The Vision of a Great Tree<a href="/daniel/4-4.htm">4</a>“<a href="#fn">[d]</a>I, Nebuchadnezzar<MH5020>, was at ease<MH7954> in my house<MH1005> and happy<MH7487b> in my palace<MH1965>. <a href="/daniel/4-5.htm">5</a>I saw<MH2370> a dream<MH2493> and it startled<MH1763> me; and these appearances<MH2031> as I lay on my bed<MH4903> and the visions<MH2376> <a href="#fn">[e]</a>in my mind<MH7217> kept<MH927> alarming<MH927> me. <a href="/daniel/4-6.htm">6</a>So I gave<MH7761> orders<MH2942> to bring<MH5954> into my presence<MH6925> all<MH3606> the wise<MH2445> men<MH2445> of Babylon<MH895>, so<MH1768> that<MH1768> they might make<MH3046> known<MH3046> to me the interpretation<MH6591> of the dream<MH2493>. <a href="/daniel/4-7.htm">7</a>Then<MH116> the soothsayer<MH2749> priests<MH2749>, the sorcerers<MH826>, the <a href="#fn">[f]</a>Chaldeans<MH3779>, and the diviners<MH1505> came<MH5954> in<MH5954> and I related<MH560> the dream<MH2493> <a href="#fn">[g]</a>to them, but they could not make<MH3046> its interpretation<MH6591> known<MH3046> to me. <a href="/daniel/4-8.htm">8</a>But finally<MH5705, 318b> Daniel<MH1841> came<MH5954> in<MH5954> before<MH6925> me, whose<MH1768> name<MH8036> is Belteshazzar<MH1096> according to the name<MH8036> of my god<MH426>, and in whom<MH1768> is <a href="#fn">[h]</a>a spirit<MH7308> of the holy<MH6922> gods<MH426>; and I related<MH560> the dream<MH2493> <a href="#fn">[i]</a>to him, saying, <a href="/daniel/4-9.htm">9</a>‘Belteshazzar<MH1096>, chief<MH7229> of the soothsayer<MH2749> priests<MH2749>, since<MH1768> I know<MH3046> that a spirit<MH7308> of the holy<MH6922> gods<MH426> is in you and no<MH3606, 3809> secret<MH7328> baffles<MH598> you, tell<MH560> me the visions<MH2376> of my dream<MH2493> which<MH1768> I have seen<MH2370>, along with its interpretation<MH6591>. <a href="/daniel/4-10.htm">10</a>‘Now these were the visions<MH2376> <a href="#fn">[j]</a>in my mind<MH7217> as I lay on my bed<MH4903>: I was looking<MH2370>, and behold<MH431>, there was a tree<MH363> in the middle<MH1459> of the <a href="#fn">[k]</a>earth<MH772> and its height<MH7314> was great<MH7690>. <poetry><a href="/daniel/4-11.htm">11</a>‘The tree<MH363> grew<MH7236> large<MH7236> and became<MH8631> strong<MH8631> <t>And its height<MH7314> reached<MH4291> to the sky<MH8065>, <t>And it was visible<MH2379> to the end<MH5491> of the whole<MH3606> earth<MH772>. <poetry><a href="/daniel/4-12.htm">12</a>‘Its foliage<MH6074a> was beautiful<MH8209> and its fruit<MH4> abundant<MH7690>, <t>And in it was food<MH4203> for all<MH3606>. <t>The animals<MH2423> of the field<MH1251> <a href="#fn">[l]</a>found<MH2927> shade<MH2927> under<MH8460> it, <t>And the birds<MH6853> of the sky<MH8065> lived<MH1753> in its branches<MH6056>, <t>And all<MH3606> <a href="#fn">[m]</a>living<MH1321> creatures<MH1321> fed<MH2110> from it. <a href="/daniel/4-13.htm">13</a>‘I was looking<MH2370> in the visions<MH2376> <a href="#fn">[n]</a>in my mind<MH7217> as I lay on my bed<MH4903>, and behold<MH431>, an angelic<MH5894> watcher<MH5894>, a holy<MH6922> one<MH6922>, descended<MH5182> from heaven<MH8065>. <poetry><a href="/daniel/4-14.htm">14</a>‘He shouted<MH7123> out and spoke<MH560> as<MH3652> follows<MH3652>: “Chop<MH1414> down<MH1414> the tree<MH363> and cut<MH7113> off<MH7113> its branches<MH6056>, <t>Shake<MH5426> off<MH5426> its foliage<MH6074a> and scatter<MH921> its fruit<MH4>; <t>Let the animals<MH2423> flee<MH5111> from under<MH8460> it <t>And the birds<MH6853> from its branches<MH6056>. <poetry><a href="/daniel/4-15.htm">15</a>“Yet<MH1297> leave<MH7662> the stump<MH6136a> <a href="#fn">[o]</a>with its roots<MH8330> in the ground<MH772>, <t>But with a band<MH613> of iron<MH6523> and bronze<MH5174> around it <t>In the new<MH1883> grass<MH1883> of the field<MH1251>; <t>And let him be drenched<MH6647> with the dew<MH2920> of heaven<MH8065>, <t>And let <a href="#fn">[p]</a>him share<MH2508> with the animals<MH2423> in the grass<MH6212b> of the earth<MH772>. <poetry><a href="/daniel/4-16.htm">16</a>“Let his <a href="#fn">[q]</a>mind<MH3825> change<MH8133> from that of a human<MH606> <t>And let an animal’s<MH2423> <a href="#fn">[r]</a>mind<MH3825> be given<MH3052> to him, <t>And let seven<MH7655> <a href="#fn">[s]</a>periods of time<MH5732> pass<MH2499> over<MH5922> him. <poetry><a href="/daniel/4-17.htm">17</a>“This sentence<MH6600> is by the decree<MH1510> of the angelic<MH5894> watchers<MH5894>, <t>And the decision<MH7595> is a command<MH3983> of the holy<MH6922> ones<MH6922>, <t>In order<MH5705, 1701> that the living<MH2417> may know<MH3046> <t>That the Most<MH5943> High<MH5943> is ruler<MH7990> over the realm<MH4437> of mankind<MH606>, <t>And He grants<MH5415> it to whomever<MH1768, 4479> He wishes<MH6634> <t>And sets<MH6966> over<MH5922> it the lowliest<MH8215> of people<MH606>.” <A><a href="/daniel/4-18.htm">18</a>This<MH1836> is the dream<MH2493> that I, King<MH4430> Nebuchadnezzar<MH5020>, have seen<MH2370>. Now you, Belteshazzar<MH1096>, tell<MH560> me its interpretation<MH6591>, since<MH6903, 1768> none<MH3606, 3809> of the wise<MH2445> men<MH2445> of my kingdom<MH4437> is able<MH3202> to make<MH3046> known<MH3046> to me the interpretation<MH6591>; but you are able<MH3546>, because<MH1768> a spirit<MH7308> of the holy<MH6922> gods<MH426> is in you.’ Daniel Interprets the Vision<a href="/daniel/4-19.htm">19</a>“Then<MH116> Daniel<MH1841>, whose<MH1768> name<MH8036> is Belteshazzar<MH1096>, was appalled<MH8075> for a while<MH8160> as his thoughts<MH7476> alarmed<MH927> him. The king<MH4430> responded<MH6032> and said<MH560>, ‘Belteshazzar<MH1096>, do not let the dream<MH2493> or its interpretation<MH6591> alarm<MH927> you.’ Belteshazzar<MH1096> replied<MH6032>, ‘My lord<MH4756>, if only the dream<MH2493> applied to those who hate<MH8131> you, and its interpretation<MH6591> to your adversaries<MH6146>! <a href="/daniel/4-20.htm">20</a>The tree<MH363> that you saw<MH2370>, which<MH1768> became<MH7236> large<MH7236> and grew<MH8631> strong<MH8631>, whose height<MH7314> reached<MH4291> to the sky<MH8065> and was visible<MH2379> to all<MH3606> the earth<MH772>, <a href="/daniel/4-21.htm">21</a>and whose foliage<MH6074a> was beautiful<MH8209> and its fruit<MH4> abundant<MH7690>, and in which was food<MH4203> for all<MH3606>, under<MH8460> which the animals<MH2423> of the field<MH1251> lived<MH1753> and in whose branches<MH6056> the birds<MH6853> of the sky<MH8065> settled<MH7932>— <a href="/daniel/4-22.htm">22</a>it is you, O king<MH4430>; for you have become<MH7236> great<MH7236> and grown<MH8631> strong<MH8631>, and your <a href="#fn">[t]</a>majesty<MH7238> has become<MH7236> great<MH7236> and reached<MH4291> to the sky<MH8065>, and your dominion<MH7985> to the end<MH5491> of the earth<MH772>. <a href="/daniel/4-23.htm">23</a>And in that the king<MH4430> saw<MH2370> an angelic<MH5894> watcher<MH5894>, a holy<MH6922> one<MH6922>, descending<MH5182> from heaven<MH8065> and saying<MH560>, “Chop<MH1414> down<MH1414> the tree<MH363> and destroy<MH2255> it; yet<MH1297> leave<MH7662> the stump<MH6136a> <a href="#fn">[u]</a>with its roots<MH8330> in the ground<MH772>, but with a band<MH613> of iron<MH6523> and bronze<MH5174> around it in the new<MH1883> grass<MH1883> of the field<MH1251>, let him be drenched<MH6647> with the dew<MH2920> of heaven<MH8065>, and let <a href="#fn">[v]</a>him share<MH2508> with the animals<MH2423> of the field<MH1251> until<MH5705, 1768> seven<MH7655> <a href="#fn">[w]</a>periods of time<MH5732> pass<MH2499> over<MH5922> him,” <a href="/daniel/4-24.htm">24</a>this<MH1836> is the interpretation<MH6591>, O king<MH4430>, and this<MH1932> is the decree<MH1510> of the Most<MH5943> High<MH5943>, which<MH1768> has come<MH4291> upon my lord<MH4756> the king<MH4430>: <a href="/daniel/4-25.htm">25</a>that you be driven<MH2957> away<MH2957> from mankind<MH606> and your dwelling<MH4070> place<MH4070> be with the animals<MH2423> of the field<MH1251>, and you be given<MH2939> grass<MH6212b> to<MH2939> eat<MH2939> like cattle<MH8450> and be drenched<MH6647> with the dew<MH2920> of heaven<MH8065>; and seven<MH7655> <a href="#fn">[x]</a>periods of time<MH5732> will pass<MH2499> over<MH5922> you, until<MH5705, 1768> you recognize<MH3046> that the Most<MH5943> High<MH5943> is ruler<MH7990> over the realm<MH4437> of mankind<MH606> and bestows<MH5415> it on whomever<MH4479, 1768> He wishes<MH6634>. <a href="/daniel/4-26.htm">26</a>And in that it was commanded<MH560> to leave<MH7662> the stump<MH6136a> <a href="#fn">[y]</a>with the roots<MH8330> of the tree<MH363>, your kingdom<MH4437> will <a href="#fn">[z]</a>remain<MH7011> as yours after<MH4481, 1768> you recognize<MH3046> that it is Heaven<MH8065> that rules<MH7990>. <a href="/daniel/4-27.htm">27</a>Therefore<MH3861a>, O king<MH4430>, may my advice<MH4431> be pleasing<MH8232> to you: wipe<MH6562> away<MH6562> your sin<MH2408> by doing righteousness<MH6665>, and your wrongdoings<MH5758> by showing<MH2604> mercy<MH2604> to the poor<MH6040b>, in<MH2006> case<MH2006> there may be a prolonging<MH754> of your prosperity<MH7963>.’ The Vision Fulfilled<a href="/daniel/4-28.htm">28</a>“All<MH3606> of this happened<MH4291> to Nebuchadnezzar<MH5020> the king<MH4430>. <a href="/daniel/4-29.htm">29</a>Twelve<MH8648, 6236> months<MH3393> later<MH7118> he was walking<MH1981> on the roof of the royal<MH4437> palace<MH1965> of Babylon<MH895>. <a href="/daniel/4-30.htm">30</a>The king<MH4430> began<MH6032> speaking<MH6032> and was saying<MH560>, ‘Is this<MH1668> not Babylon<MH895> the great<MH7229>, which<MH1768> I myself<MH576> have built<MH1124> as a royal<MH4437> <a href="#fn">[aa]</a>residence<MH1005> by the might<MH8632a> of my power<MH2632> and for the honor<MH3367> of my majesty<MH1923>?’ <a href="/daniel/4-31.htm">31</a>While the word<MH4406> was still<MH5751> in the king’s<MH4430> mouth<MH6433>, a voice<MH7032a> <a href="#fn">[ab]</a>came<MH5308> from heaven<MH8065>, saying, ‘King<MH4430> Nebuchadnezzar<MH5020>, to you it is declared<MH560>: <a href="#fn">[ac]</a>sovereignty<MH4437> has been<MH5709> removed<MH5709> from you, <a href="/daniel/4-32.htm">32</a>and you will be driven<MH2957> away<MH2957> from mankind<MH606>, and your dwelling<MH4070> place<MH4070> will be with the animals<MH2423> of the field<MH1251>. You will be given<MH2939> grass<MH6212b> to<MH2939> eat<MH2939> like cattle<MH8450>, and seven<MH7655> <a href="#fn">[ad]</a>periods of time<MH5732> will pass<MH2499> over<MH5922> you until<MH5705, 1768> you recognize<MH3046> that the Most<MH5943> High<MH5943> is ruler<MH7990> over the realm<MH4437> of mankind<MH606> and bestows<MH5415> it on whomever<MH4479, 1768> He wishes<MH6634>.’ <a href="/daniel/4-33.htm">33</a>Immediately<MH8160> the word<MH4406> concerning<MH5922> Nebuchadnezzar<MH5020> was fulfilled<MH5487>; and he was driven<MH2957> away<MH2957> from mankind<MH606> and began eating<MH399> grass<MH6212b> like cattle<MH8450>, and his body<MH1655> was drenched<MH6647> with the dew<MH2920> of heaven<MH8065> until<MH5705, 1768> his hair<MH8177> had grown<MH7236> like eagles’<MH5403> feathers and his nails<MH2953> like birds’<MH6853> claws. <a href="/daniel/4-34.htm">34</a>“But at the end<MH7118> of <a href="#fn">[ae]</a>that period<MH3118>, I, Nebuchadnezzar<MH5020>, raised<MH5191> my eyes<MH5870a> toward heaven<MH8065> and my <a href="#fn">[af]</a>reason<MH4486> returned<MH8421> to me, and I blessed<MH1289> the Most<MH5943> High<MH5943> and praised<MH7624> and honored<MH1922> Him who<MH2417> lives<MH2417> forever<MH5957>; <t>For His dominion<MH7985> is an everlasting<MH5957> dominion<MH7985>, <t>And His kingdom<MH4437> endures from generation<MH1859> to generation<MH1859>. <poetry><a href="/daniel/4-35.htm">35</a>“All<MH3606> the inhabitants<MH1753> of the earth<MH772> are of no<MH3809> account<MH2804>, <t>But He does<MH5648> according<MH4481> to His will<MH6634> among the army<MH2429> of heaven<MH8065> <t>And among the inhabitants<MH1753> of earth<MH772>; <t>And no<MH3809> one can <a href="#fn">[ag]</a>fend<MH4223> off<MH4223> His hand<MH3028> <t>Or say<MH560> to Him, ‘What<MH4101> have You done<MH5648>?’ <A><a href="/daniel/4-36.htm">36</a>At that time<MH2166> my <a href="#fn">[ah]</a>reason<MH4486> returned<MH8421> to me.
