Danuta, wówczas piętnastoletnia sierota, postanowiła wstąpić do Armii Krajowej, podziemnej formacji zbrojnej wiernej polskiemu rządowi na uchodźstwie w Anglii. W podziemiu zdobyła przeszkolenie medyczne i została sanitariuszką. W czerwcu 1945 r. Danuta została aresztowana przez komunistyczne siły bezpieczeństwa, wkrótce jednak uwolnili ją partyzanci. \u003c/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBy uniknąć schwytania, zmieniła nazwisko i przeniosła się do dawnych niemieckich Prus Wschodnich, obecnie części Polski. Tam podjęła pracę w leśniczówce, utrzymując kontakt z antykomunistycznym ruchem oporu. Przybrała pseudonim „Inka”, zapewne przywołując wspomnienie dawnej potęgi państwa Inków w Peru. Wykonując zadanie łączniczki, 20 lipca 1946 r. Danuta przybyła do Gdańska, gdzie została aresztowana i wtrącona do aresztu. Przesłuchujący starali się wymusić od niej nazwiska jej kontaktów, jednak mimo bicia i maltretowania „Inka” milczała. 3 sierpnia 1946 r. „Inka” została skazana na śmierć.
