Yet behold<MH2009>, we are forcing<MH3533> our sons<MH1121> and our daughters<MH1323> to be slaves<MH5650>, and some<MH4480> of our daughters<MH1323> are forced<MH3533> into<MH3533> bondage<MH3533> <i>already,</i> and <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[a]</a></span>we are helpless<MH369, 410, 3027> because our fields<MH7704> and vineyards<MH3754> belong to others<MH312>.” <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/5-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>Then I was<MH2734> very<MH3966> angry<MH2734> when<MH3512c> I heard<MH8085> their outcry<MH2201> and these<MH428> words<MH1697>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/5-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>So I thought<MH4427b, 3820> it over<MH4427b> and contended<MH7378> with the nobles<MH2715> and the leading<MH5461> people<MH5461>, and said<MH559> to them, “You are lending<MH5377> at interest<MH4855>, each<MH376> to his brother<MH251>!” Therefore, I held<MH5414> a great<MH1419> assembly<MH6952> against<MH5921> them. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/5-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>And I said<MH559> to them, “We, according to our ability<MH1767>, have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>redeemed<MH7069> our Jewish<MH3064> brothers<MH251> who were sold<MH4376> to the nations<MH1471>; now would you even<MH1571> sell<MH4376> your brothers<MH251> that they may be sold<MH4376> to us?” Then they were<MH2790b> silent<MH2790b> and could not find<MH4672> a word<MH1697> <i>to say.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/5-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>So I said<MH559>, “The thing<MH1697> which<MH834> you are doing<MH6213a> is not good<MH2896a>; should you not walk<MH1980> in the fear<MH3374> of our God<MH430> because<MH4480> of the taunting<MH2781> of the nations<MH1471>, our enemies<MH340>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/5-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>And likewise<MH1571> I, my brothers<MH251>, and my servants<MH5288> are lending<MH5383> them money<MH3701> and grain<MH1715>. Please<MH4994>, let’s <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>do<MH5800a> without<MH5800a> this<MH2088> interest<MH4855>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/5-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Please<MH4994>, give<MH7725> back<MH7725> to them this very day<MH3117> their fields<MH7704>, their vineyards<MH3754>, their olive<MH2132> groves<MH2132>, and their houses<MH1004>, as well as the hundredth<MH3967> <i>part</i> of the money<MH3701> and of the grain<MH1715>, the new<MH8492> wine<MH8492>, and the oil<MH3323> that you are charging<MH5383> as<MH5383> interest<MH5383> from them.” <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/5-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Then they said<MH559>, “We will give<MH7725> <i>it</i> back<MH7725> and will require<MH1245> nothing<MH3808> from them; we will do<MH6213a> exactly<MH3651> as you say<MH559>.” So I called<MH7121> the priests<MH3548> and made them take<MH7650> an<MH7650> oath<MH7650> to act<MH6213a> in accordance with this<MH2088> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>promise<MH1697>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/5-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>I also<MH1571> shook<MH5287> out<MH5287> the <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>front<MH2684> of<MH2684> my garment<MH2684> and said<MH559>, “So<MH3602> may God<MH430> shake<MH5287> out<MH5287> every<MH3605> person<MH376> from his house<MH1004> and from his possessions<MH3018> who<MH834> does not keep<MH6965> this<MH2088> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>promise<MH1697>; just so<MH3602> may he be shaken<MH5287> out<MH5287> and emptied<MH7386>.” And all<MH3605> the assembly<MH6951> said<MH559>, “Amen<MH543>!” And they praised<MH1984b> the LORD<MH3068>. Then the people<MH5971a> acted<MH6213a> in accordance with this<MH2088> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>promise<MH1697>. <p class="hdg">Nehemiah’s Example</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/5-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>Furthermore<MH1571>, since<MH4480> the day<MH3117> that I was appointed<MH6680> to be their governor<MH6346> in the land<MH776> of Judah<MH3063>, from the twentieth<MH6242> year<MH8141> to the thirty-second<MH7970, 8147> year<MH8141> of King<MH4428> Artaxerxes<MH783a>, for twelve<MH8147, 6240> years<MH8141>, neither<MH3808> I nor<MH3808> my kinsmen<MH251> have eaten<MH398> the governor’s<MH6346> food<MH3899> <i>allowance.</i> <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/5-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>But the previous<MH7223> governors<MH6346> who<MH834> were before<MH6440> me <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>laid<MH3513> burdens<MH3513> on the people<MH5971a> and took<MH3947> from them bread<MH3899> and wine<MH3196> besides<MH310> forty<MH705> shekels<MH8255> of silver<MH3701>; even<MH1571> their servants<MH5288> domineered<MH7980> the people<MH5971a>. But I did not do<MH6213a> so<MH3651> because<MH4480, 6440> of <i>my</i> fear<MH3374> of God<MH430>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/5-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>I also<MH1571> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>applied<MH2388> myself to the work<MH4399> on this<MH2088> wall<MH2346>; we did not buy<MH7069> any land<MH7704>, and all<MH3605> my servants<MH5288> were gathered<MH6908> there<MH8033> for the work<MH4399>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/5-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Moreover, <i>there were</i> at my table<MH7979> 150<MH3967, 2572> Jews<MH3064> and officials<MH5461>, besides those who came<MH935> to us from the nations<MH1471> that were around<MH5439> us. <span class="reftext"><a href="/nehemiah/5-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>Now that which<MH834> was prepared<MH6213a> for each day<MH3117> was one<MH259> ox<MH7794> <i>and</i> six<MH8337a> choice<MH1305> sheep<MH6629>; also birds<MH6833> were prepared<MH6213a> for me, and every<MH996> ten<MH6235> days<MH3117> all<MH3605> <i>sorts of</i> wine<MH3196> <i>were provided</i> in abundance<MH7235a>.
