I will not withhold<MH4513> a word<MH1697> from you.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/42-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Then they said<MH559> to Jeremiah<MH3414>, “May the LORD<MH3068> be a true<MH571> and faithful<MH539> witness<MH5707> against us if<MH518> we do not act<MH6213a> in accordance with the whole<MH3605> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>message<MH1697> with which<MH834> the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430> will send<MH7971> you to us. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/42-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Whether<MH518> <i>it is</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>pleasant<MH2896b> or<MH518> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>unpleasant<MH7451b>, we will listen<MH8085> to the voice<MH6963> of the LORD<MH3068> our God<MH430> to whom<MH834> we are sending<MH7971> you, so<MH4616> that<MH4616> it may go<MH3190> well<MH3190> for us when<MH3588> we listen<MH8085> to the voice<MH6963> of the LORD<MH3068> our God<MH430>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/42-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Now at the end<MH7093> of ten<MH6235> days<MH3117> the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068> came<MH1961> to Jeremiah<MH3414>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/42-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>Then he called<MH7121> for Johanan<MH3076> the son<MH1121> of Kareah<MH7143> and all<MH3605> the commanders<MH8269> of the forces<MH2428> that were with him, and for all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> from the small<MH6996b> to the great<MH1419>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/42-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>and said<MH559> to them, “This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> says<MH559>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478>, to whom<MH834> you sent<MH7971> me to present<MH5307> your plea<MH8467> before<MH6440> Him: <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/42-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>‘If<MH518> you will indeed<MH3427> stay<MH3427> in this<MH2088> land<MH776>, then I will build<MH1129> you up<MH1129> and not tear<MH2040> you down<MH2040>, and I will plant<MH5193> you and not uproot<MH5428> you; for I <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>will relent<MH5162> of the disaster<MH7463a> that I have inflicted<MH6213a> on you. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/42-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Do not be<MH3372a> afraid<MH3372a> of the king<MH4428> of Babylon<MH894>, whom<MH834> you are <i>now</i> fearing<MH3372a>; do not be<MH3372a> afraid<MH3372a> of him,’ declares<MH5002> the LORD<MH3068>, ‘for I am with you to save<MH3467> you and rescue<MH5337> you from his hand<MH3027>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/42-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>I will also show<MH5414> you compassion<MH7356>, so that he will have<MH7355> compassion<MH7355> on<MH7355> you and restore<MH7725> you to your own soil<MH127>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/42-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>But if<MH518> you are going to say<MH559>, “We will not stay<MH3427> in this<MH2088> land<MH776>,” so as not to listen<MH8085> to the voice<MH6963> of the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/42-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>saying<MH559>, “No<MH3808>, but we will go<MH935> to the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>, where<MH834> we will not see<MH7200> war<MH4421>, or hear<MH8085> the sound<MH6963> of a trumpet<MH7782>, or hunger<MH7456> for bread<MH3899>, and we will stay<MH3427> there<MH8033>”; <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/42-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>then <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>in that case<MH6258, 3651> listen<MH8085> to the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068>, you remnant<MH7611> of Judah<MH3063>. This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> of armies<MH6635>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478> says<MH559>: “If<MH518> you really<MH7760> set<MH7760> your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>minds<MH6440> to enter<MH935> Egypt<MH4714> and go<MH935> in<MH935> to reside<MH1481a> there<MH8033>, <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/42-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>then the sword<MH2719>, of which<MH834> you are afraid<MH3372a>, will overtake<MH5381> you there<MH8033> in the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>; and the famine<MH7458>, about which<MH834> you are<MH1672> anxious<MH1672>, will follow<MH1692> closely<MH1692> after<MH310> you there<MH8033> <i>in</i> Egypt<MH4714>, and you will die<MH4191> there<MH8033>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/42-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>So all<MH3605> the people<MH376> who<MH834> set<MH7760> their <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>minds<MH6440> to go<MH935> to Egypt<MH4714> to reside<MH1481a> there<MH8033> will die<MH4191> by the sword<MH2719>, by famine<MH7458>, or by plague<MH1698>; and they will have<MH1961> no<MH3808> refugees<MH8300> or survivors<MH6412a> from the disaster<MH7463a> that I am going to bring<MH935> on them.”’” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/jeremiah/42-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>For this<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068> of armies<MH6635>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478> says<MH559>: “As My anger<MH639> and wrath<MH2534> have gushed<MH5413> out<MH5413> on the inhabitants<MH3427> of Jerusalem<MH3389>, so<MH3651> My wrath<MH2534> will gush<MH5413> out<MH5413> on you when you enter<MH935> Egypt<MH4714>.
