and the LORD<MH3068> your God<MH430> said<MH559> to you, ‘You shall shepherd<MH7462a> My people<MH5971a> Israel<MH3478>, and you shall be leader<MH5057> over<MH5921> My people<MH5971a> Israel<MH3478>.’” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/11-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>So all<MH3605> the elders<MH2205> of Israel<MH3478> came<MH935> to the king<MH4428> at Hebron<MH2275a>, and David<MH1732> made<MH3772> a covenant<MH1285> with them in Hebron<MH2275a> before<MH6440> the LORD<MH3068>; and they anointed<MH4886> David<MH1732> king<MH4428> over<MH5921> Israel<MH3478>, in accordance with the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068> through<MH3027> Samuel<MH8050>. <p class="hdg">Jerusalem Is the Capital City</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/11-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Then David<MH1732> and all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478> went<MH1980> to Jerusalem<MH3389> (that is, Jebus<MH2982>); and the Jebusites<MH2983>, the inhabitants<MH3427> of the land<MH776>, <i>were</i> there<MH8033>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/11-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>The inhabitants<MH3427> of Jebus<MH2982> said<MH559> to David<MH1732>, “You shall not enter<MH935> here<MH2008>.” Nevertheless David<MH1732> took<MH3920> the mountain<MH4686b> stronghold<MH4686b> of Zion<MH6726> (that is, the city<MH5892b> of David<MH1732>). <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/11-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Now David<MH1732> had said<MH559>, “Whoever<MH3605> is first<MH7223> to <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>kill<MH5221> a Jebusite<MH2983> shall be chief<MH7218> and commander<MH8269>.” Joab<MH3097> the son<MH1121> of Zeruiah<MH6870> went<MH5927> up<MH5927> first<MH7223>, so he became<MH1961> chief<MH7218>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/11-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Then David<MH1732> lived<MH3427> in the stronghold<MH4679>; therefore<MH5921, 3651> it was called<MH7121> the city<MH5892b> of David<MH1732>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/11-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>He <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>built<MH1129> the city<MH5892b> all<MH5439> around<MH5439>, from the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>Millo<MH4407> to the surrounding<MH5439> area<MH5439>; and Joab<MH3097> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>repaired<MH2421a> the rest<MH7605> of the city<MH5892b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/11-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>And David<MH1732> became<MH1980> greater<MH1419, 1980> and greater<MH1419, 1980>, for the LORD<MH3068> of armies<MH6635> <i>was</i> with him. <p class="hdg">David’s Mighty Men</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/11-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>Now these<MH428> are the heads<MH7218> of the mighty<MH1368> men<MH1368> whom<MH834> David<MH1732> had, who remained<MH2388> faithful<MH2388> to him in his kingdom<MH4438>, together<MH5973> with<MH5973> all<MH3605> Israel<MH3478>, to make<MH4427a> him king<MH4427a>, in accordance with the word<MH1697> of the LORD<MH3068> concerning<MH5921> Israel<MH3478>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/11-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>These<MH428> <i>constitute</i> the list<MH4557> of David’s<MH1732> mighty<MH1368> men<MH1368>: Jashobeam<MH3434>, the son<MH1121> of a Hachmonite<MH2453>, the chief<MH7218> of the thirty<MH7970>; he wielded<MH5782> his spear<MH2595> against<MH5921> three<MH7969> hundred<MH3967> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>whom he killed<MH2491a> at one<MH259> time<MH6471>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/11-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>After<MH310> him was Eleazar<MH499> the son<MH1121> of Dodo<MH1734>, the Ahohite<MH266>, who<MH1931> <i>was</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>one of the three<MH7969> mighty<MH1368> men<MH1368>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/11-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>He was with David<MH1732> at <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>Pas-dammim<MH6450> when the Philistines<MH6430> were gathered<MH622> together there<MH8033> to battle<MH4421>, and there was a plot<MH2513a> of land<MH7704> full<MH4392> of barley<MH8184>; and the people<MH5971a> fled<MH5127> from<MH4480> the Philistines<MH6430>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/11-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>But they took<MH3320> their stand<MH3320> in the midst<MH8432> of the plot<MH2513a> and defended<MH5337> it, and defeated<MH5221> the Philistines<MH6430>; and the LORD<MH3068> saved<MH3467> them with a great<MH1419> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>victory<MH8668>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/11-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Now three<MH7969> of the thirty<MH7970> chief<MH7218> men<MH7218> went<MH3381> down<MH3381> to the rock<MH6697> to David<MH1732>, into the cave<MH4631> of Adullam<MH5725>, while the army<MH4264> of the Philistines<MH6430> was camping<MH2583> in the Valley<MH6010> of Rephaim<MH7497>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/11-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>David<MH1732> was then<MH227> in the stronghold<MH4686b>, while the garrison<MH5333> of the Philistines<MH6430> <i>was</i> then<MH227> in Bethlehem<MH1035>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/11-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>And David<MH1732> had<MH183> a craving<MH183> and said<MH559>, “Oh<MH4310> that someone<MH4310> would give<MH8248> me water<MH4325> to<MH8248> drink<MH8248> from the well<MH953a> of Bethlehem<MH1035>, which<MH834> is by the gate<MH8179>!” <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/11-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>So the three<MH7969> broke<MH1234> through<MH1234> the camp<MH4264> of the Philistines<MH6430> and drew<MH7579> water<MH4325> from the well<MH953a> of Bethlehem<MH1035> which<MH834> <i>was</i> by the gate<MH8179>, and took<MH5375> <i>it</i> and brought<MH935> <i>it</i> to David<MH1732>; however, David<MH1732> would<MH14> not drink<MH8354> it, but poured<MH5258a> it out<MH5258a> to the LORD<MH3068>; <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/11-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>and he said<MH559>, “Far<MH2486> be it from me before<MH4480> my God<MH430> that I would do<MH6213a> this<MH2088>. Shall I drink<MH8354> the blood<MH1818> of these<MH428> men<MH376> <i>who went</i> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>at the risk of their lives<MH5315>? For they brought<MH935> it at the risk of their lives<MH5315>.” Therefore he would<MH14> not drink<MH8354> it. The three<MH7969> mighty<MH1368> men<MH1368> did<MH6213a> these<MH428> things<MH428>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/11-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>As for <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>Abshai<MH52> the brother<MH251> of Joab<MH3097>, he was chief<MH7218> of the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>thirty<MH7970>, and he wielded<MH5782> his spear<MH2595> against<MH5921> three<MH7969> hundred<MH3967> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>and killed<MH2491a> them; and he had a name<MH8034> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>as well as the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>thirty<MH7970>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/11-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Of the three<MH7969> in the second<MH8147> <i>rank</i> he was the most<MH4480> honored<MH3513>, and he became<MH1961> their commander<MH8269>; however, he did not attain<MH935> <i>the reputation</i> of the <i>first</i> three<MH7969>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/11-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>Benaiah<MH1141> the son<MH1121> of Jehoiada<MH3077>, the son<MH1121> of a warrior<MH376, 2428> of Kabzeel<MH6909>, mighty<MH7227a> in deeds<MH6467>, struck<MH5221> and<MH5221> killed<MH5221> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>two<MH8147> <i>sons of</i> Ariel<MH739> of Moab<MH4124>. He also went<MH3381> down<MH3381> and struck<MH5221> and<MH5221> killed<MH5221> a lion<MH738> inside<MH8432> a pit<MH953a> on a snowy<MH7950> day<MH3117>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/11-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>And he killed<MH5221> an Egyptian<MH4713>, a man<MH376> of <i>great</i> stature<MH4060a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>five<MH2568> cubits<MH520> tall. Now in the Egyptian’s<MH4713> hand<MH3027> <i>was</i> a spear<MH2595> like a weaver’s<MH707> beam<MH4500>, but he went<MH3381> down<MH3381> to him with a club<MH7626> and snatched<MH1497> the spear<MH2595> from the Egyptian’s<MH4713> hand<MH3027> and killed<MH2026> him with his own spear<MH2595>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/1_chronicles/11-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>Benaiah<MH1141> the son<MH1121> of Jehoiada<MH3077> did<MH6213a> these<MH428> things<MH428>, and had a name<MH8034> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>as well as the three<MH7969> mighty<MH1368>
