conducts<br/>NEC Philharmonia </strong></h3><p>In his debut season as NEC’s Stanford and Norma Jean Calderwood Director of Orchestras, <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20081231145733/http://www.newenglandconservatory.edu/faculty/wolffH.html"><strong>Hugh Wolff</strong></a> is charged with elevating orchestral studies to one of NEC’s signature programs. Having led orchestras here and abroad and garnered multiple Grammy nominations with his extensive recording output, Wolff has relocated to Boston and will give pride of place to the concerts he prepares and conducts with NEC’s student orchestras. <strong>“We’re going to stir it up,”</strong> he promises.</p> <p>Wolff opens NEC's orchestra season with our senior orchestra, the <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20081231145733/http://www.newenglandconservatory.edu/ensemble/orchestra.html"><strong>NEC Philharmonia</strong></a>, in a program of music spanning two centuries that evokes the movement of theatre and dance. Richard Wagner called <strong>Beethoven</strong>'s <em>Symphony No. 7</em> "the apotheosis of the dance." <strong>Barber</strong>'s <em>Music for a Scene from Shelley, Op. 7</em>, was inspired by Barber's reading of Percy Bysshe Shelley’s play <em>Prometheus Unbound</em>. <strong>Kernis</strong>'s <em>New Era Dance</em> was commissioned by the New York Philharmonic in 1992.</p> <p>Wolff's program also leads off New England Conservatory's celebration of the 100th birthday of composer <strong>Elliott Carter</strong>, with a performance of Carter's <em>Holiday Overture</em>.</p> <p><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20081231145733/http://www.newenglandconservatory.edu/pdf/1oct08wolffprogramnote.pdf"><strong>Read Wolff’s thoughts on this program.</strong></a></p> <p>NEC and local partners will present all five of Carter's string quartets this fall, as well as other works from the entire span of Carter's amazing transformational journey.
