refused and said Annie could remove it if necessary.<br>“Before we went, Annie and I spent maybe one afternoon with one of the doctors at the hospital who taught us how to give ourselves injections, how to set arms and legs. We went through the first aid kit and she told us what to do if something went wrong. Of course, by the time we got back to Government House I forgot most of it.<br>“If one of us had got appendicitis, we had all the equipment to do the operation and then we would have gone on the radio and talked to one of the doctors on the BAS ships who would have told us what to do. And I was perfectly happy with the thought of Annie taking out my appendix.<br>“The thing that really bothered me was her sewing me up. I had seen her sewing before, and it was appalling.”<br>The pair spent eight months on South Georgia filming and appreciating the exquisite wildlife: “It was much colder down there, but it’s a very dry cold. It’s not the damp that you get here.<br>“We would spend hours and hours sitting down in the king penguin company, which, at that time, there was about 40,000 breeding pairs, I think it’s three times that now. Every half hour or so, we would look at each other to make sure that our nose and our cheeks hadn’t gone white.<br>“We would breathe on them – get the blood circulation going again. But I remember the core of our body would just quiver uncontrollably – and it was burning calories like you would not believe. I think Annie and I ate about 5,000 calories a day.”<br>The pair only lost about half a stone, but it was hard work to maintain weight.<br>In terms of the hut size, it was around half that of the Shackleton hut in the Museum said Cindy with two bunks rather than the four.<br>Argentines<br>Then on March 19 things got noisy. Argentine scrap metal workers arrived at Leith Harbour, South Georgia, on board the transport ship ARA Bahía Buen Suceso and raised the Argentine flag<br>Cindy and Annie were bemused by the sound of gunfire – it was the soldiers hunting reindeer they later discovered. The pair communicated with Nick Barker of HMS Endurance who sent a helicopter to take them to the ship to discuss the situation. On board they were able to speak to Falklands Governor Rex Hunt who said there were indications of a task force in the near future.<br>South Georgia was invaded on April 3: “We could hear a lot of commotion going on, noises explosions and things like that. We were surrounded by glaciers and mountains and they kind of vibrate and echo so we could hear everything.”<br>During the South Georgia invasion the pair were back at the hut and HMS Endurance sent over by helicopter one of their crew said Cindy: “A wonderful man called Tommy Scott, who spent the entire afternoon with Annie and I teaching us how to fire a 9mm pistol.”<br>“He promised us that if we did exactly as he was teaching the person would fall down dead. And you know, I remember staring at each other and thinking, heavens, we just came here to shoot penguins. You know, film them.”<br>“Nothing ever happened, and it was made very clear to us by Tommy only ever to even consider it if one, possibly two Argentinians came along, particularly if they had unpleasant intentions, being the only two girls there.”<br>Happily they never had to use the pistol and they saw nobody until the SAS arrived some weeks later asking for information about, “which way doors and windows opened at the BAS basic.”<br>“And, of course, Annie and I couldn’t remember, we were absolutely hopeless. Had no idea how many windows or doors or which way they went. So we were not at all helpful.”<br>No long after they were picked up by Endurance but kindly given the opportunity to film the aftermath at Grytviken including the Argentine submarine Santa Fe, two helicopters and a damaged frigate.<br>They then sailed on HMS Antrim – however at that time the Belgrano was sunk and in retaliation, the Argentines attacked HMS Sheffield, which was the sister ship to Antrim. Antrim was tasked to turn around and go back so Cindy and Annie transferred to HMS Antelope which carried them to Ascension Island.<br>Interestingly on the same ship and in the opposite cabin to Cindy was General Alfredo Ignacio Astiz known in Argentina as The Angel of Death. He was ultimately sentenced to life imprisonment for the kidnapping and murder of political activists.<br>Astiz, who commanded the invasion of South Georgia, had contacted Cindy and Annie in the early days of the occupation to order the pair to dismantle their radio.<br>After Ascension it was the end of the adventure.
