Out of the hundreds of letters Graves' office received on this topic, he destroyed all but thirty. Minck claims that a narrow-minded, conservative Christian worldview typifies the mindset of most Kansans. He argues that this mindset will undermine the intellectual development of Kansas children and impede their professional development as adults. Minck sent a copy of his letter to Governor Bill Graves. The April 1999 decision of the Kansas Board of Education reflects a broader movement by advocates of "intelligent design" to alter standards for science curriculum in public schools. This issue is also part of a broader national debate on the role of religion in public schools.
