for this<MH2088> Moses<MH4872>, the man<MH376> who<MH834> brought<MH5927> us up<MH5927> from the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>&#8212;we do not know<MH3045> what<MH4100> happened<MH1961> to him.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-2.htm"><b>2</b></a></span>Aaron<MH175> said<MH559> to them, &#8220;Tear<MH6561> off<MH6561> the gold<MH2091> rings<MH5141> which<MH834> are in the ears<MH241> of your wives<MH802>, your sons<MH1121>, and your daughters<MH1323>, and bring<MH935> <i>them</i> to me.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-3.htm"><b>3</b></a></span>So all<MH3605> the people<MH5971a> tore<MH6561> off<MH6561> the gold<MH2091> rings<MH5141> which<MH834> were in their ears<MH241> and brought<MH935> <i>them</i> to Aaron<MH175>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-4.htm"><b>4</b></a></span>Then he took<MH3947> <i>the gold</i> from their <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[b]</a></span>hands<MH3027>, and fashioned<MH6696c> it with an engraving<MH2747> tool<MH2747> and made<MH6213a> it into a cast<MH4541a> metal<MH4541a> calf<MH5695>; and they said<MH559>, &#8220;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[c]</a></span>This<MH428> is your god<MH430>, Israel<MH3478>, who<MH834> brought<MH5927> you up<MH5927> from the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-5.htm"><b>5</b></a></span>Now when Aaron<MH175> saw<MH7200> <i>this,</i> he built<MH1129> an altar<MH4196> in front<MH6440> of it; and Aaron<MH175> made<MH7121> a<MH7121> proclamation<MH7121> and said<MH559>, &#8220;Tomorrow<MH4279> <i>shall be</i> a feast<MH2282> to the LORD<MH3068>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-6.htm"><b>6</b></a></span>So the next<MH4283> day<MH4283> they got<MH7925> up<MH7925> early<MH7925> and offered<MH5927> burnt<MH5930a> offerings<MH5930a>, and brought<MH5066> peace<MH8002> offerings<MH8002>; and the people<MH5971a> sat<MH3427> down<MH3427> to eat<MH398> and to drink<MH8354>, and got<MH6965> up<MH6965> to engage<MH6711> in<MH6711> lewd<MH6711> behavior<MH6711>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-7.htm"><b>7</b></a></span>Then the LORD<MH3068> spoke<MH1696> to Moses<MH4872>, &#8220;Go<MH1980> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[d]</a></span>down<MH3381> at once<MH3381>, for your people<MH5971a>, whom<MH834> you brought<MH5927> up<MH5927> from the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>, have behaved<MH7843> corruptly<MH7843>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-8.htm"><b>8</b></a></span>They have quickly<MH4118b> turned<MH5493> aside<MH5493> from the way<MH1870> which<MH834> I commanded<MH6680> them. They have made<MH6213a> for themselves a cast<MH4541a> metal<MH4541a> calf<MH5695>, and have worshiped<MH2331c> it and have sacrificed<MH2076> to it and said<MH559>, &#8216;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[e]</a></span>This<MH428> is your god<MH430>, Israel<MH3478>, who<MH834> brought<MH5927> you up<MH5927> from the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>!&#8217;&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-9.htm"><b>9</b></a></span>Then the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to Moses<MH4872>, &#8220;I have seen<MH7200> this<MH2088> people<MH5971a>, and behold<MH2009>, they are <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[f]</a></span>an obstinate<MH7186, 6203> people<MH5971a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-10.htm"><b>10</b></a></span>So now<MH6258> leave<MH5117> Me alone<MH5117>, that My anger<MH639> may burn<MH2734> against them and that I may destroy<MH3615> them; and I will make<MH6213a> of you a great<MH1419> nation<MH1471>.&#8221; <p class="hdg">Moses&#8217; Plea</p><p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-11.htm"><b>11</b></a></span>Then Moses<MH4872> pleaded<MH2470b> with the LORD<MH3068> his God<MH430>, and said<MH559>, &#8220;LORD<MH3068>, why<MH4100> does Your anger<MH639> burn<MH2734> against Your people<MH5971a> whom<MH834> You have brought<MH3318> out<MH3318> from the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714> with great<MH1419> power<MH3581b> and with a mighty<MH2389> hand<MH3027>? <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-12.htm"><b>12</b></a></span>Why<MH4100> should the Egyptians<MH4714> talk<MH559>, saying<MH559>, &#8216;With evil<MH7463a> <i>motives</i> He brought<MH3318> them out<MH3318>, to kill<MH2026> them on the mountains<MH2022> and to destroy<MH3615> them from the face<MH6440> of the earth<MH127>&#8217;? Turn<MH7725> from Your burning<MH2740> anger<MH639> and relent<MH5162> of <i>doing</i> harm<MH7463a> to Your people<MH5971a>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-13.htm"><b>13</b></a></span>Remember<MH2142> Abraham<MH85>, Isaac<MH3327>, and Israel<MH3478>, Your servants<MH5650> to whom<MH834> You swore<MH7650> by Yourself, and said<MH1696> to them, &#8216;I will multiply<MH7235a> your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[g]</a></span>descendants<MH2233> as the stars<MH3556> of the heavens<MH8064>, and all<MH3605> this<MH2088> land<MH776> of which<MH834> I have spoken<MH559> I will give<MH5414> to your <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[h]</a></span>descendants<MH2233>, and they shall inherit<MH5157> <i>it</i> forever<MH5769>.&#8217;&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-14.htm"><b>14</b></a></span>So the LORD<MH3068> relented<MH5162> of the harm<MH7463a> which<MH834> He said<MH1696> He would do<MH6213a> to His people<MH5971a>. <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-15.htm"><b>15</b></a></span>Then Moses<MH4872> turned<MH6437> and went<MH3381> down<MH3381> from the mountain<MH2022> with the two<MH8147> tablets<MH3871> of the testimony<MH5715> in his hand<MH3027>, tablets<MH3871> which were written<MH3789> on both<MH8147> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[i]</a></span>sides<MH5676>; they were written<MH3789> on one<MH2088> <i>side</i> and the other<MH2088>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-16.htm"><b>16</b></a></span>The tablets<MH3871> were God&#8217;s<MH430> work<MH4639>, and the writing<MH4385> was God&#8217;s<MH430> writing<MH4385> engraved<MH2801> on the tablets<MH3871>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-17.htm"><b>17</b></a></span>Now when Joshua<MH3091> heard<MH8085> the sound<MH6963> of the people<MH5971a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[j]</a></span>as they shouted<MH7452>, he said<MH559> to Moses<MH4872>, &#8220;<i>There is</i> a sound<MH6963> of war<MH4421> in the camp<MH4264>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-18.htm"><b>18</b></a></span>But he said<MH559>, <p class="indent1stline">&#8220;It is not the sound<MH6963> of the cry<MH6031b> of victory<MH1369>, <t><p class="indent1">Nor<MH369> is it the sound<MH6963> of the cry<MH6031b> of defeat<MH2476>; <t><p class="indent1">But I hear<MH8085> the sound<MH6963> of singing<MH6031b>.&#8221; <p class="hdg">Moses&#8217; Anger</p><A><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-19.htm"><b>19</b></a></span>And it came<MH1961> about<MH1961>, as<MH3512c> soon<MH3512c> as<MH3512c> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[k]</a></span>Moses approached<MH7126> the camp<MH4264>, that he saw<MH7200> the calf<MH5695> and <i>the people</i> dancing<MH4246>; and Moses&#8217;<MH4872> anger<MH639> burned<MH2734>, and he threw<MH7993> the tablets<MH3871> from his hands<MH3027> and shattered<MH7665> them to<MH7665> pieces<MH7665> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[l]</a></span>at<MH8478> the<MH8478> foot<MH8478> of<MH8478> the mountain<MH2022>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-20.htm"><b>20</b></a></span>Then he took<MH3947> the calf<MH5695> which<MH834> they had made<MH6213a> and completely<MH8313> burned<MH8313> <i>it</i> with fire<MH784>, and ground<MH2912> it to powder<MH834, 1854>, and scattered<MH2219> it over<MH5921> the surface<MH6440> of the water<MH4325> and made<MH8248> the sons<MH1121> of Israel<MH3478> drink<MH8248> <i>it.</i> <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-21.htm"><b>21</b></a></span>Then Moses<MH4872> said<MH559> to Aaron<MH175>, &#8220;What<MH4100> did this<MH2088> people<MH5971a> do<MH6213a> to you, that you have brought<MH935> <i>such</i> a great<MH1419> sin<MH2401> upon them?&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-22.htm"><b>22</b></a></span>And Aaron<MH175> said<MH559>, &#8220;Do not let the anger<MH639> of my lord<MH113> burn<MH2734>; you know<MH3045> the people<MH5971a> yourself<MH859>, that they are <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[m]</a></span>prone to evil<MH7451b>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-23.htm"><b>23</b></a></span>For they said<MH559> to me, &#8216;Make<MH6213a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[n]</a></span>a god<MH430> for us who<MH834> will go<MH1980> before<MH6440> us; for this<MH2088> Moses<MH4872>, the man<MH376> who<MH834> brought<MH5927> us up<MH5927> from the land<MH776> of Egypt<MH4714>&#8212;we do not know<MH3045> what<MH4100> happened<MH1961> to him.&#8217; <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-24.htm"><b>24</b></a></span>So I said<MH559> to them, &#8216;Whoever<MH4310> has any gold<MH2091>, let them tear<MH6561> it off<MH6561>.&#8217; Then they gave<MH5414> <i>it</i> to me, and I threw<MH7993> it into the fire<MH784>, and out<MH3318> came<MH3318> this<MH2088> calf<MH5695>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-25.htm"><b>25</b></a></span>Now when Moses<MH4872> saw<MH7200> that the people<MH5971a> were<MH6544a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[o]</a></span>out<MH6544a> of<MH6544a> control<MH6544a>&#8212;for Aaron<MH175> had let them <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[p]</a></span>get<MH6544a> out<MH6544a> of<MH6544a> control<MH6544a> to <i>the point of being</i> an object<MH8103> of<MH8103> ridicule<MH8103> among <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[q]</a></span>their enemies<MH6965>&#8212; <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-26.htm"><b>26</b></a></span>Moses<MH4872> then stood<MH5975> at the gate<MH8179> of the camp<MH4264>, and said<MH559>, &#8220;Whoever<MH4310> is for the LORD<MH3068>, <i>come</i> to me!&#8221; And all<MH3605> the sons<MH1121> of Levi<MH3878> gathered<MH622> together to him. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-27.htm"><b>27</b></a></span>And he said<MH559> to them, &#8220;This<MH3541> is<MH3541> what<MH3541> the LORD<MH3068>, the God<MH430> of Israel<MH3478> says<MH1696>: &#8216;Every<MH376> man<MH376> <i>of you</i> put<MH7760> his sword<MH2719> on his thigh<MH3409>, and go<MH5674a, 7725> back<MH7725> and forth<MH5674a> from gate<MH8179> to gate<MH8179> in the camp<MH4264>, and kill<MH2026> every<MH376> man<MH376> his brother<MH251>, and every<MH376> man<MH376> his friend<MH7453>, and every<MH376> man<MH376> his <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[r]</a></span>neighbor<MH7453>.&#8217;&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-28.htm"><b>28</b></a></span>So the sons<MH1121> of Levi<MH3878> did<MH6213a> <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[s]</a></span>as Moses<MH4872> instructed<MH1697>, and about three<MH7969> thousand<MH505> men<MH376> of the people<MH5971a> fell<MH5307> that day<MH3117>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-29.htm"><b>29</b></a></span>Then Moses<MH4872> said<MH559>, &#8220;<span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[t]</a></span>Dedicate<MH4390> yourselves<MH3027> today<MH3117> to the LORD<MH3068>&#8212;for every<MH376> man<MH376> has been against his son<MH1121> and against his brother<MH251>&#8212;in order that He may bestow<MH5414> a blessing<MH1293> upon you today<MH3117>.&#8221; <p class="paragraph"><span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-30.htm"><b>30</b></a></span>And on the next<MH4283> day<MH4283> Moses<MH4872> said<MH559> to the people<MH5971a>, &#8220;You yourselves<MH864b> have <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[u]</a></span>committed<MH2398> a great<MH1419> sin<MH2401>; and now<MH6258> I am going<MH5927> up<MH5927> to the LORD<MH3068>; perhaps<MH194> I can make<MH3722a> atonement<MH3722a> for your sin<MH2403b>.&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-31.htm"><b>31</b></a></span>Then Moses<MH4872> returned<MH7725> to the LORD<MH3068> and said<MH559>, &#8220;Oh<MH577>, this<MH2088> people<MH5971a> has <span class="fn"><a href="#fn">[v]</a></span>committed<MH2398> a great<MH1419> sin<MH2401>, and they have made<MH6213a> a god<MH430> of gold<MH2091> for themselves! <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-32.htm"><b>32</b></a></span>But now<MH6258>, if<MH518> You will forgive<MH5375> their sin<MH2403b>, <i>very well;</i> but if<MH518> not, please<MH4994> wipe<MH4229a> me out<MH4229a> from Your book<MH5612> which<MH834> You have written<MH3789>!&#8221; <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-33.htm"><b>33</b></a></span>However, the LORD<MH3068> said<MH559> to Moses<MH4872>, &#8220;Whoever<MH4310, 834> has sinned<MH2398> against Me, I will wipe<MH4229a> him out<MH4229a> of My book<MH5612>. <span class="reftext"><a href="/exodus/32-34.htm"><b>34</b></a></span>But go<MH1980> now<MH6258>, lead<MH5148> the people<MH5971a> where<MH413, 834> I told<MH1696> you.
