After a short spell in general dental practice, he took a position as a Senior House Officer and Research Assistant at Cardiff Dental Hospital and subsequently awarded funding from the Welsh Office to undertake a PhD investigating the microbial degradation of periodontal proteoglycans which was awarded in 1994. In 1993 he was appointed lecturer in the Department of Adult Dental Care, University of Glasgow Dental Hospital during which time he gained the FDS examination from the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh.
